How do we not know about this in news
In American news, hardly anyone cared because it's on another continent and didn't involve the US. In European news, it was reported quite a lot when it happened.
***** Well, I'm Portuguese, and I'm quite surprised no one ever talked about this. Thanks for reply anyway
EmperorTigerstar
when you say European news you probably mean French. they've got tons of interests in West Africa and this conflcit involved many francophone nations
The media will show you national news and important international news, if you really want to keep up to date with what is happening around the world its up to yourself to do the research :)
Attila the Fun Nope, in Poland they talked about this too.
I only knew about this because I have a friend living in Burkina Faso. There was zero mention of this on my nations news channels
Because it´s not that relevant, the country is both small, poor and far from the West. Why would it be relevant?
Because it shows that the world isn't going too bad, after all. Good and interesting news should be shown on our media.
Leurquin François media is more concerned with fear mongering and narrative pushing. That's what rakes in the profits.
Leurquin Francois yes this news to me is interesting news especially since this is about another country and not just my own.
they were too busy complaining about Trump
It was well played by the AU troops, I honestly expected Gambia to devolve into another Rwanda. They were patient and firm, avoided conflict and civil war but also got the job done.
Rwanda had more Ethnic conflicts, this was purely a civil conflict.
Zeitgeist Every "ethnic" conflict happens for political reasons.
Rwanda has 10 times the population, it´s harder to invade also.
This was an issue over an election and a transition of power, not conflict between two people groups and the land they live on. Ethnic conflicts can happen for all sorts of reasons, especially political ones, this just wasn't one of those.
Actually, all of Jammeh's supporters were Jola, and all of Barrow's supporters were Madinka.
No one, no media, no website, showed this to me since that time. I had just known this now.
It was actually covered in the news quite widely in the Netherlands

Menswear Shiba the AU is really getting its act together. I apparently sent successful peace keeping operations into Somalia and South Sudan.

Thanks to your video I'm only finding out about this now, this is big news.
Cat knight Same.
I think it's kind of interesting and positive, that African nations are cooperating. I think it would be pretty sweet if within my lifetime Africa became stable.
nah, too many conflicting beliefs, ideals, and cultures for a stable continent
@@orangesel9338 This was the case within india too, there was never the idea of a united india before the british arrived. Then, by the united wish for independence, a shared identity was created, with shared popular icons, sports and entertainment. Although regional differences within India are gigantic, there is relatively little racial or political violence, much less than you'd expect at least within so large a nation. I think it is very much possible that, within time, the nations and peoples in Africa will consider their own shared history of the nation (one of much conflict) a stronger part of their identity than that of the tribe or people they are, making them different but united, like India. I don't know when it will happen, but I'm confident that it will.
@@JarNO_WAY Caste system + lots of racism in India, not as simple as you think it is.
@@orangesel9338 you're framing me as if I said India is all rainbows and sunshine; it's not. The caste system is based on ancient institutions that have little to do with ethnicity, and racism exists everywhere in the world. What I focus on is how a previously divided region can unite under a common cause. There is no civil war, petty dictators or coup d'etats in India, because unlike African nations, India isn't ruled by a single tribe that supports their own people and supresses others. That's what usually causes the unrest in Africa.
@@JarNO_WAY It'll stay that way for the next 50-100 years tbh
Wait this actually happened? I was aware of the drama involving in election and the threat of Invasion, but I was completely unaware the invasion actually occurred.
Thanks, I guess.
Chips Dubbo It wasnt really an invasion. It was an enforcement of law. No shots were ever fired, the Gambian military sided mostly with AU but wanted to avoid a bloodbath with Jammeh's paramilitaries.
well, there were a few small skirmishes, but no loss of life.
You did better than me, I didn't even know Gambia had an election.
Stanley Understandable, African Governments aren't really known for elections.
I don't think the Gamiban high command sided with ECOWAS so much as it was that they were trying to save their own asses.
Thanks for making this. Not only did I learn something new about modern African politics, but it also shows how a group of countries in arguably the most unstable continent can form a coalition and get a dictator step down not only quickly but relatively peacefully as well.
Peter Cahill The dictator did run away with the whole treasury...
FooglesPlays Really? Well, shit. Let's hope Gambia is able to get back on its feet.

@@alexanderchristopher6237 I never got Trump's Agenda anyway. I never got how he was so damn popular among Americans, was he that conservative to he remembered as a good president or not?
This is actually pretty big that parts of the African Union actually created a military coalition to help a popular supported leader within their own sphere of influence. It shows that Africa might have a chance to become a unified political entity

Such a small act of stepping down and continuing the Democracy is a massive act in all of Africa. They really need a nation to rally behind in order to be united, like how they all rallied behind Ethiopia's defiance of Colonialism.
Glad that unlike the UN, the African Union is doing its job to promote stability, unity, and democracy across the continent. May the African Continent finally one day heal from the scars of Colonialism and become the Crown Jewel of Humanity.
Yeah, the UN needs to remove the veto of the 5 permanent Security Council members.
The reason UN gets so little done (I mean, it does a lot, but could do way way more), is that if just one of the countries of USA, UK, France, Russia or China is against something, it will not happen even if every single other country in the world votes for it..
@@Spacemongerr They could just make the positions open to all countries, basically remove the permanent 5 and just expand the powers of the elected part.
Man the African Union really just gets straight to the point. No sanctions or hollow public denouncements, just "Leave or we'll kick you out ourselves".
Yeah they have been stepping up their game in the past decade.
yep, though it'd be great if theu raise their standard a bit, slavery is still legal in mauritania
Cause the African Union knows everything about African politics. When a dictator or warlord rises up AU knows that only a show of strength and brute force would topple the madmen down. Africa isn't Western Europe where diplomacy and peace is held at a very high regard.
@@imgvillasrc1608 I honestly admire the African Union for that. They understand the language of the enemy and will speak to them in the only language they know: Power.
@@imgvillasrc1608 Also Gambia is a tiny country without much influence or power. This operation would have been near impossible for the AU/ECOWAS to do if it was about Nigeria instead.
It makes me sad this war happened because I had a Gambian friend since nursery, we were friends until 2016 when he went to Gambia (UK to Gambia) and he was my only best friend that time. Glad to see his dad is back but i'm not sure if my friend came back

This was really well put together, good job!
I remember following this closely online.
This is the kind of foreign intervention we ought to support.
Genuinely such a cool tidbit of history I never learned about. The African Union forces seemed to act with such professional restraint based on the video, making clear their capacity and giving ample time and then more than ample time to comply with the election results. Bravo!
Nice job. I've never really seen you transition the map from place to place/zoom in & out.
Glad to see the African Union step up & make Africa safe & peaceful!

Thank you for this! It was very interesting! I'm glad someone is covering something that isn't about the US lol.
One thing I would suggest is to add voice over to videos like this one. Some blind people might like to listen to the goings-on in the world.
Thanks for this! I hadn't realized this, and it's nice to learn something from CZcams about current events.
I do want to point out that this is probably one of the most one-sided conflicts you've covered on this channel. There were a lot of African countries backing Barrow, and Gambia is tiny as countries go. Senegal alone probably could have forced Jammeh out if it wanted to, considering it almost completely surrounds Gambia.

It's tough for those insane authoritarian leaders in Africa to let the bone go. But that's the consequences of the colonial past.
It´s not, it´s almost as if dictator rising just are a fact of human democracies.
ivaneurope The UN should have invested more into keeping the region stable but nope, they had to go and fuck up in the Congo on the orders of the Warsaw Pack and NATO.
James Pennington To be fair the former colonial rulers didn't make their life easy to begin with - many of the local rulers were not prepared to govern one the British, French etc. left. And what happen - civil wars, dictators and coups which ar typical for Africa
