@@TheRealRichardWong I just used it like you showed in the video. I had read reviews that it wouldn’t work with the ZF but it worked right out of the box. I’m using a non coded Voigtlander and plan to get a 35mm Summicron in the future. I almost shipped the ZF camera back because I couldn’t nail the focus without zooming in. With the SL2/S1/Q3 the EVF is so good you don’t need to zoom in and that’s what I really wanted. But this adapter works so well!

Thank you for introducing me to Trap focus.
The issue with trap focus in AF-S with a7 "AF activation" turned on is that the camera will happily continue to take photos once focus is confirmed even if the subject moves out of focus. You have to release the shutter button to reset the AF indicator box again, which can be quite annoying if your subject is moving back and forth.
The alternative is just using AF-C with focus priority. The AF box will not turn green (on non-Z9 bodies) but it only releases the shutter during the duration when the camera deems the subject is in focus.

Does this smart adapter provide any advantages for the new Nikon ZF (supposedly already allows for eye/face detect with manual lenses)?
Great video bro.. I have some questions, if using this adapter with wide open aperture lens, like Ttartisan 50mm f0.95 and Ttartisan 90mm f1.25. When use at widest open aperture and closest focus distance, do you see some additional vignette compare to dump adapter?
Because the lens back element is big and it's move forward in close focus.

Thank you for this comprehensive video! Can I ask you to clarify whether or not focus confirmation works on the ZF using the TTArtisan 6-bit and a non-CPU lens?
I am looking at purchasing an M-version of the Thypoch Simera and the ability to have focus-confirmation / trap focus is a must-have for me… I’m not a fan of punching in or using focus peaking…

I have a couple of questions about the M-Z 6bit Adapter Ring that I hope you can answer:
Does the adapter allow for highlight-weighted metering to be used with manual lenses?
Does the adapter allow trap focusing and triangles+dot focus aides to be used with m-mount or other lenses that do *not* have 6-bit codes?
hi Alexander, i don't have the setup to test for you, but for highlight-weighted metering, i believe it would just work fine?
And re trap focus/dot focus it works fine with non 6bit code

I asked about highlight-weighted metering because Nikon Z cameras don't normally engage this metering mode with adapted non-CPU lenses. I would be thrilled if the TTArtisan adapter would allow me to utilize highlight-weighted metering with legacy manual focus lenses. (It still baffles me that Nikon Z cameras don't allow users to utilize zebra patterns for stills shooting.)

Do you have any thoughts on the corner performance when using M lenses on Nikon Z cameras? (corner "smear" issues / the lack micro lenses on the Z's sensor compared to sensors used in digital Leica cameras specially to accommodate using M lenses)
I haven't done any side by side testing comparing a Leica camera with Z. But I did some comparison of the SL2 with the Lumix S1R, and the Leica sensor which was optimised for M lenses does output slightly better image quality: czcams.com/video/TXGEf7ZMDfE/video.html

oh that is the standard lens hood for the TTArtisan 35mm APO lens.
Thanks for the review. It is great to have the ability to populate exif files with focal length info, and the trap focus trick is neat. I assume from the review that this adapter does not have its own helicoid (for better minimum focus distance), correct?
You are correct, it doesn't have helicoid for closer focus distance
@@TheRealRichardWong a pity....just cannot have it all. I routinely use the magically excellent Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 zm as "standard" lens on a Z7, with Voigtlander's m-to-z adapter, and the helicoïd really helps dramatically increase the usefulness of that compact setup (food pics, flowers, close-ups of small objects, unusual portraits, etc). But I do miss the exif data when sorting out images later, and that trap focus capability would be an asset when subjects move around.... Guess there is not enough space in such an adapter to accomodate both an helicoid and the electronics (m-code sensor, cables, nikon chip)....
yes i guess it's probably technically very difficult to add helicoid/movable joint as there are already 6 bit sensor, some microchip/electronic components..etc inside the adaptor already.. Well maybe give the engineers a few years time, they could make it possible?
I hope TT artisan can make a Z tp EF mount adapter with the focal length dial that will send exif to the camera and focus trap with adapted EF lenses ( No cpu lenses )
What about adding an EF to M mount to this adapter, will that work?
Is there a way to force ordinary non-cinema lenses to focus using the follow focus system without edges for focus? What if you put the most optically perfect laser on Nikon and add a follow focus to it?
You could attach a geared rubber ring to a normal lens if you want to use a normal lens with follow focus
Dji has a lidar lens focuser, you can adapt most non cine lens as well, you basically add a strap with gears to the lens. ." DJI Ronin 3D Focus System" LiDAR [Time of Flight] T.O.F. sensor.
Can you use stacked adapters? Leica M to Nikon F on top of this adapter…?…
in theory you can do that but i haven't tried that myself
My Adapter not work after Zf body update to version 1.2, can not take photo, the shutter can not press, Techart TZM-02 no issue at all after update to 1.2
Hi Richard, just got my z7 and ttartisan m-z 6bit adapter and I set AF-S and focus to on. Shooting in M mode, when shutter is pressed it takes the picture.

Yes it does
Richard. You can set custom lens type (non cpu lens) in the menu and put on the focal length in the camera, which may cover a few other lengths that are not in the adapter, as it covers all old Nikon focal lengths like 85, 86 and 100 etc. This looks similar to the old focus chip that rokinon put in f mount lenses that would send focal length and focus setting to the camera. Great review. I was not aware z cameras still supported trap focus, so thanks for the tip. Happy Diwali
Hey Barry, Happy Diwali! Do you mean go to the non-CPU lens setting and enter the focal length? That wouldn't work because the adaptor pretends it is a lens with cpu chip so the camera doesn't use those data.
yes the Z still supports trap focus! But only works if you use a lens/adaptor with CPU chip

Shame they don't have some custom options on the dial for unusual focal lengths - say C1, C2, C3 etc. The settings for each could be edited using the USB port.

I haven't got a chance to test it with a Zf yet. But @vc6218 just posted on this video that he tried and it works for him right out of the box.

Thanks for the reply. That motivated me to deep further dive. I was able to update the firmware of the adapter with the latest available (v1.0.1). By doing so, I noticed that the adapter I had received had probably not a functional firmware (the info was not readable).
Long story short: it works!
Trap focusing works like you describe in your video but with the new Zf! On top of that one can use the AI and automatic face and eyes detection. It works great! Both in trap focusing mode (either AF-s or AF-c) but also with simple focus confirmation in manual mode (the square around the eye or face turns green).
I have tested with the 50mm voigtlander APO. Works great!. I have also tested with stacked adapter and the 24mm Nikon Ais. Works also great! Same with the 105mm ai. Only gotcha with the latter, there is a pronounced vignette.
All in all, I think it makes the Nikon z platform and in particular the Zf -with its eye and face detection - a fantastic platform to adapt Leica m mount lenses or any legacy manual lense. Probably even more attractive than the Leica Sl platform. Happy to share more insights if you wish!

Thanks for the review. Can you confirm that IBIS is working properly with non-50mm lenses?
I am asking because Megadap MTZ11 doesn't communicate focal length to the IBIS even though EXIF is correctly recorded. This is very obvious when using super wide lenses as well as telephoto lenses. It appears that IBIS is set for 50mm no matter what focal is designated.
I only have 50 and 35mm lens with me right now, both seems to work. But i don't have anything longer and wider right now. sorry
@@TheRealRichardWong What happens if you change focal length to 28mm or 135mm while using your 50mm? Do you see any difference in IBIS behavior then? You should, if IBIS adjusts itself for the set focal length. If you get to check it, I would really appreciate your results, thanks.

@@TheRealRichardWong Thanks for your reply. If IBIS communication doesn't work properly, you can confirm it like this: Put on the 50mm lens. IBIS will work perfectly, _even_ when the focal length is set to 135mm. This should be quite obvious if you check the viewfinder at 100%. If you (at 100% magnification) see that image stabilization gets quite busy / shaky, when focal length is set to 135mm (using your 50mm lens), then you can tell that IBIS communication works properly.
How can I see what the Exposure is?
Do you mean the actual exposure (i.e. brightness?)? just the normal way, the camera metering still works.

@@soulopticc I tried two adapters, and neither would work without a firmware update. The update was not easy for me, as I am a Mac user :( I had to struggle with a Japanese language PC at work ....

Hi Richard. How would you rate this against the Techart TZM-02 adapter?
TZM-02 is an autofocus adaptor so if you want autofocus, TZM-02 is your choice. However if you don't need AF, i think this adaptor is cheaper choice
