    To me, this song was critical in George showing the world who he was as a songwriter and musician. There are 2 live versions everyone loves. There’s the most popular one from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, with Prince performing a monster solo and my favorite version from 2002 at the Concert for George, a year after he died with Clapton leading the way.

    • @budmcnew7763

      Yeah but Prince made it all about himself rather than a tribute to George. That's what it seemed like to me.

    • @showmoke
      @showmoke Před 7 měsíci +3

      @@budmcnew7763 - yes, that has been a criticism from many people. Dhani Harrison expressed his reservations about that exact issue after the gig, although on stage, he did appear to approve of what Prince was doing. But as far as the audience went, they were stunned and pleased by Prince’s performance.

    John and Paul were busy working on their own songs and George asked Eric to come help out on this song. As soon as he arrived at the studio, they dropped everything and started helping out. Paul created the now iconic piano intro. I think they just got into a rut. Much like when Billy Preston showed up, when Eric showed up, it changed the dynamic and got their creative juices flowing.

    Dude, you need to check out the Concert For George version. It has Eric Clapton on lead vocals and lead guitar, Paul McCartney on backing vocals (like in this version) and piano, and Dhani Harrison (George's son) on guitar as well. A perfect tribute to George. And yes, the solo fits so well it sounds like the guitar is crying. Pure genius.

    Not sure you know but George and Eric was very close friends for a long time. When George and his wife got divorced his wife then married Eric. Both of them wrote so many songs about her. She had 7 or 8 songs written about her or for her by the two of them.

    George wrote in his book " I, Me, Mine" that there was much friction among the band members while recording this album. One of his reasons for having Clapton do the solo was because his presence in the studio would put the others on their best behavior.

    Wonderful song Silas - this is one of George's many top class songs from his catalogue. But I have to say that the best version of this song is the live performance played at London's Royal Albert Hall exactly one year after the death of George. The concert (called 'CONCERT FOR GEORGE) was to celebrate the life of George and all the great players from the rock music industry were there on stage with Eric Clapton fronting the band. The video is on CZcams I think, but certainly this song is featured from that particular concert. I can't give a link here, because CZcams block messages now with links in the message. EDIT: Well they used to with me anyway! I see below that people have included links, so maybe CZcams have changed their minds about that.

    George got the start from a random phrase from the I Ching, "gently weeps". The lyrics are pretty random musings and there were a lot more verses that were cut. When I first heard it back in the 60s I assumed he was talking about a young gay man waking up next to his lover maybe a little hungover from a night of clubbing or drugging. I've gone back and tried to research what the song is about and apparently, it wasn't exactly about anything in particular but just a bunch of random phrases strung together that I guess the listener could interpret in their own ways. What do you think it's about? It is a bit depressing in lyric and tone. Regardless of what it "means" Clampton's guitar is amazing.

    • @tinalinge2782
      @tinalinge2782 Před 7 měsíci

      Taken from another source:
      The lyrics are beautiful, written in such a way that they can be understood either literally or metaphorically.
      Literally, one can imagine the singer sitting in the corner of a bedroom watching a loved one sleeping, possibly someone who has been in trouble or is unhappy. He sings that this person is capable of so much love, so much good, but they have been led astray, “perverted” by…could be by weakness or manipulation by others. The possibility for change, through love, remains.
      Metaphorically, the sleeping person becomes the whole of humanity. We are innately capable of so much love, yet we have been drawn away from its focus by manipulation, greed, lust, hatred - perversion, by others, or by governments, media, leaders, the Powers That Be.
      The singer sees these things and even his guitar weeps. Literally he sees dirt on the floor around him, metaphorically he sees the wrongs and injustices of life continuing, day after day, and nobody tries to change them - they need sweeping away, just like the dirt on his floor.
      There’s a lovely version of the song in the movie “Across the Universe”, it is played when the leading character first hears of the murder of Martin Luther King Jr. The words fit that terrible, and sad, situation so well.
