You'll notice during the introduction that at one point he plays a single note. And shortly after two "calls" (like hunting calls). Quite a few soloists don't bother to play those items in the introduction and start after the intro is over. But I think it was part of Haydn's way of sort of tricking the listener into thinking they were going to hear the usual thing for a natural trumpet. But he wrote this for his friend who had developed a keyed trumpet that could play all the notes and, as far as I know, this is the first piece written for a trumpet that could play a chromatic. When this was first performed, this would have been a completely new thing for the listener. So, he has the "calls" which people would expect. When the body of concerto starts, he has a scale fairly early on which would have been a little surprising. And shortly after a descending partial chromatic scale which likely amazed people. I think Haydn was leading the listener step by step to this new type of trumpet and those calls are an important part.

For all the "armchair principals" commenting that his style is not dramatic enough or that his articulation is too soft, I would remind you of the historical setting of this piece. First off, it was composed by Joseph Haydn at the height/end of the classical era, an artistic and musical time period that valued elegant restrait above all other things. Second, his articulation would match that era's goals, seeing as how it never shocks or offends any audience member. As much as I love Hardenberger's flamboyant rendition (I've listened to it hundreds of times, no exaggeration) this performance is probably more suited to the piece and genre. Bravo!

Very, very nice. And immaculate intonation. The higher trumpets (like the E flat he is playing) can be a little more difficult for that than B flat or C and it can be harder to get all notes to be at pitch. I liked the piano arrangement, and the piano accompanist was superb. I've heard this a zillion times over a lot of years (and played it myself) and this is one of the performances I would suggest trumpet students listen to. And then find one where the performer tries to make it all about his or herself instead of the music as written and intended (like how some singers murder the National Anthem) and you might appreciate Mr. Tarkovi's performance even more.

Absolutely gorgeous! The first movement very elegant, cadenza much too ambitious but very well executed.
I would suggest Gabor to play the second movement as softly as possible, I mean softly as possible.
Any crescendo within the movement no more than a mp! We are constantly criticized we can not play softly, always blasting everything.
The third movement is simply brilliant, the tempo is exciting, precise. Try not to crescendo at certain spots to a ff level.
Somebody did a very good job arranged the piano part to support the solo trumpet!

Can you NOT HEAR THE DWAH attack? I don't need to win the NY Phil audition to be able to objectively point out a shit attack, do I??? Actually, to classical trumpeters, it seems without some lofty title, my words mean nothing:) Compare good ole Gabor to other Virtuosos and you will find your ears will agree with mine. So this is as good as Maurice Andre, Wynton Marsalis, Arturo Sandoval, Chris Coletti/Canadian Brass? Are you kidding me? You know, not many people know who the principal trumpet for the CSO was before Herseth got there. Stop attributing miraculous trumpet ability with a) basic compentency (of which too many pros even lack, re technique, range, attack, musicality, etc.) and b) a job with an orchestra, no matter what City they reside in. So troll, come back at me with something intelligent about trumpet, otherwise go listen to more Taylor Swift, she matches your level of self doubt and idiocy.
