Its really hard to state just how good this band, and this particular music is, in regards to historical context. There is no weak link in a 5 piece which is not as easy as you would think. Groundbreaking in just about every aspect. Its just very sad that when people here in the states, those in their 40's or so hear the name "Genesis" they think of Invisible Touch rather than what is some of the greatest music ever set to vinyl.
Gabriel was born in 1950. This song was produced on their 1971 album "Nursery Cryme". Imagine the talent required to write and perform such complex, epic music at the young age of just 21. Simply amazing!
Fantastic, used to listen to this with my mates, contemplating the Hogweed taking over the world as we sat there in a haze of smoke from another giant plant.
Brings tears to my eyes to see these guys at that age. I was raised on old Genesis - and this brings back many memories of their exceptional musicianship. Great band - in both the Gabriel era and after Phil took the lead.
According to Guitar World: "Hackett's early explorations of two-handed tapping and sweep picking were far ahead of their time, and influenced Eddie Van Halen and Brian May."
I'm being quite serious when I say that it is incredible how a small insignificant Island in off the coast of continental Europe has managed to produce some of the most unique bands. From Genesis to Pink Floyd to David Bowie to the Beatles to the Stones to Led Zep to .......... (add your list here), Britain has been unbelievably productive.
I'm not english; but I have to say that you're very right : They are the best for music, and very good in storytelling too; all those epic stories, and writters such as Tolkien, Edgar Alan Poe, Arthur Conan Doyle, and later Ian Fleming who created James Bond, and so much others !!!... Brilliant !
Van der Graaf, Mike Oldfield, Ozric Tentacles and of course the holy CRIMSON KING ! And electronic legends Simon Posford, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Goreshit and so many others
Laughing aside, sure you can run away, but if you get the sap on your skin, or in your eyes, you're in big trouble, and running wont help. It has the opposite effect to sunscreen, so you can easily end up with serious UV damage, and scars for life. (Hence the line "strike by night!") Various cases of blindness are recorded. Children are often affected.
29th June, 2019, i uploaded a hogweed video, with footage of the plant plus the original song, on my channel if anyone wants to see it after ? In my uploads from June 2019
Semplicemente Mostruoso!!!...L'arpeggio di Hackett al minuto 3,17 con il "letto" di pianoforte e batteria è uno dei momenti migliori di tutta la storia della musica!!!
Just realizing that they skipped quite a bit of the song, including a good chunk of the lyrics. :S Can't believe I'm only noticing this now, after so many years!
The funny thing is that I saw Genesis live back in the mid-70's and didn't notice the guitar technique being used by Steve Hackett because I was focused on Peter Gabriel. And I'm a guitarist!

hey ... you are also making a huge error. It has been around for centuries/ You only know one type of music I guess.. these guys are both 140 years late...
I love this song; the more I hear it I want to replay it! It’s funny, the description of giant hogweed on Wikipedia reads like the lyrics to this song. It’s making its way across the USA now. In 1918 some idiot brought it here, guess he never heard what a terrible reaction it causes in people. A friend & I ran into some in PA many years ago, growing near a creek. We got the sap on our hands, but there was some kind of reed growing nearby, which when broken open had a liquid which neutralized the “venom”.
My vote for best Genesis song ever, and this live-studio version better shows the manic paranoia energy (aka COVID) better than the slower version on Nursery Cryme. This was what my town was like when they discovered a patch of heracleum mantegazzianum growing at a nearby river. And the end trumps anything I've heard in heavy metal.
You can see at the end that this was a French broadcast (une émission de...) and the French word for giant is 'géant' so I imagine it's just a poor traduction
@die2no would it blow your mind to know that outside of a brief flirtation with weed, nobody in Genesis did drugs or partied? Because it blew mu mind. Their record label reportedly hired a private investigator to tail them on their first American tour, and the PI's report back was that he wanted to quit out of boredom (because they were so low key).
+JL inMS Really? I remember reading that Tony (I think) said that the music business was about sex, drugs and rock 'n roll and that they did them all. Maybe at the beginning they were low key, but if you watch footage from the Duke era, you can see that Phil is high as hell during the shows, he never had such look on his eyes before of after that. I suspect the band went through a lot less excess than others, though.
Phil used to have a little toke when doing the lamb tour but that’s as far as it went, I actually have a photo of him about to make a joint at headley grange during the lamb sessions.

@@StukaUK The story is a good one, and was relevant to its era. The GH was one of the first invasive species of major concern in Britain, because children played outside more in the late 60's / early 70's, and would pick the GH because it was so large and striking, and then develop a severe rash as a consequence, sometimes requiring hospitalisation. The media made a big deal out of that, and its their hysterical exaggeration which the lyrics are mocking, by elevating the GH to the status of the famous 'triffid' from Science Fiction, and its threats to the existence of humanity. It makes a highly original and 'fun' lyric in my opinion, especially at a time when singer songwriters would write cliched cr*p like: "as I woke up one morning............."

As a musician and music historian I have to say early Genesis is just garbage. Unlistenable garbage. Lots of people listen to this noise and think it's brilliant and I am happy for them, but I can tell you... it's garbage. Pink Floyd at this stage was sooooo much better.
