I have no use for any off-road vehicle, regardless of manufacturer. However, Jeep is an icon, and I do admire them. Stellantis knows that Jeep and Ram are their cash cows, so they do a very good job of keeping them relevant, and desirable. I was grinning along with Tom, as it looked like a lot of fun driving the '392'. As always, fantastic video ...and gorgeous scenery. Thanks Tom 👍

Drove our lifted Jeeps, one on 37s and one on 39s on a 2600 mile road trip, no issues. The lumbar support helped, although the seats could be a little softer. Big improvement over the JK.

I think you hit the nail on the head. One day in the not so distant future there won't be vehicles like this. Probably most will be bought by folks that never take it off road.

I love how it's against the LAW to sell any new vehicle above list price in Canada. Dealers can lose bigtime if they try.

@@rickjames5998 cars get "sold out" quickly and once their are gone, they are gone. Like the Civic Type-R SE that sold out in minutes. Dealers get cars allocated to them (or place allocation requests like on the Civic Type-R SE) and it goes on a first come first serve basis to who gets the cars.
Importing them to the US from Canada probably eliminates any savings you get from that though right?
@@patricksoon85 it is pretty tough (if not impossible) to buy a new car from a different province due to taxation being different in each province (mainly linked to residency and sales taxes). I can only imagine it being even harder trying to get one from Canada to the US even with nafta (or whatever it is called now). I also suspect manufacturers would block it as they have different policies and car allocations for each country (likely dealers would be on the hook if they don't follow the policies). That said, used cars are a breeze to move back and forth across the border.

That music! A wonderful choice, partly because it has been a cliché (and this jeep does have something funny about it), and partly because it is so very beautifully orchestrated and yet so simple. It is "Morgenstemning" (morning mood), the opening of act 4 of Edvard Grieg's 1854-'75 incidental music to Ibsen's play, "Peer Gynt" (pronounced "pare günt," the ü halfway between an "ee" and an "oo").
I can't imagine what the dealer mark-ups are gonna be on this one.

Nice review! I moved to Hawaii (from Utah) three years ago, or I'd already be driving a Wrangler 392 Rubicon. Not everyone wants an electric car--or electric Jeep, for that matter. FCA and other car makers have lost their minds when it comes to pricing. Anything these days is well over 50k. My friend's Platinum F150 was less than 43 fully loaded in 2014, still looks new today and my XLT cost me 25 with decent equipment.
That's because out of 10 loaded $70k Wranglers they make, 9 out of them will be bought by people taking out $50k loans.
When the profit on option-laden cars is so easy, there is no incentive for car makers to make affordable cars. Those who snap up the repos in lean times will have the last laugh.
Sticker shock is on everything these days. But cars to day are a lot more electrical than in your parents day.
The antenna was a fun fact! My old Escape had the simple metal rod and got amazing reception compared to my new Fusion. It's noticeable I live in a hilly area.

The unwieldy driving dynamics affects the regular rubicon’s as well. I had a 2020 and it struggled to stay in a straight line.

They'll sell out very quickly, trust me. How it came about that many SUVs nowadays are charging toward the 100k mark, with many already over it, just stuns me. Still when Armageddon comes (again), this might be the car every 'survivor-man' will need to power his/her way to CostCo to secure a hoard of toilet paper and canned goods. Great intro by the way, really clever. One last thought: Isn't it odd now that some enthusiast are going bonkers over steel wheels? They used to be entry-level trims only. Now you pay MORE for them!

So I know down the road FCA/Stellantis will soon fase out the 6.2 and 6.4 Hemi's, when they do they should offer a limited edition Pacifica 392.
It may sound like an absurd thing to do and I don't know if the Pacifica will adopt the engine, because the Pacifica is on a FWD platform and all Hemi engines are mostly used in RWD platforms. But it will definitely sell or recive alot of buzz in the media if they offered such a absurd variant of Pacifica.

Good review, great camera work. As a long term jeeper keep in mind: I think you're right, the V8 will be more of collectors item for many, but for others (those of us who plan on running 40's) we'll appreciate the used 392's down the road with a few thousand miles and a cheaper price (let the new every 2 years folks take the initial financial hit, then pass on the scraps to those of us who enjoy 2 or 3 year old vehicles at 30k less than what the first guy paid. lol.) As for the handling, and "jeep specific" things. Well, it's a jeep. Its square, built for the trail and the road which means there's a trade off. Steering input, sure it will be needed especially after a lift and big tires but it won't be any different than driving a loaded pick up towing a trailer. In other words, attention will be needed but we don't get jeeps thinking they'll handle like a Mercedes SUV. (again give and take). For anyone looking at the latest jeep (JL, JLU, JLUR, or any of the other packages) just know, it's great at being versatile even lifted. It's good for long distance travel (crossing the country to get to Moab, the Rubicon, etc.) but it won't be like riding in a Escalade or Tahoe, but it doesn't mean you'll be beat to death. If you're a previous CJ, YJ, TJ, LJ, or JK owner, you'll notice how much better it rides and the 8 speed transmission in any power combination is part of what keeps the new JL(or JLU) in a good place regardless of what type of road or trail you're on especially if you're geared correctly for your tire size. It's great for going off road and it's awesome to know you're driving a jeep and can take the doors off, top down, or what ever you want to do. It's a Jeep. There is no other comparison. Bronco's are nice and capable and will offer a lot to those who want a little more on road comfort (due to the independent front suspension) and the flexibility of being like a jeep. I say there's no comparison, because the specific design of the jeep is what makes it what it is and you'll only understand when you actually use it to the fullest of it's capabilities including lifted and with larger than stock tires. It's not meant to be 100% SUV, or CUV, or sports car. It's a trail capable vehicle that offers other comforts to make it appealing in today's age. I think that's the biggest thing to appreciate about jeep. In looking at the original war time jeeps of yesteryear, the box design that keeps wheels out away from the body, the convertible aspect, folding windshield, removable doors, straight line of site, etc. all of these features are present in today's jeep.
For clarity, I have nothing against the Bronco, the 4 Runner, and all the other vehicles that people often compare too. I just think folks sometimes don't understand the full history of jeep and draw too many incorrect references and comparisons which is why I stated "there's no other comparison" .
Tom, will you try the opposite end of the spectrum of the Jeep Wrangler? A.K.A. the 4×e (the plug-in hybrid).

Thanks for the vid and review - I'm torn between buying the new ecodiesel for the MPG, but do I just fork out another $13K for the 392 for the "fun factor" and MPG be damned.....
MPG is not as bad as most reviewers make it out to be. I have over 8k miles on my 392 and I average 17 mpg for most tanks of gas. I drove it on a long trip on highways that averaged 45-55 miles per hour and I got 23 mpg on one tank and 22.5 on another tank. Higher speeds 70-75 I'll average 17 mpg. Everyday driving with a little bit of everything, including rapid acceleration, I get 17 mpg. I don't think the 3.6 does much better on mpg.
Did they upgrade the transmission or brake system to go along with all the extra power? Probably not
They use the upgraded 8 speed German transmission that comes with the 3.0 diesel and borrowed the bigger brakes from the Mojave and 4XE
Braking distance is 132 ft which is only 1 foot more than the small suv average of 131 ft.
Just wait till hennessey comes out with the V8 Bronco 750hp also at 4:10 can't Jeep paint the interior the same color as the exterior?

People don’t understand how (yet still slightly uncivilized) how much more civilized new wranglers are. I do road trips in my ‘98 wrangler, going 80 down the highway and it’s not so bad… if you think new jeeps are hard to handle, I’d say they are night and day better. The road manners are always over dramatized. Great review though.

Interesting test drive reminds me of my father’s best advice when looking to buy a high performance car, truck or SUV… If you’d have to ask the price of admission… Then you can’t afford this Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392… Otherwise, this Jeep will blows the doors off the competition like Ford Bronco and Mercedes Benz GL Yuppie Wagen

To compete with Bronco Jeep needs a mid size truck and a SUV based on it with independent front suspension. The steering on Wrangler is horrible on highway rides as it wonders and need constant correction, more power is not what it needs.

Love it, but a bit over priced. 10k less seems more reasonable. But still way over the top and not necessary...I would still get one if I could afford it and go to the mall to shop. LOL

Mine is still in D status, but rumor is FCA won't turn down money (I already have a VIN). You can get it shipped, or fly in and drive back. If that doesn't work, Peterson in Nampa, ID will do $2k under MSRP and has "unlimited" allocations (largest FCA dealer on the planet). Expected build date for both orders in August.
I have a two door JL Rubicon with a V6. It’s dangerous in the rain. Can’t imagine what the 392 is like.

Even with cylinder deactivation, it still gets shitty fuel consumption. Maybe the four-cylinder mode should also be an Atkinson cycle mode too.
Folks who can afford the 392 Wrangler could care less about fuel consumption.
I averaged 19.8 mpg from FL to PA and that included a ton of stop and go.

I have a JK with the 3.6 and I can't understand the people that want more speed out of these things. They're deadly enough as it is. For off-road I choose gearing over HP any day.
What a shame that Jeep did not choose to just put in a 5.7 liter hemi from a Dodge truck. I believe that truck version is rated at 395 hp. Correct me if I'm wrong. Then they could have priced the vehicle in some sort of a structure where average people could afford it. Say, make it an option across the board, or on at least the Sahara and the value-plus versions of the Wrangler and price it at around $2000 or $2500 (+/-). Instead, the made it only a Rubicon option and at the $25,000 option price just for the engine. That elevated the price to the $75-80,000 level and only Bill Gates, Elon Musk and a few of their cronies can afford it. That's very poor decision making in the marketing office of Jeep.
Auto manufacturers could care less about the common man these days... just take a look at the pricing on vehicles. You can't get a truck for under $55 grand these days because everything must be heated/cooled/massaging/sing you lullabies. Everyone wants the premium model. Personally, i would love a smaller V8 i in a base model 2 door like the used to offer in the CJ's. Gotta build it if you want it though! I am hoping in 10 years maybe ill find one of these 392's on the used market! Im ok with the scraps haha.

When we said we wanted a v8 option in the wrangler we didn't mean a top of the line all the bells and whistles wrangler. A 5.7 engine offered on all trims would've been enough.
It's called stupid tax and I'm all for it.
I think the top trim high pricing is the Stellantis way of keeping sales down and helping to pay the CAFE fines.

Let's see: take a vehicle that has marginal high speed stability; has worse than marginal crash survivability; and stick a heavy, and extremely powerful engine in it. Oh yes let's lift it higher off the ground. What could possibly go wrong?
Oddly the ground clearance is .5 inches lower with the lift kit. I'm thinking weight.
@@DrivenCarReviews Are you perhaps confusing ground clearance with center of gravity? And even if you are, it's putting a lot more weight on the front end. Which has a suspension system that was outdated during the Roosevelt administration

I think Tom's reviews are excellent and have been reading them for years, since they were on the New York Times. HOWEVER: the days of savouring the exhaust note of a gas guzzling V* engine are over, or should be!!! Just consider the recent climate catastrophes: start with the heat dome in the Pacific Northwest which is remarked on in this video; the catastrophic flooding in Europe, Japan and now China, the collapse of the apartment tower in Florida, etc etc etc etc!!! Why not focus on more environmentally responsible vehicles. Tom seems to really like electric cars - so????Over to you TV, enough of these once-fun but now totally reprehensible polluters! Thank you!
Thanks for watching Michael. I touched on this environmental aspect at the end. It's important. I also stated that this is a very limited run vehicle and won't be around forever. So not a lot of them. Also, I feel like these are going to be squirreled way in garages and not driven a lot. So there's that. Yes, I do like EVs but if that's all I did I would do 5 videos a year. So I think some fun and balance is okay. I think the larger environmental issue is Americans tend to overbuy their everyday cars but that's a topic for another day.
