Heil Sound Parametric RX Audio System Demo

- The Heil Parametric RX Audio System is an equalizer specifically designed to pull weak signals out of HF radio. The EQ and powered speaker are sold as a kit (for now) and are also sold separately, so you can use the PRAS equalizer with another speaker you might already have. Watch the demo video for what comes in the box, and how I tune in a weak signal. The audio quality came through the video feed better than I suspected it would.

I use a PRAS and powered speakers on each of my base station radios. Yaesu FTDX101D and Yaesu 991A. Really REALLY like them.
Bob knows what he is building. It definitely pulls the voices out of the mud.
Agreed. He called me today and gave me some further tips about this device. I will be taking it with me on DXpedition in a couple of weeks, and showing on video some more.
Thanks for the video. I could definitely hear a difference on the weak signal as you rotated the dial so it appears to be doing its job even with the filtering in the Flex Radio being as good as it is. I’d like to hear the difference on an older radio like you suggested, I imagine it would be quite dramatic.
Agreed. I may try it with a QRP rig in Costa Rica during my trip.
Your videos have come a long way. I have the PRAS and you have to use it some before you get the knack of it. I seem to adjust the "freq" knob under the "MID" section the most. My initial efforts with that system didn't provide much enhancement but once I began to understand it a bit the effectiveness increased dramatically. Bob Heil doesn't produce any junk- seems to be a good dude. KC5LL (EDIT: I'm using this PRAS with a Yaesu 991. I am using the JBL Control 2P powered speaker)
yes but there way to over priced
So what are your thoughts on the Pras now after 2 years of use?
I've not used it in a few months but last time I did, I still enjoyed it. I have plans to add it to my new setup in the shack.
your voice keeps coming and going.
Have used this for almost a year now.... I sure would NOT want to be without it.....all the difference!! Custom tailor the audio to YOUR ear!
Agreed!
I have one I also have the speaker but tend to use with headphones, my hearing is terrible ! The unit works very well and I am pleased I bought it. I use with a IC 7300. However mine after a month developed a fault and had to be sent back it was repaired and returned and has been ok since. When returned there was a crack in the meter dial that was a shame but I did not do anything about this as it does not impede the way it works. Would I buy one again YES .
very nice video. I just wish you would have used a crappy radio like most of us use rather than the Cadillac of rigs so I could see what it might do for me! Thanks for another great video...
Please show more info regarding the add on device for the hearing impaired. I need to adjust each ear separately.
Why you didn't split the output of the receive EQ and sent it to a channel on your mixer ? I know you were trying to show how the speaker sound. Is very hard to show the true sound of a speaker thru a microphone that has is own frequency response. Heil microphones are good microphones but they have a boost on the mid frequencies. I'm sure the speaker sound very nice in comparison to the crappy speakers on any rig.
I use the PRASEQ with my Yeasu FTDX101MP which has a great receiver.... so then, with the MP, many faint signals are heard on that other radios just do not pull in. With the PRASEQ system (using headphones or the powered speaker(s)) I can, 75% of the time "dial in" a faint audio signal and better define the audio and hear the audio (which otherwise in not intelligible). It does not fix QSB which of course is band and condition related. But that said, from the East Coast I can pull in Japan, Australian and New Zealand station's audio and with a tiny bit of dial fiddling on the PRASWQ turn faint mush into an understandable and successful QSO. It is a pretty good system. I power the system via my 12v Anderson power pole distribution panel and put torrioids on all the wires. The onboard headphone amplifier(s) are very good, clean and adjustable. I am glad I have this system and would I buy it again? Yes. If you cannot hear them you cannon work them. Mr Heil is a genius and I love his videos, so much to learn there. What I don't understand is why this kind of equalizer isn't standard in all SDR software (especially like that one for the super expensive Flex radio). Not even simple addon software or plugins. If I was rich I would buy this PRAS thing :)
I know it may not be as exciting but the best comparison would be playing a recorded conversation with and without processing.
I'll probably do something like this in Costa Rica next week
Great Demo! I'm pretty sure if you go into the setting of the Maestro to deselect front speaker.
I bought the peas with speaker shortly after I saw this review. I am using it with my IC 7610. It is worth what I paid for it. I can copy stations that I could just barely tell that they were there before.
I’m glad to read your comment, just ordered PRAS with speaker to my IC-7610 also. Great review Janson 👍. 73 de CT7ABD
Just bought the JBL powered speaker that Heil worked with them on. Its a really nice powered speaker. I connected to a mixer board, but considering this equalizer. Pretty pricey though....not sure that it will do anything more than a decent mixer that has low, mids, and highs
I was going to say the same thing it's a mixer with audio in from audio out your radio, it looks nice but you could do the same with my DJing mixer like the DJM 800 or DJM 400, with a really nice powered speaker :) still a really nice product for people not sure on how to set this up on a mixer.
but im sure if you mess around with it rob for a bit you mite luv it i do and trust me im hard to please and that pras is great
love seeing that FT3 price sinking like a rock.
The FT3D?
Ham Radio 2.0 Yeah. It was at the top of the ad your were showing. Down from 449.00 then 429.00 now 419.00
Yep, true.
The Maestro has a built in EQ on one of the setting menus. It would be interesting to see the settings for this test. Not sure if the RX EQ is only for the internal speaker or if it's connected to the line out jack on the back? I would think it's connected to the line out so if you have a power speaker that doesn't have EQ settings you could tweak the audio. I don't know what the default EQ is on the Maestro...I would assume it's flat across the board for both TX and RX.
Yes it is flat. I wanted to keep it off for this test.
@@HamRadio2 It would be interesting to hear the Flex EQ compared to the Heil just to see if there is any advantage to owning this system with a Flex specifically.
Bob Heil knows his audio, so I'm sure this works well, but I actually get angry when I see people put "ham radio" and a technical sounding name on some very, very basic audio processing gear and then put a price tag on it that's at least two to three times the price for the same (or more) capability from almost any pro audio manufacturer. And hams buy it!
A Behringer XR12 effects mixer will do everything described (and in stereo so it can split the feeds from a dual watch setup), will monitor multiple radios at the same time with all the audio shaping tools and volume controls tailored to each radio/mode, and even more capability in audio shaping (like multiple EQ modes, compression, etc.) and will output it to whatever speakers or headset you want. Also will handle all the audio shaping and phantom power requirements for almost any microphone and can change it from rag chew mode to chasing DX with one click. And it's $250. And yes, you have to add a decent speaker(s) to it. Decent studio monitors for the frequency range we work can be easily found for $50-$100. I happen to like JBL.
Add a W2IHY iPlus to it (for another $239 for a $100 piece of gear because it's got the moniker "ham radio" on it but has a unique functionality so it's worth it) and you can switch a single mic, key, and PTT across all three radios with a single knob turn. The XR12 also will set the mic output level with a single click so you can use one mic across all brands of radios as well with no need to worry about what design (electret or dynamic) of mic the radio is looking for. Did I mention all that functionality is $250? And if you don't like Behringer, Mackie and several others have similar boards and similar price points.
Bob knows his audio, but his brilliance is in marketing! :-)
I spoke to Bob Heil directly over the phone about this unit. He says there is no other unit like this on the market anywhere. Something internally is different from the commercial pieces you are talking about. I don't know all of the technicial specs of sound equipment, etc - but you might contact him directly and pose your questions to him because, according to what HE told me, your statements above are incorrect.
I may do that. That said, there are only so many ways to process audio to break out one sound from another. Did he by chance tell you what it is that he believes is "unique"?
I went through the specs again. At least what little is published on the website. I still don't see that it is anything other than a 3 range single channel parametric equalizer. Again, I'm sure it works well because Bob does know his audio. It may be unique in that no one else on the market sells a 3 range stand alone, single channel equalizer. All that I usually see are incorporated into a mixer or other gear. And only W2IHY is producing 1 specifically "designed for ham radio" (and his is only on the transmit side). Again, the man is a marketing genius. I may be a little cynical about him, but I'm generally not critical of his products, only his pricing.
Jason how did it work in Costa Rica and are you still using it? My FTDx10 has a built in rx eq and I can turn up the mid range and adjust the hi and low. I wonder how much of an improvement it would make for that radio which is still at Yaesu by the way, getting a new board.
RFI magnet.
You need to turn it off so we can see how good it is
if you have a modern radio you really don't need this stuf.
Lots of not-modern radios out there
At first glance I thought why wouldn't a mixer board with a built in equalizer for each channel do the same thing but I am clearly out of my league here. A lot of money but it's ham radio...right? Obviously you have a mixer for your video production. Can you try that on a channel and use that equalizer and compare? For the money it better be a single channel equalizer on steroids. Oh wait, that is the whole kit price. Maybe not so bad as most add-ons are $200 or more.
This EQ is specifically for a Radio receiver. Not a video recording system.
@@HamRadio2 , audio is audio whether it's coming out of an IC-7300 or a digital recorder. An EQ simply raises or lowers the sensitivity in the chosen frequency range. Pulling a voice out of band noise is no different than making your voice sound more mellow by emphasizing the lower frequencies or getting rid of a sibilant "s" by reducing the higher frequencies.
to tell you the truth i think you buggered that up aswell you havn,t got a clue you done that all wrong and i don,t think you done bob any favours sorry if you don,t like what i say but its the truth because you never once showed us the pras do what it can do and i have heared it and mate you done it no favours. so bob if you want me to do a proper review on it send it to me because i can,t realy afford one and by the end of the month you will have them flying off the shelfs 73 ste in skelmersdale england
Awful large speaker might have to put it on the floor.
