Really nice way of translating fraction to percentage ;o) Regarding n/36 fraction, you can also use x2.5 +10% and even adjust by +1 for the top half top of the range, i.e. 19+. It is a bit more involved and accurate.

Each situation would be different but yes often a good estimate is close enough. For example if you were in a non-contact race and facing a cube, cash game, and nothing crazy with distribution of checkers, then once you have determined that you are at least 25% to win the actual % doesn't matter, it's a take. Or say you are thinking of cubing in a race and using the 8-9-12 rule, once you see you are at least 10% ahead there is no need for further accuracy. Years of experience playing also helps to identify which situations require accuracy and which do not.
