Who is Jezebel
Jezebel was a Phoenician princess who married Ahab, the king of Israel. Ahab and Jezebel's marriage was not just a political alliance; it also brought with it a clash of religious and cultural beliefs. Jezebel was a devotee of Baal, a god worshipped by the Phoenicians, and she sought to promote the worship of Baal in Israel.
Promotion of Baal Worship:
Jezebel actively encouraged the worship of Baal in Israel and attempted to suppress the worship of the God of Israel. She built temples for Baal and Asherah, and she supported priests and prophets of these foreign gods. This led to a period of spiritual conflict in Israel, with the prophet Elijah standing in opposition to the worship of Baal.
Conflict with Elijah:
One of the most well-known incidents involving Jezebel is her conflict with the prophet Elijah. In 1 Kings 18, Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal to a contest on Mount Carmel to determine the true God. The God of Israel demonstrated His power by consuming Elijah's offering with fire. This event led to the people acknowledging the supremacy of the God of Israel, but it also intensified Jezebel's opposition to Elijah.
Naboth's Vineyard:
Another notable incident involves Naboth's vineyard. Ahab desired Naboth's vineyard, but Naboth refused to sell it because it was an ancestral inheritance. Jezebel, seeing Ahab distressed, devised a plan to have Naboth falsely accused and executed so that Ahab could take possession of the vineyard. This act brought about a severe rebuke from the prophet Elijah.
Fate of Jezebel:
Jezebel's actions and influence eventually led to divine judgment. In 2 Kings 9, Jehu, a military commander, was anointed as king by the prophet Elisha. Jehu then executed God's judgment on Ahab's family, including Jezebel. When Jehu arrived in Jezreel, Jezebel, aware of her impending fate, adorned herself and looked out of a window. Jehu ordered her eunuchs to throw her down, and she was killed. Her body was later trampled by horses, fulfilling the prophecy against her.
The story of Jezebel is often cited as a cautionary tale about the dangers of idolatry, power, and the consequences of opposing the worship of the true God. It serves as a narrative of divine judgment against those who lead others astray. - Hudba
