P. I. Tchaikovsky: Prince Gremin's aria (Sava Vemic with english subtitles)

- Since we can not sing it, we can at least speak about the OPERA in these isolation days. Through Stanislavsky’s 5 question (WHO, WHERE, WHEN, WHY and HOW) I will try to explain this aria.
Opera: Eugene Onegin by P. I. Tchaikovsky, Act III, scene 1
1. WHO is the character?
Prince Gremin, a rich nobleman, in his 40s or 50s who has been wounded in the war in the past.
2. WHERE is the scene happening?
In St. Petersburg, in the luxurious ballroom in the home of Prince Gremin. Glittering reception of the guests.
3. WHEN is the time of action?
Evening, time for ball. After having spent 5 years in aimless traveling outside of Russia Eugene Onegin has just seen Tatiana again, now elegant and gracious lady of society and asks his host Prince Gremin about her.
4. WHY is Gremin telling all this to Onegin?
Firstly, while Onegin has asked him. Secondly, Gremin is indeed in love in Tatiana and in his home he can talk as much as he is inspired. Thirdly, Gremin maybe knows that Onegin and Tatiana had have something in the past, but I am playing it as I don’t know anything about it, since I think the shock for Onegin is then bigger and stronger. What did he miss in Tatiana...
5. HOW is Gremin telling this to Onegin?
Sincere, dignified, proud and with eloquence. He is truly in love with Tatiana and he doesn’t hide it. - Hudba

Hello, dear Sava, you are very gifted with this voice you've got - is an big present you was born with! Of course, this aria is an true masterpiece sung by many all over the world but still you made it fantastically impressive to me!
I 've had a pleasure to know your country when it was still old Yugoslavia. I used to perform at Dubrovnik Summer Festival and met great conductors (like Anton Nanut or Lovro Matačić) and great voices. I don't speak Russian so I'm unable to comment your pronunciation; but your diction is very clear. As for your performance, one word synthesizes it all: loveable!!! One can easily understand Tatiana's choice: Gremin is a true gentleman here. You sing it with such an ease, and your voice serves very well the interpretation. Thank you for this beautiful rendition!

a Serbian guy sung in a perfect Russian. Unbelieveable! I must lern a Russian from his singing, yet I've learned Russian from I was born. I just can't believe you comprehend and sing Russian far more precise and heartly than Russians do! Adorable Russian. Unexpectedly surprised. Plus a big voice that helped to translate it. Your Onegin must certainly be studiedin Russian schools!
Thank you Alex, though believe me my Russian is not that perfect, though working with Russian coaches helped me a lot and coming from Serbia it’s easier for me to read Russian Cyrillic. Enjoy singing and studying the words and you will be all good!

I am currently rehearsing this wonderful aria and it's going well I would say. Your performance was really good and it was lovely to hear. Do you have any tips or tricks for making my interpretation of the aria just as beautiful as yours?

Hello Peter, firstly thank you on your comment that I’ve just seen now and here is a feedback (sorry for not seeing it before, I obviously don’t check my channel often): Regarding the Interpretation the “secret” is in the very text of the aria, Gremin’s words that Tchaikovsky obviously understood so well and then enriched them with great melodic lines. So the words and the text (that we need to understand and translate well) help you to connect with the character (Gremin here) when practicing/repeating the aria over and over again. While singing “Legato” the melody, think about the words and it’s meaning and that connection helps a lot. Cheers to you in Sweden, from Munich!
