  • Self-care is proving to be difficult to master and weave into our teachers frantic lives. As human beings we must prioritise our own well-being and as teachers as well we can begin to place the same emphasis on staff well-being in our schools as we do for the mental health of the children we teach. Self-care starts with you and small acts every single day. Imagine connecting to and feeling the magic you work so hard to create in the classroom and in your life. Imagine the impact on those around you and your own happiness levels. You are exquisite and far too important not to take care. Travelling took up much of Kelly’s 20’s before she jumped heart first into being a primary school teacher. Becoming a single, working mum of 2 small people wasn’t part of the plan, yet it became one of those life defining moments. A change of school, friendships and self-esteem levels, thankfully coincided with becoming a yoga teacher and self-care became a priority.
Kelly used everything she had learnt on her yoga journey so that she could continue to be a Mum, a friend, a daughter, a teacher, the light in someone’s day and a role model to others. Kelly is now at the very heart of well-being for teachers, empowering and supporting them every day- not just when times are tough. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I’m a first year teacher. It’s so hard. I’ve never treated myself and my health so poorly. Especially during a pandemic.

Well said! Unless lawmakers, administrators, and school directors start to acknowledge this huge issue, our educational system is doomed.

I would like to point out her statement on connecting to who you really are. I love myself but what I love about falling in love with myself is that I find these little things that have most likely always been there and I just now notice them. I notice them and I just fall in love with that quality of myself. For example I have a bounce when I walk, call it a skip to my step if you will and I notice it all the time now and I love it. I feel bad about something and I just keeping having a little skip in my step, it makes my day a little less bad. I love self discovery, it makes my day. I'm so glad that she mentioned connecting to who you really are because you'll encounter having to learn your method of teaching, which is who you are as a teacher and thus its a part of you as well.

I just recently became a para after 4 or so years of substituting. Definitely different substituting, then being a para.; after only two weeks of being at school then going virtual and then going back to school. Working as a para at the high school and then changing to an elementary school in a special needs class is more than frantic! Not a lot of time for self-care.
