I finished âA Little Lifeâ a few days ago, then sat staring into the nothingness around me for too long feeling all the feels. Itâs, hands down, one of the best books Iâve ever read. With that being said, I hope those with large audiences, & even those innocently recommending to friends, mention the multiple triggers in this book, as it may not be suitable for everyone. Keep it up, Jack! Love your videos. đ§Ą
Nothing compares
@@Mizt9462 Truly. I have seen a few recommendations of books in a similar vein, but âA Little Lifeâ is so special in & of itself.
i finished reading it about a month ago and still cant stop thinking about it?? like it low key has put me in a reading slump but like bc it was so good ??? i honestly agree 100% with the statement that the book finished me and not the other way around
@@mysharahman Same. I wanted more when it ended, despite it already being over 700 pages, hah. I have a long TBR list, but I feel you on the slump; nothing can come close to how âALLâ made me feel. please PLEASE read books that Hozier has recommended! that man is a lyrical genius and it would be amazing to find out where the heck he gets his inspiration!!
I think A Little Life is written really well, but I'm honestly always a little surprised at how it's so many people's favourite book. I read an article that described it as "a panopticon to the misery suffered by the people who can disconnect from it." which really struck a chord. Something about that book, and the latter half of it just never sat right.
yeah for me it kinda feels depressing for the sake of it. like almost sadistic?...
Thank you !! Like all these hyping up the book donât realise thatâs itâs basically torture porn ???
I agree a hundred percent. I thoroughly disliked it. None of the characters are well developed. I know everything about Jude's misery and absolutely nothing else other than mentions of how brilliant he is..
Same. It just feels like misery for the sake of misery, if that makes sense?
literally, it's just misery porn
Think Jack might need to change his âchef kissâ catchphrase to âone kissâ for this one đđ»
That's genius
That was good
Wait that one was good-
I think that Misery is one of the best books to start with Stephen King. It is so suspenseful and addicting and it introduces his style of writing so Well. I'm glad you read it and liked it
The film is also great
every time i hear about "a little life" its about how sad and tragic it is and now im scared to read it
u should be, its dreadful & has been tagged as torture porn
i think you shouldn't
It's one of my favourite books because the exploration of trauma and how positive relationships can help us cope/overcome it is just masterful. For me, it has always been a book about friendship and how it can be the light that guids us out of the darkest times.
It IS extremely sad (although "sad" doesn't even cover the despair and helplessness I felt reading it) and there are literally trigger warnings for everything you can possibly think of in this book (maybe except for animal cruelty) but I say it's worth the read if you think you can take it.
It's... a lot to take in emotionally speaking. It's beautifully written, but extremely overwhelming.
I think that the amount of suffering experienced by the characters in this book is unrealistic tbh and it feels very manipulative. It covers very sensitive topics, but it doesn't do them justice, it does it mainly for shock value. I mean how many times can one person be raped by different people in their life statistically? In this book it happens way too often, not to mention other troubles.
I love these almost as much as I love his books around the world series. I really hope he does a video of books by indigenous authors in future
Jack, video idea for you: Read every book Moira Rose is seen reading in Schitt's Creek

This NEEDS to happen!!!
Hahaha omg yesss

Would love this but they are actually not real books!! theyÂŽre fake just created for the show and always hint something about the scene. I immediately looked into it when watching schitts creek xD
A little life literally destroyed me and I took an attestation to the point that I did not go to university for 3 days because of the depression that accompanied my reading of this horrific sad book, I really highly recommend reading the Trigger Warnings before attempting reading this book.
the trigger warnings for this book have their own wikipedia page, would not recommend really, it messesyou up
@@memoriesintechnicolour1360 I knew that before I start reading it you should be in a stable mental state because it's truly devastating and heartbreaking in every way.
Unfortunately, that was exactly the authorâs intention. She just wanted to write the saddest thing she could, and it seems she didnât care which marginalised groups she had to exploit to get there.

I just started picking up reading again. It can be hard to understand all the English words sometimes but there are so much books to explore. Jacks videos really motivate me and gives me a shit ton of recommendations! Never disappointed!
Is English your first language?
The more you read, the easier it will get. You will find yourself learning and knowing so many words
English is my second language and this is so true, that's why I use Kindle.
I also came back to reading after a year or two of hiatus because of Jackâs videos!
same same same! although I mostly stick to audiobooks (a full decade of depression messed up my ability to focus and STAY focused so much that using my actual eyes to read is very hard), Jack's videos help to get interested in a book again!
I read The Underground Railroad in a lit class and we talked a lot about how the monotony of the writing was the POINT of the book, because we often talk about these topics in a way that's so dramatic and outrageous when in reality, slavery was happening everywhere in the USA. It's not a big special story, it is a version of a story that was happening to every enslaved person in America. I do agree that other books about the topic that do enhance and tell the stories in strong detail are important and can be more entertaining to read. But I think it's also cool/important to read about it in a way that really enhances (for me, anyway) the idea that it wasn't a special or singular story, it was a common one.
I would agree if it was fact-based, but (for me) the author imagining what it would be like if the underground railroad was an actual locomotive takes this from an authentic slave narrative to speculative fiction. it was the lack of depth in the characters that made me not enjoy this book!
@@jack_edwards wow ty for responding! I definitely agree it's a weird mix between historical and speculative that I was not vibing with at times. I do think the characters not having much personality was intentional, but that also makes it very boring to read :/
This was a really interesting comment

You should check out some bulgarian literature! Some classics are "under the yoke" by Ivan Vazov (aka one of THE most significant pieces of literature in bulgarian history), the peach thief by Emillyan Stanev, the iron candlestick by Dimitar Talev. I absolutely adored the iron candlestick, I literally finished it two days ago and it was so good! It's about the struggle for political and religious independence of the Bulgarians in the early 19th century (and there is a romeo-and-juliet type background love story sooooo)
um would reading the books in english take away from the experience of reading them in their original language or are there good editions that translate these books beautifully? bcs i've experienced reading arabic works translated to english and they didn't do it for me like in i enjoyed reading the original work wayyyy more
@@rayaanne1719 hmmmm that's a really good question. I haven't read a lot of bulgarian books translated in english, because bulgarian literature rarely gets translated in english tbh (except for the really popular books). With that in mind, I don't think that the difference would be that big. You do need some historical context for "under the yoke" and "the iron candlestick" tho. Bulgaria was under the ottoman rule for about 5 centuries and they (and the greeks, but that's another subject for another day) really tried to remove any trace of our culture. Till a certain point, church ceremonies were held in greek, not bulgarian. You have these rich people ( I have no idea how they called them in the english translation but the ŃĐŸŃбаЎжОО in bulgarian) that often sided with the turks aka betrayed the nation. For additional context - bulgaria gets the desired independent church in 1870, and then in 1878 bulgaria gets freed from the ottoman rule with the help of russia (I am not just saying this for fun, there is a lot of foreshadowing for this event in the iron candlestick). I think that's it.
In those novels, the Bulgarian language is a bit difficult to read, even for me, but they probably simplified it a lot for the translations.
@@rayaanne1719 if you are interested in reading these books, I encourage you to quickly google the bulgarian national revival and the fight for independence, simply because those books kinda expect you to know what is happening? Trust me, a quick 15 minute research will make your life much easier and reading the books would be much more enjoyable. + you get to learn some new things about a smaller, but really fucking old, country !
@@rayaanne1719 THIS TURNED INTO A HISTORY LESION AHHHH but yeah, in the end, some of the magic is probably gone, but I still think that they are worth the read

I hated it. The author herself has stated she sought out to write the saddest book possible, and this book very much felt like writing for the sake of shocking people instead of to tell the best possible story. I was angry by the end of it.
