  • I'm cutting an interesting striped specimen from my newly acquired 7 ton rock & precious stone collection. A collection that includes entire gem shop inventories as well as the contents of other large private collections.
I think this is petrified wood, but I'm new to cutting and working with rock and minerals. Help me out if you see/hear me get something wrong. I'm very much still learning.
I recently started a small business cutting and selling rock, among other things. Check out Bid2WinAuctions.com where you can bid on some of the rocks and slabs you see cut here. Next auction will go up soon. You can also email me at greg@bid2winauctions.com to inquire about purchasing things seen here.

Pretty sure it's jasperized, agatized wood! Very beautiful❤

Nice quiet saw! Looks like wood to me.

Banded Jasper. The banding is too wide for dessert wood. The rings on trees there would be tightly together.

I agree the bands seem too wide to be wood, but the apparent pith and circular bands make me come back to thinking wood. I'm trying to think of a formation process that would create the concentric circles. Is that found often without wood present?

Thanks for the comment! I'm coming around to the thought that it's jasper... Interesting formation to be sure.

It sort of looks like wood, ive seen some that looks similar to that in utah and arizona, but the growth rings look too big. it could just be a piece of brecciated/flow banded jasper. I just dont see any medular rays or any grain preservation besides the big rings. Its an awesome piece whatever it is!!

To me it looks like a piece of jasper. The annual growth rings are too wide, typically wood compresses during the time and you barely can see them. I will drop a link with the photo of petrified wood from my location just as example. Again grate video and glad you back. This big peace looks amazing from the corner view as you can see both sides of the rock and pattern is very beautiful, I would keep it like this, polish it and keep it as a cabinet size rock in collection.

The width of the rings and gaps between them is what has kept me questioning if its wood or not, too. I think it might have been submerged or buried and rotting which created space between the rings where the agate filled. The circular pattern being so tree like has me giving the preponderance of the evidence to wood, but I don't really know.

Looks like wood to me! It looks like it could have been a tree that had great growing condition! I have a piece of wood that is the same colour in my collection!
