  • If there's one proven method to catching monster fish, it's to get a big bait and throw it under a dock.

True. I often went fishing with my dad before going to university. He and his fishing buddies would gather almost every weekend and I tagged along quite often - catching fish, sowing me how to tie hooks, how to use a fishing rod and etc. It was fun and they sometimes also brought their families with them. I would at some point give up the fishing and go play with the kids, get yelled a bit for splashing in the lake and scaring the fish... Good times. I also never learned how to use a fishing rod properly - after the 10th time I hooked someone's shirt or some plant, dad decided to let me stick to the pole where there was no reel. I am pretty good using it but the downside is that I am limited in the range a 5 meter pole allows me.

Hey everyone! Thanks for watching. To be absolutely clear, sharks do not normally attack people under most conditions. They might, however, investigate (usually by taking a bite) if you make yourself seem like a more common food source. You can do that by swimming at night, dawn or dusk, swimming near running bait or distressed fish, or by swimming in areas where fish are frequently caught, cleaned, and discarded... like a dock.
So remember, sharks aren't after you but they *are* wild animals and it's on *us, the humans,* to avoid potentially dangerous behaviors that might cause sharks to mistake us for their preferred food sources.
Sharks are incredibly important parts of the ecosystem and deserve our respect and protection.

I live on the Gulf of Mexico in Florida and you can fish in the Gulf or in the bay, which is also known as the “sound side”. Well, that’s where a lot of people swim- the sound side. However, if you ever looked at an aerial view of the docks on the sound side, you’d see hundreds of sharks swimming underneath the masses of people as they’re jumping off the docks. The only time people get bit is in the pass, which is the narrow section water that’s connecting the bay and the gulf. There you will see thousands of sharks such as Tiger, Bull, Lemon, Hammerheads, black tips and Makos. It’s very unwise to swim in the pass… it’s common to see bull sharks in the bay especially around docks.

Thats sharks, they have much more politeness than people. Animals know people are trouble and rarely bother them.
Why I don't swim in the ocean is because we are by a strait where a mysterious neurological disease is going through the population that the governmnet denies exists. Shit, I can't believe I'm writing that becaues it sounds so conspiratorial, but its literally true, just look up New Brunswick Canada.
Its LIKELY from contaminated shellfish, but since its a big industry they don't like to talk about it. Meanwhile, the most popular bay in the region is almost completely enclosed but for a narrow strip of water, and around the bay is completely developed so all the municipal waste and agricultureal runoff runs right into the bay.
About half the year its closed to swimming because of bacteria counts, but you are LITERALLY swimming in what is a wastewater lagoon. In a nearby city when the river gets low the blue green algae count is SO high that dogs die just from going in the water.
Sharks don't scare me at all.

A loooooooong time ago, my dad and I spotted two gents fishing off a municipal pier on a southern NJ border island, and they were catching sharks - sand sharks. They kept them for the meat. I just wanted to catch one to catch one, so dad and I went out late one night and, armed with the hints the two guys had given us, started fishing. Dad was sleepy and went to the car to nap, and of course that's when the fish hit my line. It took me awhile to reel it in, but it also took me awhile to wake up my dad in the car while I was doing it. Dad had a gaff hook in hand when the fish got up near the pier, but it was a good four or five feet down to the water. We didn't know what to do. In the past, when we'd used the gaff on our boat, dad only ever put it in the fish's mouth to avoid killing it, so he tried that. It knocked the hook out of the sharks' mouth and the fish was gone in an instant. We figured it was about 5' long, and that the best possible outcome had happened - got to catch the fish, no harm, didn't 'have to haul it way up out of the water, etc. I guess we could have cut the line, but honestly it was so long ago - like 40 years - I don't remember if we even had a pocketknife with us. A bit ill-prepared. Pretty cool experience in the very creepy darkness of the municipal pier....

By nightfall we took the spotlights on the tugs that were with us and shine the water. You knew when to change bait when the sharks would swoop in on the edge of the light .

I was around 14 at the time .I can't remember the exact location either Clearwater or fort Lauderdale not sure. But one day we hired some rods and spent the day fishing on a pier.. We caught a few small crazy looking fish but the highlight was 14 year old me hooking a small shark or dog fish as one guy called it. It was around the 2ft Mark and somewhere between 15 and 20lb what a buzz and unbelievably for such a big fish the pelicans still wanted to eat it!!! Great memories 👍

I was down at the Bitter End Yatch club in the British Virgin Islands a number of years ago, we chummed the water for about 10mins, tossed a giant hook in the water with a fish head on it and 2 of us (there were 4 others with us) pulled in an eight foot shark by hand. It took us around an hour to get it up to the dock.
One of my most memorable experiences.
Funny thing is, the next day we went kite surfing off Richard Branson’s beach next door, right in the channel where all the sharks were.
Reality is, if you’re in the ocean, they’re under you. Most of the time they just leave you alone.
I’ve been surfing, kite surfing, scuba diving etc all my life and never had an experience where I generally feared for my life.

I was enjoying my time. I heard someone blowing a whistle like crazy. As I was bobbing in the swells, I looked toward shore & saw the Life-Guard waving his arms like a mad man. I thought, WTF, go help whomever needs the help, don't just make noise. Anyway, I made my way north then ultimately came ashore, walking back toward my condo. When I got to the area where the Life-Guard was he started yelling at me. "There are sharks out there, blah, blah, blah." I replied, Well, No Shit Sherlock. It's the Fucking ocean !!!! That said, I don't just go into the ocean anymore unless I am on a scuba trip with other folks.

Good idea, just be in shape, get good instruction, and some local knowledge, even if you are an experienced diver or spearfisherman. Most anglers are too cowardly to take hooks out of sharks so they cut the line. Your a champion angler for doing the right thing & removing the hook :) As they get bigger bringing them to shallows makes it easier because they calm down. I'm not recommending this in case you loose a hand but you can roll sharks upside down & they go quiet for a short time. They seem to like a gentle rub on the belly.
