      Having his faith inform what he does is fine; imposing his idea of faith on secular society by welding state power in govt position would be wrong. I’d rather faith/spirituality wasn’t discussed in the same sentence as any politics at all, but we’re nowhere near that.

    I was brought up here in Texas and was baptized and became a member of a southern Baptist church. In the summer time we attended vacation Bible school where we learned about the King James version of the bible, old & new testament and other religions. I can tell him and anyone who may be interested that the churches here are nothing like they were back then. We now have Evangelical mega churches that are big business. The church really started to change when Ronald Reagan brought the Evangelicals on board to vote for him. This young man has explained it well. I am no longer a member of any organized religion as I dont feel it is in my best interest..

      They've become shows, not sermons. I too was raised as a Southern Baptist, and left the church when I was 13 (1971). Now they preach what people want to hear, without any guilt for their true religion, which has become material wealth, and castigating anyone who isn't a part of their tribe.

    • @starpenta
      @starpenta Před 22 dny +2

      I grew up going to a SBC, too. My family started when we were so small, we had sermons in people's houses. It kept growing over the years and I was a little bothered when the preacher moved into an upscale neighborhood but the real questioning started when his daughter went through puberty, started hanging out with the rich kids and being a total snob, even to the people who had been going to that church for years. But, that was just the start of the Q's. So many more in the years that followed.
      It's been a few decades since I quit going there and for now, I live in a different city, same state...a few years ago a friend was driving me to something else in the place I grew up and when we drove by, it wasn't even recognizable. It was huge and my preacher was no longer there bc of a scandal with a 17 y.o (which surprised me bc his 'Achilles heel' was greed, not girls)
      He was always nice and more like an uncle to me. I didn't dislike him, but I was actually more disappointed in the church becoming a megachurch. But I quit going long before that so...

Why oh why can’t soooo many who call themselves Christian, hear this man, not understand how far away from the teachings of Jesus they are? The trumpies seem to think that it is godly to parade around in American flag clothing, spew vulgarity, threaten lives of anyone they feel like doing so to and most importantly, not understand that every human has the responsibility to know the truth. Our Founding Fathers witnessed European religious wars occurring over centuries and wanted to prevent that from happening here thus insisted there be no national religion. @@janicelawson7518Of course it was. But it wasn't a coincidence that the government/ruling class was Protestant and the hoi polloi Catholic. The millenia of religious persecution was not only about religion but also power and wealth. There isn't much room to insert detailed discussion in the comment section of a podcast. I commented because as much as I love Anthony, just as "American Exceptionalism" annoys him, British superiority sticks in my craw. I'm so glad Europe has made strides towards tolerance, but even today the uproar would be deafening if the British monarch married a Catholic. Our founders wanted out of religious morasses, and it's devastating we aren't heeding their wisdom.

    I THINK that overpopulation and religion are the two greatest problems facing the human race. Overpopulation starts all the conflicts. There's only so much of anything to spread around to the Earth's population--land, clean water, food on and on and religion starts and aids wars. Every warring nation or organization thinks God is on its side. Religious people don't NEED fancy and expensive clubhouses--churches or mosques or temples or whatever--for their meeting places. They can worship their deity at home in their own minds.

    I ask the question: Why would Jesus say for us to love our enemies… or to treat others as ourselves? I have come to a conclusion that what near death experiencers say comes closer to the truth than anything I’ve read in a religious text. They say that no one judges you during your life review… but that you experience everything you’ve ever done to everyone else. This happens to such an extent that you not only feel how they felt when you helped or hurt them, but you see the ripple effect you created after that person went on into their lives. To me this means that we are all connected no matter what you think, whether that means belonging to a “nation”, religion, or “race”. It may sound “new-agey” but we are One… far closer together than Lennon’s “‘imagine”… but not a clue because we only measure each other by our 5 senses and our intellect. But you’d never hear that from the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025…. and their “messenger” Trump.

    34:22 I appreciate he is trying to do the right thing. But this guy knows nothing at all about countries that aren't America. There are other democratic republics around the world, without a monarchy, successful in their own ways, that have been doing this for yonks. It is not an experiment for them. 🤦

      Oh yeah, austerity is such a great thing-- no divide between rich & poor with maggie, nosiree! Just those wonderful tories generously depriving social programs to pad their pockets & offshore accounts. Why just recently, a disciple of hers awarded £37Billion to a rich pal. Yup, old maggie closed down many a quaint old english town. And a recent version of mags has closed down a town in Wales. Class acts one & all, even the ones who've had to resign for sex scandals. Just makes you want to dig up old mags & bury her again.
