  • In this video we'll show you how to convert ProRes RAW to CinemaDNG, using Play Pro Studio. Play Pro Studio has several advantages, when it comes to ProRes RAW workflows:
    1) It supports the format better than any other tool on the market
    2) It reads out all the source metadata from the ProRes RAW files
    3) It supports all cameras and recorders that are ProRes RAW enabled
    4) It works on macOS and Windows

    Customer service was very helpful!
    Just bought a copy after I did a quick comparison between RAW Convertor and Pro Play Studio.
    First observations I made: RAW Convertor is a bit faster (maybe about 25%), but the resulting CDNG files on Play Pro Studio are smaller because I can select 12bit. RAW Convertor always converts to 16bit, even if the source doesn't have that much information.
    Play Pro Studio 4:1 lossy conversion is excellent! I always had to convert to losslessy with RAW Convertor and then re-compress using SlimRaw, because the compression quality was so bad.
    Play Pro Studio 4:1 file size is the same as 7:1 of SlimRaw with slightly better quality! This negates RAW Convertor's speed advantage, because I save a lot more time by not having to run the files through two apps.
    Play Pro Studio also has many more features, and I hope it will work with the S5IIx in the future.
    I also didn't like having to pay per camera.

      Something I notice is Player Pro transcodes my Sony Pro Res files to CDNG at about 30 to 40 FPS but on my S5 raw files it is about 10 to 20 FPS. It may be the difference with the Ninja V Raw vs Raw HQ

      DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY on 'Raw Convertor'. I bought that app recently and used it once because it would only convert video. The attached audio file is always 3kb of nothing. Then, the license suddenly went "missing" on its own. In other words, I can no longer convert anything. An email to the creator went completely unanswered. Another $90 down the toilet.

      Play Pro Studio with the above coupon code is $149 and supports all and any ProRes RAW enabled camera - RAW Convertor is 80 bucks *per camera*. Featurewise, there is also quite a gap between the two: Play Pro Studio reads all clip metadata, allows to export reports, trim clips before transcoding, allows to load, create and export LUTs and CDLs, can playback and transcode any camera RAW footage to ProRes, H264/h265 incl. all clip metadata and can even export that metadata as an ALE for other NLEs to import. It supports SDI output through Blackmagic, Bluefish and AJA hardware and also NDI output to pipe the image output into e.g. Zoom or other apps. And lastly, it can offload and backup all footage securely from camera cards, by creating checksums and verifying those. The price is pretty good considering what it offers.

If you want to talk about the price isn't right, Apple comes to mind. i can convert to any color space (that is recognized by Resolve) and Recover highlights from my Prores raw files before export to ProRes 4444 (if I need that much data). Another "price isn’t right" is any Adobe product or Final Cut X. I don't need either anymore.

    Will in the fully licensed version the option available to select vlog and vgamut in davinci? Right now in the trial we only have blackmagic film.
    Is there no way we can skip the vlog raw to vlog gamut log, like bake it in whole transcoding?

    • @AssimilateSCRATCH
      @AssimilateSCRATCH  Před rokem +1

      The options for DNG debayering are entirely with Blackmagic - nothing we can change, or put into the DNG. The only other option you have is to transcode to conventional ProRes instead. That can then have V-Log and V-Gamut baked in. Doing it this way is perfectly fine, even though the data might not be 'raw' anymore. You will still have plenty of image information available and no restrictions wrt dynamic range.

    Looking at the file inside davinci, there's a dramatic coloration of the cinema dng file. It looks like a CST or lut was applied, but I can't find anything to remove it. Is that just the effect of transcoding? It looks like the same thing happened to your clip, it loses that raw gray low contrast look. I'm just trying to make sure that I get the biggest raw file available to color grade in davinci with.

      DaVinci automatically debayers to Rec709 / Gamma 2.4. There is nothing we can do about what it does by default, but you can go into the RAW settings and change them to Blackmagic Film and get a log image out of it.

    How do you make a new project? I can't delete timelines either. Also, how do you restore settings to default?
    Things like this should be easier. Also, I should be able to see what codec a video file is in the browser on Assimilate before importing it.
    Just a PSA, your software needs to be polished, sorry.

    • @AssimilateSCRATCH
      @AssimilateSCRATCH  Před 7 měsíci

      In the project tree on the far left side, at the bottom, enable "Edit". This will allow you to rename timelines and groups, as well as delete them. There are no projects in that sense in Play Pro Studio - but you can use groups for that. To restore everything to default, simply open the Settings menu and hit the "Full DB Reset" button.
      Noted about showing more information in the file browser.

    • @AssimilateSCRATCH
      @AssimilateSCRATCH  Před rokem

      @@NathanKatash Encoding to BRAW is technically impossible, as there is no SDK for that. With CinemaDNG, Resolve only allows ISO to be controlled, if the DNG comes from a Blackmagic camera. We have thought about "camouflaging" our DNGs as such - but the metadata would then simply be incorrect. Also, adjusting the Exposure slider in the RAW settings yields pretty much the same result with even greater flexibility, than the ISO dropdown in Resolve ;-) .

    Once I have the CDNGs in Resolve, should I then do a Color Space Transform to get it back into the gamma it was shot in? So with my FX3, back to SLOG3?

    • @stevejones01
      @stevejones01 Před rokem +1

      In Player Pro you can do a CST to any camera gamma from your raw files (Slog3, v-log, Red Log, Arri etc.). You can also adjust the ISO and color temp. Resolve can't but you will have to export to ProRes then do the CST on that file in Resolve. It won't be raw anymore doing it this way.
      If you export to CDNG, Resolve only gives 3 options for color space on import, you need to pick one or it will default to Rec 709 srgb (it has to be something or you won't be able to see it). If you want SLOG3 you will have to pick one of the 3 and then CST to that or what ever you want it to be. It can be any gamma you want (Slog-3, Arri, Red, etc. It's still RAW) It all needs to CST down to REC 709 gamma 2.4 at the end of the node tree.

    I wish Red would stop suing companies so we can get better RAW that this craptastic ProRes Raw workflow from such an anti consumer company such as apple!! This format is annoyingly difficult to work with for no reason. With a camera like Alexa i shoot then just edit. In April 2018 Apple released ProRes RAW and yet we still have to use a $300 program just to properly convert video? Even Apple's compressor is $50, yeah Mac only but no subscription, has easy batch rendering, and i don't have to spend hours in a program i'm not going to use again in the workflow after. (to be clear, im furious at Apple and Red Cameras not Assimilate, at least your helping unlike apple. Assimilate makes a great (but complex) product!)
