In 2015, Scott Adams, the cartoonist behind the massively popular comic strip Dilbert, boldly predicted that Donald Trump would win the 2016 presidential election.
"The reason I can see it coming is because I have studied this field of persuasion," says Adams. "I saw this Trump character and he had the full tool set." The 60-year-old Bay Area resident doesn't agree with Trump on many political issues, but his prediction was enough for his to receive death threats from embittered Hillary Clinton supporters.
Adam's new book, Win Bigly: Persuasion in a World Where Facts Don't Matter, is both a detailed analysis of how Trump reframed political rhetoric during the 2016 campaign and a guide to how all of us can communicate more effectively and persuasively.
Adams sat down with Reason's Nick Gillespie in front of a live audience in San Francisco to talk about his book, his "extreme liberal" views, the popularity of his live broadcasts with followers via Twitter, and why Trump is a "master persuader."
Cameras by Zach Weismueller, Paul Detrick, and Justin Monticello. Edited by Ian Keyser.
The Irony how Trump’s election led me to the discovery of Scott Adams, win Bigly, and simultaneous sips!! The Golden Age, indeed.
What you didn't know about his boring Dilbert strip before last year.
Lol
It says everything about the Democrat party that Scott Adams realized that the reaction to being even MILDLY supportive of or associated with Trump meant his life was literally in danger, but not when he supported Hillary.
Spot on.
Now we know why Mark Cuban flipped to Hillary before the last election.
After the insurrection and the crowd shouting, "Hang Pence" and searching for Pelosi and AOC, I hope that you are ready to apologize.
his life was never in danger. want to see Scott Adams in danger - tell him to denounce Trump publicly. You piss ants can't get over the fact that the bum loser lost the election in a landslide.
@@DrJohnnyJ *Not gonna happen. But your tears are delicious. Please, may we have more? Cheers!*
Dostoyevsky understood people were not primarily "rational"..more than a 100 years ago.
Especially obvious in the case of obama.
@@xyhmo give it a rest bruh.
Scott explaining how he used persuasion to prevent Hiliary zombie voters from targeting him because they thought he was "literally" hitler's spokesperson by saying he will support HIlary is exactly like covering yourself with blood and intestines to fool zombies from attacking in The Walking Dead.
MK Reef haha! Great analogy!
He's literally Catbert
You got to do, what you got to do to survive.
MK Reef um
This technique in Dilbert lore is known as "The Way of the Weasel".
“If there are no surprises...” 😂😯😂
My idea for reparations: We're even now.
silveravnt They've got their money from welfare and additional money spent on education.
It's actually harmful. If you don't earn it yourself you don't appreciate it or use it properly. You see this with old rich family heirs and with the people who get free rides to gender studies.
How exactly did Trump DESERVE the comparison with Hitler? His platform on immigration was pretty moderate a few decades back. We're Democrats a few more decades back fascist for supporting American workers? There's no natural, organic aetiology to these accusations. Entirely manipulated.
I'm sick of this post-modernism crap
You did a fabulous job, Scott! Well done!
I'm a personality junkie: I believe the debate between the Right and left is: Rational vs Emotional. Whenever someone is emotional they make the wrong decision. It's not until you get passed the emotional stage (let those feelings out!) that you can make a decision. He is right most people are emotional. That's why most people are NOT IN CHARGE. Emotional people like staying comfortably , wallowing in the emotions and never getting to a solution, even if they say they want to get a solution. Ex: That Nail in Forehead Woman vs Man video.
I blame letting anyone into college. We can still have equal opportunity but think: Should Sally who likes to cook and talk about makeup be in the philosophy class?
Hey everyone Trump is saying "big league" not bigly...
sure dude, but that's a fact... and facts don't matter.
This is going to trigger a lot of anti-Trumpers
mjs0686 what doesn't?
That is pretty true.
Toby Henderson but... He isn't a homosexual lol, as if that matters?
I get you don't like abortion which is destroying a life. Which should have the right to exist.
That's very clever to compare Trump to a rabid paedophile. However, it ignores the fact that on December 21st 2017 Trump signed an executive order that declares a State of Emergency and specifically goes after human traffickers (and paedophiles), which has resulted in thousands of arrests and the confiscation of huge amounts of cash by the Treasury. Would a paedophile have signed that order? Seriously?
It's not hard to get triggered by someone when it's offensive how stupid they are.
Fascinating interview! It explains a lot. I really liked how Adam's explained how Trump overshoots what he's trying to sell. Like how he said he'd make Mexico pay for his stupid wall. He got everyone quibbling about Mexico and pretty much accepting that there would be a wall. Rather remarkable, really....
I'm glad Scott finally explained the "endorsements"! I was so confused at the time. It felt disingenuous and it turns out it was. I'm all for it so long as clarity is applied later; how he was treated was despicable.
I remember there was a story of a politician that discussed his plan and vision on what he could do for his state, and more widely for the nation. His secretary replied by saying something to the effect of "Everyone who is rational will see how your plan will be of great benefit to them and the country." The politician then replied "That's all well and good, but I need a majority to win the election."
This could be a "Dilbert does Politics" sketch!
A unique & welcome perspective
Great book, I really enjoyed reading it!
39:39 I sure hope that is true. It would be great to actually live in peace and harmony in the US with out the bat guano crazy marching in the street and over-reacting to everything.
wkdravenna too late. Looked good for awhile though...
My family was not even here for the period of slavery. Not my problem. Also, does the black community really want to operate in a society where the sins of the father are put upon on the son? That wont work out so well.
Trump has many of the qualities and performative testing elements of a stand-up comedian.
Turns out three years was all it took for something bad to happen! It was a silent, invisible enemy, aka SARS-CoV-2.
I was thinking that when he talked about inching our way to a golden age. 2020 was set to be fantastic - then we all got lockdowned with the sickness
@@ctastrophe Amongst other things!! 😢😢😓
@@MeanBeanComedy LoL what a diffeference even a month makes! Good lord, I am never saying "I don't see how things could possibly get worse" ever again in my life
Trump was a disaster from Day 1: N. Korea got nuclear capabilities, Iran enriched uranium and is months away from a bomb, California lost 1 million acres of burned timber - all federal land - because of Trump's blunders, he named one Russian agent to head our national security and another to run his campaign, he broke up NATO and attacked allies while cosying up to Putin. He cut taxes for the rich and companies while raising funding for failed military projects like the $2 trillion F35 and when he lost - he was down hugely in every poll - he lied about it and destroyed faith in our democracy. Oh, he also eliminated the office of pandemic preparedness and said the COVID was a mild flu that would disappear by Summer. What a selfish, incompetent ass. Scott! Up yours for supporting him.
At about 57:00 saying Pence is like a spare tire, that was the funniest people description I've heard in quite some time.
Donald Trump was a baseball player he wanted to be in the big leagues, after injury he became a builder and Manhattan was the big leagues of real estate. There is no bigly geeze.
The host is nuts if open borders is an option.
If there is no welfare, there is no need for borders. There is something morally wrong with saying "No, person who has done nothing aggressive towards me, you are not allowed to move to some empty plot of land that no man has improved, and if you try we're going to use aggression to force your compliance."
He immediately contradicted himself. You can come in, so long as you aren’t a fugitive or carrying super-AIDS. Well, how are you going to keep fugitives and super-AIDS patients out if you have a wide open border? Any immigration restriction HAS to come with border security or it’s unenforceable.
"Open Borders" has never meant no borders and free entry for criminals. Never. Gary Johnson was explicit about this during his campaign but all the emotional people insisted he meant something that he didn't.
Weak borders hurt the immigrant as well as the citizen. Open borders aren't as benevolent as it's marketed by libertarians. Not that the immigrants that the United States would be welcoming in with an open border would be inherently malevolent, but the resources aren't ready for such boom in national growth in population.
Self defense is not immoral. There are other cultures that, sometimes religiously, seek our cultural and physical destruction and enslavement.
The middle east was once Christian. Where are they now? In the ground or violently forced into submission. This issue is like the topic of the 2nd amendment. If we are free and have inalienable rights then we have the right to self defense.
An empty piece of land to develop you find everywhere.
This is part of the globalist, cultural marxist agenda. To deny us our right to sovereignty.
Even if you seek to take our sovereignty from us and serve the globalist agenda know that you will swim through an ocean of blood before you take away our right to a nation.
If you have no border you have no nation.
Imagine an America where Trump was able to focus fully on HIS JOB to make America great again.
when there's only two possible outcomes it's inevitable some people will be right
He predicted it much sooner.
Also, not true. Hypothetical: me and my gf both predicted we will sell our house within 1 month, but we didn’t. Nobody was right.
When he made that prediction, there were 25 candidates, even without compting the really minor no ever heard about
Couldn't disagree with him more on his position on abortion. When a woman becomes pregnant, one or more men are ALWAYS depended upon to provide resources to raise that child. It's NOT just the woman's womb in question. So men should have some choice in the matter.
14:10 That guy took giant sips of wine after the marriage topic LOL
It’s telling that the interviewer asked “how can we counter Trump” without any RATIONAL issue, just because he’s Trump
Not very reasonable, imo
Which shows Scott’s assertion that humans are not fundamentally rational
L I O N TED !
Amazing watching this in Oct 2020
Trump said ‘Big league’.
Great analysis or sage of Century.
For fake of respect for Office of Prez. I will always view Trump with disdain. Who next Waldo.
There is Dilbert ,Dogbert .and Catbert ,but since Trump was elected is he Donbert ?
Thanks Reason, the October 2015 interview is what led me to Scott's blogs.
Trump, this is what a press secretary should sound like. And what a President could sound like, too. I’ve felt we were heading for a golden age, too. In fact, Global Warming denier with empirical data, Novel Laureate in physics, Ivar Giaever: The Global Warming Hoax, and CO2 revisited, had talked about the book, The Rational Optimist. Also about how we’re already in the golden age, getting holder all the time. My Sargent Pepper twist to his theme. Going out today, getting book. Or ordering. To Scott Adams, and my Shakespearean simultaneous sip. ( Shakespeare’s illustrated cup) Most sips with a view! Thanks Scott!
Longest damn introduction help interview lives up to exception.
The abortion issue is about protecting the ones who cannot protect themselves. That's a human issue. Not a man or women issue.
Adams' podcast with Sam Harris is very good as well.
Adams kept talking about persuasion tools, and Sam Harris kept dragging it back to ethics. I interpreted the moment as Harris almost feeling offended that Scott wouldn't participate in a ethical discussion. One podcast, two different shows.
Two different shows, and I suspect two different interpretations depending if you're a fan of one or the other. I felt Sam's points were more relevant as to whether Trump should be president.
takerdust No, you can not fully evaluate the quality of another person without looking at ethics and actions. Scott is a trump apologist. Nothing more at this point.
Mataeus The Apostate "nothing more" sounds like the phrase of an irrational closed mind.
Adams was disgraceful on Sam Harris. He sees it as a virtue that facts don't matter. That is horrific. His conversation with Sam Harris was shameful, pathetic, and absurd. Adams is part of the problem and represents a scary cynicism. He refused to condemn Trump's disregard for truth. That is indefensible.
"I'm going to cut taxes BIG LEAGUE", not BIGLY.
Men get stuck with the bill for, 18 years on abortion
He was always saying Big League but -- oh, well. Bigly, then. Media!! can they/ we read? hear?
mlu ccc he made the title bigly because he knew you would focus on the mistake and therefore put more energy into it therefore remembering the name of his book. It was a persuasion technique.
where did he come up with DT having the worst approval ratings as a candidate? same pollsters that had HRC winning by a landslide?
31:30 “there’s only good versus good”
Though I strongly disagree with him on many aspects of Trump, and on some of his epistemic views (listen to his conversation with Sam Harris on the ‘Waking Up’ podcast, and you’ll probably be at a loss for words), he is very intelligent, and makes many good points. I was actually relieved to hear many of his political positions and ideas. For one thing, I agree with many of them, and for another it was a relief to find that he wasn’t actually pro-Trump, but those positions are less important to me than some of the points he has to make.
Probably most important, and most factual, of the points he makes are those concerning reason. He’s absolutely correct, both philosophically (as was pointed out by Hume in the 18th century) and scientifically, that people aren’t rational and/or driven by reason. Though emotions absolutely do “trump” reason, one should be careful to not completely doubt/deny our capacity for reason, especially if we’re aware of our cognitive biases, and/or critical thinkers. ✌🏼
I wonder what the interviewer feels about “open border” policies now?
Lmao right? What a dumbass
Enough people saw it coming because people voted for him
This didn't age well. Trump got his ass kicked in 2020. Some master persuader.
Holy shit it came true
That’s the best reparations solution I have heard, although it was funny that the moderator speculated this would result in a new demand for reparations after 4 years, considering the state of the University!
Sev King now that school is not worth ur time lets give it to blacks haha:)
Whack-a-doodle.
I HAD to upvote this, because the up-thumbs were stuck at 666!
morey ladini 😂😂😂😂👍👍👍👍
Did he predict him losing his ass in 2020?
Yes he did
I would have called Jeb "Prince Valium"
Predicting a golden age...beautiful; this fills me with hope....still, if it ain't a golden age at least it will be our last best stand!
What the fuck is up with the garlic in the background?
To me the.personal lives of these people have as much power as there success and or failures. They all have unusual talent they recognized in spite of those around them, what others thought of them ...isn't as heavey as to stop their success... it almost drives them more.
Same reparations, same choice views. I thought early on, not no child left behind, but smaller classes, 1 on 1 tutoring, college students, would volunteer time, get credit.
Audio seems to have some issues starting around 13 or 14 minutes in.
So many sad people seeking reassurances for their narrow-minded belief systems. So sad.
In the context of a Scott Adams interview, I find it hilarious that you think you are not narrow-minded. SAD!
Here is what I need clarity on:
If Trump is such a master of persuasion, then why did he not get a popular vote victory? Was Hilary Clinton MORE persuasive, but not just in the right geographies? Was Trump more persuasive with the people that MATTER? If yes, then why do the people that Clinton persuaded more matter LESS?
Hillary focused too much on dead people. They voted, but not in the numbers she needed.
@@sanniepstein4835 That is not a true statement.
I was referring to actual voters. More voters wanted Hillary Clinton to be president than voters who wanted Donald Trump to be president.
Same with Biden v. Trump. A lot more voters wanted Biden to be president to be Trump.
As it relates to persuasion and how great DJT is/was at it, then how can one explain his losing the popular vote twice?
@Randall Shughart Zero evidence of fraud. .
Love our President, the best one in the Modern History!
Ive been looking for a liberal to learn from without rolling my eyes in frustration and i think scott adams is that person. I dont agree with a lot of his politics, but i do find it refreshing to listen to a Democrat that speaks without emotional exaggeration. If the left wants people to take their ideas more seriously, this is how they should do.
Being liberal doesn't necessarily implies being a democrat.
Dude, stop with the leather jacket and the hair. I know you think it’s your schtick or brand, but I gotta tell you. No. Just no.
Weird how a lot of this came true.
Especially the 3 years of prosperity. The "golden age".
Painful.. I thought this was REASON TV. Scott having to try and explain Reason, and human perspective, and no one getting it.. ? sad and painful.
Yeesh guys, where is the objectivity? Scott's not perfect, he admits it.. He is far more reasonable than this interview, imo. Thoughts?
His views on abortion: he basically advocates for men to have ZERO birth control rights. If he or his own son were forced into 20 years of child support, I’d like to see if his opinion changed. MEN HAVE Z. E. R. O. REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS.
Scott is a social liberal, he still is. But his son died from fentanyl poisoning a couple years ago and said he’s voting for Trump in 2024 solely because of the border
I like Scott but I disagree with Reparations. If blacks couldn’t get ahead in the US, we wouldn’t have black presidents, actors,
doctors.. etc
Then Covid-19 happened!
Simple. Trump didn't win because he was good. Trump won because Hillary was poop. All you need to do is keep in mind how crappy Hillary is to know Trump is going to win.
"Golden age". Yeah...
Horrible job reading that introduction, dude. And the ringing microphone enhances the level of unprofessionalism.
I’d watch his interview with David Packman for a good rebuttal, and heated debate, over whether or not Trump has succeeded at holding up his “agenda”, particularly his campaign promises. Scott Adams amazes me, in that while I think he’s so spot on, and so insightful, in a variety of ways, but in many ways (particularly those concerning Trump) he’s just so grossly incorrect, seemingly unaware of the biases that he’s studied and talks about. Goddamn son... ✌🏼
I am so honored to be talking to the only person on the planet who has no political bias. Good grief, did you even listen to what he said?
Lol pakman is an idiot. Just an emotion baiter of prejudicial feelings with no studied substance behind his takes.
Scott Adams was all over the map with his predictions for the winner of the 2016 presidency. Cut the bamboozle.
Actually, it's all documented in his blog. Take a look.
I used to subscribe to Reason. The idea that a mind that advocates reason can support killing your own children & call it "reproductive rights" shows how juvenile the movement is. Indeed, the person I know most involved in libertarianism is a childless 40-something with a "girlfriend" who doesn't want kids - ie dysfunctional, damaged. Meanwhile, we social conservatives will keep the population going...as we import immigrants many of whom won't assimilate, thanks to others not having enough kids.
Scott has one shirt. See Ben Shapiro episode 25.
And why is You tube suggesting this year old vid to me now?
Im here from 2020, its... not exactly a 'golden age' right now. Lets hope 2021 is better.
Yeah but that's not really the fault of anyone but China... Even though people said there would be a Pandemic, nobody knew when exactly it would happen. We really were in the best golden age the country has ever seen before this.
It is no better under Biden. Much worse. Biden supposedly getting involved in Ukraine yet he has no idea what he is saying and can not talk properly. Might as well put up figurine of Wally. Way more inspiring
BIG LEAGUE!!!!
What a sociopath wannabe...
"humans are not rational" - the cornerstone statement to start the narrative and base other things on it
interviewer - what is the evidence to support this thesis?
SA: carries on with empty blurb with NO evidence quoted to support the cornerstone thesis
the guy is a con man and why is the audience laughing without calling him out on what he 's saying with NO factual basis?
The end do not justify the means. This guy might understand influence but his politics are appalling.
Scott said that everybody does a cost-benefit analysis and the rest is just sophistry. Do you know what sophistry is?
I too get You and Trump...lol funny as you are. I think its important, when outstanding people stand out and why. I agree why he is successful..as an intelligent master strategist.. but with faults that no one saw him.as a PRESIDENT of this Country at all. I have followed his carrier and read all his books watched his show. Also, some others like EkonMusk, Oprah, Tesla, Vincent Peele Billy Graham. Einstein, etc. What makes people successful? What, where, why, how if they do become so, How do they end up or fall. Why? Thanks for your take.

Scott Adams has been hypnotized by Trump.
.. Which makes Trump truly a Master Persuader !
2:00 logic and rationality presuppose some kind of context/ background in which there's a kind of record, such that reference to it matters… The prevailing media environment has no affordances for this kind of social memory
3:05 3:10 Scott articulates the milieu of office culture, lampooning its absurdities like a court gesture
3:59 data point to illustrate his contrarian ism
4:40 4:42 abortion
5:00 proposing a new decision making logic

The only time i watch a video longer than 10 minutes is when its really really good. This video is not even good.
Scott Adams is Q, pass it on.
Is there anyone that can explain why anyone enjoys Dilbert that comic is the antithesis of funny.
It is okay to admit you are not smart enough to get those jokes that went over your head.
It's funny if you've worked in an office. They are basically inside jokes. You're not stupid if you don't get them, just blue.

What is there to get? The punchline to almost every strip is the same, that corporate bureaucracy involves a lot of arbitrary policies and directives from middle managers that can make life tedious for the people who work in one.
mezzaninex You'll have to point to one specifically that you don't think is funny (but others do) if you want an answer to that.
Come on Scott stop skirting around the issue and admit that you love this anti-democratic President Trump. Be a man and admit it. What an irritating interview. Go home and shave.
@Randall Shughart Amazzzzing !! “Fascinating”, as Spock would say.
Scott gives advice on abortion or family matters but never had babies or a family of his own.. hmmm
he spent around a decade raising a stepchild with his ex. He also doesn't give advice on abortion. He says women should come together for the abortion decisions (conservative and liberal), and men should step aside so the final decision can look credible from the 2 political sides.
Ann Coulter also predicted it in 2015-- czcams.com/video/g0fA7inVhTs/video.html

My level of respect for Scott Adams went way way down. He has a sickening slavish appreciation for Trump's ability to lie. He sees it as a virtue that facts don't matter. That is horrific. His conversation with Sam Harris was shameful, pathetic, and absurd. Adams is part of the problem and represents a scary cynicism.
He doesn't see it as a virtue that facts don't matter, he simply points out that (for persuasion) they don't. It's a fact. And seeing how it didn't persuade you just proves that point.
Triggered ... you obviously didn’t watch the video.
absolutely wrong - you are typical of the impervious ideology liberal - there is nothing he said that he didn't back up with examples - it is so sad when a silly old bugger can't see another perspective.
My thoughts exactly, along with half of the actual audience that was there... some of the questions they asked.... I'm thinking... did you even LISTEN to what he just said? FACTS vs FEELINGS will get them every time. Seriously people... calm down and go back and LISTEN to what Scott is saying... he is spot on.
People pay no mind to the CZcamsr who thinks using a minor film character in a classic movie's name/pic as his handle is clever. His politics are equally hollow.

Anyone who wants to see Scott’s bullshit laid bare should listen to the episode of Sam Harris’ podcast where Adams appeared.
Pay special attention to the moment when Sam Harris sputters and gets so worked up he goes full "Trump is Hitler," and Adams declares victory. A loss for Sanctimonious Sam.
