Another good update Dave, good to see the updates Nortent have made, but it always surprises me, maybe it shouldn't because people are more less likely to read instructions correctly or use common sense or take personal responsibility! I shouldn't be surprised!
I have watched many channels where experts or very experienced campers do completely the opposite of many brands instructions, including Hillerberg for example and Nortent.
Still I cant understand some of the hate even in the comments below, some just seem to lack some common sense and just want to black list a product.
The new Vern's did come out with allot of hype, so maybe that's why! But each situation I watched, not all of them, a couple of other well known channels, made errors and while you may get away with that on some other brands at 50 plus its risky for man reasons! Its also about pushing a new product and finding the weaknesses. Otherwise why do we watch. I appreciate that and learn as much from mistakes than everything done right. Again why we watch.
Nortent always unlike others suggested double poling in extreme conditions and that's what we are talking about here! Tensioning the side straps, which I like as an option, on other sites you have to go look for that info and often not easy to find.
Also say compared to a sleeve tent its different to setup and take down, leaving a door opening to flap around in high winds while erecting or collapsing which I watched in one video, shows a lack of care and imo skill in those conditions, extreme conditions is about skills, all skills, especially if on your own! I doubt many in the comments actually go into extreme conditions!
And are just looking for a way to jump on a bandwagon. Nortent seem to have taken feedback and sometimes improvements are not so much because of product issues but because of consumer stupidity protection measures, I do like they went to bigger poles though.
For me the old saying is never truer now than it was when I first heard it, you can lead a horse to water but you cant make them drink!
Stupidity is what stupidity does, some of the nit picking I'm reading really is that! Sad to see that in the camping world, it really is everywhere, that said I only appreciate good companies that are responsive and here for the right reasons.
I for one am still a fan. If those tests ya did don't get through to people nothing can help them, cant please everyone all the time!

Agreed. When the Cloud Peak 2 was getting pelters online for not being strong enough in high winds it was interesting to see how many critics hadn't set up the tent correctly in the first place (poles not interwoven at the top, guylines wrapped around poles so many times they were anchoring about a foot lower than needed, etc).
You know that a company cares when they take negative feedback and use that information to improve the design. I currently have the Terra Nova Compact Pioneer 2 but this may be my next tent. I like the extra space this offers.

Tip I would suggest is that if you are using trekking poles. Put them tip into the ground and handle up, this way if it does come loose for any reason in bad weather it doesn't hit the tent and potentially rip it ;) Atb.

Dave, I have had the tent since early February and have a receipt to prove that, which is my main point. The loyal following purchased the tents first, and their loyalty should be recognised. I would understand if they had sent it free for evaluation and promotion, but that is only a handful. The very least they could do is offer the new poles at cost based on proof of purchase, yes it will cost them some money, but at the end of the day they advertised it as a 4 season tent and it falls short of that, which is why after 4 months they have upgraded the poles. I don’t know what business you work in but if you want to be a premium brand customer loyalty and support comes first for retention.
I am just another tent guy Ian and get some info, from Nortent, but I have heard lots of great customer service recent stories. You should speak to them first.

I purchased the Vern 1 in March, just five short months ago, and believe all those customers that were early buyers should have their original poles replaced by Nortent. If Nortent deem the original poles substandard and in need of amendment, then I think they're not actually fit for purpose.
I invested in a second pair of poles upon their advice in April.
I'm going to keep the tent and use as advised but I won't be buying from the company again as I feel slightly mugged off.
Others can argue the toss with my stance but Nortent's customer service is lacking and very shortsighted in this instance.
What a great follow-up, and well done to Nortent for making improvements...they must watch YT.
They have always said, a static tent, in terms of development, is a 'dead' tent.

Nice one. I'm interested whether, when decreasing the overall length of the tent in order to make the ends steeper, you also need to expand its overall width in order to keep the four angled "corner" panels taut.
And I see you used the double poling to interweave (over/under at cross points) the poles which also gives much greater rigidity.
Good question, you can only shorten them so much, and pull out the sides, especially at the door pegging points to stop getting excess loose material. But it's enough to make it very strong. Cheers and thanks for commenting. Dave

Yes Matt. Definitely thicker wall thickness.
I have the Vern 3 ( love it by the way) and purchased the tent as advertised with "9mm poles". An eagle-eyed Facebook friend noticed that the Blue poles on our early adopter Vern 3 seemed smaller than the advertised 9mm. After measuring and an inquiry to Nortent they admitted that the Blue (Vern 3) poles were indeed only 8.5mm, not the 9mm as advertised. They have since changed the website information.
Now I'm wondering like others here if we early adopters who purchased the tent will receive or at least be offered a deal on the upgraded (better) poles. Not that I'm going to camp in a hurricane, but we'd appreciate a little consideration.
The impression I have is that the early poles are fine, but they have changed them to increase the operating window of the tent.

Great video Dave. Capable up to 50mph ? Well you wouldn't want to be out and exposed to winds of anything stronger in reality as you would be potentially putting yourself in a compromising position, bordering on stupidity and putting fell rescuer's at risk when they have to come and save you. With those double poles, that Vern 2 tent is awesome, great demonstration of the tents capability and robustness. Hats off and respect to Nortent for making the upgrades to the poles, just shows what a responsible manufacture they are.
There's always going to be someone who gets genuinely caught off guard with a change in conditions, and a forecast is just that. 50 to 75mph in a tent isn't much fun as I've recently been told.
Dave what's the complete weight of the Vern 2 with double the amount of new poles?
That will be the original weight, plus 300, plus the weight of the poles as I said in the video, what was that 1300g?
Fellman must be the only camper on You-Tube brave enough to brutally scale the walls of the tent and put the thing to the Grizzly Bear test....looks like Nortent Vern 2 with uprated poles passed again..Aaarrgh go on Fellman..!!

Wow what a turn around from your first ( and very informative) video on what is likely to happen when camping in high winds in a Nortent Vern 2. It certainly comes across in the second video that the manufacturer was spitting feathers at the first video. What did they threaten you with ? Were they going to take their tents back from you and cut you out of their commercial enterprise. You back peddled so much and were tripping over yourself to apologise for all the mistakes that you made and telling us that it really is a great and wonderful tent ?? The tent failed because the poles were inadequate, simple as that. The fault of the designer. The proof of that is that Nortent changed the poles for a more sturdy set. As for doubling up the poles who in their right mind would spend £700 on a tent with you recommending that it's pretty much standard practice to double up poles in windy conditions 😅 . I think you did an excellent and fair review on your first video showing how poor the tent was ( not how poor your tent pitching was, which was fine ) and recommending not using the tent in over 30mph winds. Nortent obviously sat up and took notice and to their credit started to use stronger poles. Don't apologise for your first video and don't blame yourself for the way you erected the tent. Hopefully now the vern 2 isn't as crap as it originally was.
I personally use a mountain Star and Storm Star and find the latter a cracking piece of kit. I also use the very underrated Hilleberg Unna ( and I double pole it on occasionally, i bought the Unna second hand and it came with extra poles ) but prefer the SS.
Nortent, have been very cool and have appreciated my honesty throughout. Above all, they are progressing , listening, and developing. Their response to my storm camp was exactly the opposite of spitting feathers and built on my respect for the company.
It's a great tent. The upcoming Ly 2 should be interesting too.. Watch this space!

Since you've been making videos about the Vern series of tents, might you know if the PC (polycotton) version of the Vern 1 can be double-poled like the original? On another note, Kendo or Iaido?

It's also VERY interesting that in my email a couple of months ago to Nortent where I told them the ends were too shallow and needed to be steeper. They replied telling me essentially I was wrong and it would ruin the look of the tent. And now the advice is to tuck the ends and speepen the angle. Honestly you couldn't make this up.
Well, we can all be wrong, the important thing is to learn, change, and grow. Something I think Nortent is good at.
I think more important is to value and look after the people who bought their products in good faith, and not just dismiss feedback which was actually pretty obvious. I have to disagree that theyre good at it. They seem to constantly have to make changes because their original designs and ideas failed. Its firefighting. But again, if they had any integrity at all, they should supply the new poles to everyone who already bought the tent, not just new customers. If they dont, what they are saying is the first customers bought a substandard tent but tough luck. I certainly wouldnt be recommending their products to anyone as it woukd affect any integrity I had too. @Fellmandave1

100% agree. It would suggest they see feedback as outright criticism rather than taking it as constructive. They certainly wont ever get my business again. And ai wont be recommending their products to anyone, the opposite in fact. @thomasmusso1147
Looks like they need to add walking poles plus you'll probably need better pegs?
If it's pushed in won't that add flapping or is that pushed in material ignored I don't understand what happens to it maybe pole by door wider?

They should really offer to exchange the poles for everyone that bought the originals earlier this year. If they don't then they've basically used paying customers as beta testers. Shocking really. I can understand a tentmaker making adjustments over time as new developments occur but changing the poles less than 4 months after launching the tent, proves they got it wrong and customers should not have to bear the brunt of that. Really poor customer relations in my eyes. I certainly won't ever buy Nortent again that's for certain.

@Fellmandave1 if the early poles were fine, which videos have clearly shown they are not, further confirmed by such a rapid upgrading, less than 4 months since the tent was launched. They must think people are idiots if they think the line that it increases the operating window of the tent will be believed. It's very clearly the case that it brings the tent up closer to the operating window they were aiming at in the first place. People aren't fools Dave. They're taking them for fools.
I genuinely do not believe I'll be missing out on anything. And I certainly won't be supporting a company that is being so disingenuous to the people whose money they happily take.
You yourself saw my email to the company and my suggestions to steepen the ends and extend the guylines and their response dismissing those suggestions. Now they're advising my ideas.
Add to that having to double pole it and add the trekking pole. If you have to do all that to make the tent decent it's not a decent tent in the beginning. Having to go through all that hassle, might as well just build a shed. Or buy a better tent, of which there are many available. Absolute tragedy of a company.

I bought my vern 1 through valley and peak. Would be great if they could supply the poles and other accesories as the hidden taxes and deliveries are steep from nortent. Would also be good to see nortent do 10mm poles to see if that makes a difference
