Wayfarers is great. Probably my number 1, but I need to go back and look at my full list. Have played it at 1,2,4. It's fine at 4, took us a little over 2 hours with teaching. At 2 it's a 1 hour game. So roughly 30 mins per player. Plus if you're good you can zoom through the journal tracks and end the game sooner. I found it to be on the lighter side compared to the whole west kingdom series.

Thanks for the heads up on Rear Window! I don't stop to look at "IP games" for one second, so completely ignored this one. My family loves deduction games (enjoyed Awkward Guests a lot this year), and this looks right up our alley!

Prospero Hall is an interesting designer, their Jaws game is fun and one of the few things I can play with gamer friends, my son and nieces and even my nongaming mum and dad. Everyone has fun and kids love getting to play a man eating shark and gang up on everyone. It's a game of 2 halves, the first a hidden movement hunt and the second a tense fight on a disintegrating boat.
I love Mysterium and the film Rear Window so I need to try that.

We love Ark Nova! My wife & I were very happy when you presented the Fire & Ice award for it. We're fairly new to the hobby and we have enjoyed your videos and presenting so many quality games that we've enjoyed this past year including Cascadia, Sunset over Water, Indian Summer, Agricola, Castles of Burgundy, Dune Imperium, Guild of Merchant Explorers, and Under Falling Skies. We're Star Trek fans and have enjoyed Star Trek: Five-year Mission. We are looking forward to Trailblazer - The John Muir Trail coming soon in early 2023. Again, we love your videos and looking forward to the coming year!

Great to see you discovering COIN. I came to the hobby playing Euros, but have always been interested in history, then a few years ago I found Cuba Libre and yeah..... went down that rabbit hole!
What is really nice is seeing some convergence of euro/strategy and history/wargames in recent years, borrowing of mechanisms or stories to make some really great games (I'm thinking Pax Pamir, Watergate, Undaunted etc.).

  • @Izathel1

I wanted to use the word "approachable" in my comment, but couldn't figure out if it's you guys (your personalities or interest in the hobby) or how your explanations make the games seem easy to dive right into. Endless Winter
    Zapotec
    Foundations of Rome
    Flamecraft
    Planted
    Guild of Merchant Explorers
    First Empires
    Dog Park
    Honorable Mentions:
Azul: Master Chocolatier (This was actually the first edition of Azul I've ever played.)
Messina 1347 (Technically a 2021 release, but it was hard to get in the U.S. until this year, otherwise it would have been top 10 for sure, probably top 5.)

Oracle of Delphi is one of my favorite games! One pet peeve of mine, TMG is only a distribution partner for North America. Hall Games is the true publisher/developer. And they deserve all the credit because they are a great publisher and should be featured more than TMG. A similar situation is also A Feast For Odin and Ark Nova. Publisher is Feurland but Z man and Capstone distribute in North America.

Best game this year for me I only got two weeks ago but I have played some 8 times now and that is Undaunted: Stalingrad. It is a campaign version of Undaunted and it is incredible. The last two scenarios that my friend and I played were the most emotion I have ever felt in a board game before, and I play a lot of them. The theme, the story, the choices, the mechanics, everything work so well in that game.100% would recommend, especially if you already like games like Memoir '44 or Undaunted.

Wayfarers has quickly become one of my favorite games! Yes, this is a first of a trilogy with Scholars (April 2023) and Inventors (2024) being the next two. Ready, Set, Bet was a hit with our family this year. The app is nice but I personally enjoyed calling the races. Turing Machine is a work of genius. Fantastic logic teacher! I described Anno 1800 as "techtree the game". Lol, I loved Ark Nova as well, nice. I've been curious about the Marauder Expansion. Excellent list!

Aqualin is quick and fun, I agree. I have Shipwreck Arcana, but haven't tabled it yet. Picked up The Guild of Merchant Explorers a week ago and have played it seven times (twice at four players and the rest solo). Have played two of the four maps. (And yes, those are villages that you are building in the game.) Have you played Matthew Dunstan's print and play game, Voyages? Wonderland's War takes a bit of time to set up and has some fiddly rules, but it is lots of fun. Keeps everyone engaged!
Thinking about picking up Turing Machine because I heard they release a daily puzzle.

My tastes have been consistently complexifying! Here's my top 10 discoveries of 2022:
    10. Smartphone Inc.
    9. Whistle Mountain
    8. Corrosion
    7. Golem
    6. Ark Nova
    5. Skymines (the only 2022 game in my top 10)
    4. Gaia Project
    3. Crystal Palace
    2. The Gallerist
    1. Underwater Cities (I'm now a big Vladimír Suchý fan!)
All those are such great games.
Didn't play a lot of 2022 games, but some of them, like CARNEGIE and DICE THEME PARK, I liked a lot! I can see them being replayed again soon! VERDANT has completely replaced CASCADIA for me (which I was never a huge fan of), so that's another win.
A bunch of them I thought would have been good, but they had one thing I didn't like.
    - DOM PIERRE was a great wine-themed game, but bad luck in the market can make you waste several of your precious turns if you don't have the opportunity to refresh it.
    - GALENUS had some neat mechanics-including the genius idea of tiebreaker tokens!-but it had so much player interaction that the competition for certain areas could be pretty vicious.
    - MERCHANTS OF THE DARK ROAD was great thematically, but the strictness of the rondel meant that sometimes you were limited to doing something you didn't want to do, and also, the winner of our game won by following other people's adventures, and so when we saw it was better to follow them than start our own, no one wanted to start any and it became a big game of chicken.
    - READY SET BET is well designed, but I don't like loud, riotous games, so I didn't enjoy it at all.
    - SWATCH was cute and light, but the cards made for huge point swings based solely on luck (some gave you one colour cube, others gave you 6).
    - VEILED FATE was interesting for a social deduction game, but that isn't my favourite genre, nor is fantasy my favourite theme. I'd probably pick it if that type of game was suggested, though.
I had a bad experience playing VIVID MEMORIES but I want to try it again because I think I could like it if I had a better experience. YAK was good for a light, family-weight game.
And that's all the 2022 games I played! Overall I played 162 different games, 89 of which were new, so I consider that a successful year! 🙂
As always, thanks for a great video, Monique and Naveen! Have a lovely 2023!

I really want to like Ready Set Bet! However, when I brought it to the table, it just went flat. The players voted early and then just sat there as I rolled the dice to see who won. We did two rounds and then just called it. I still think that it should be fun, but that one experience was not so good. Cuba Libre is a great game. One game that I would also recommend is Washington's War--good two person game, and less crunchy.

HNY!!! My favorite game this year was Revive. Wish it had been distributed better. I’d imagine it’ll get a lot more buzz in the next few months.

Carnegie has a solo mode on BGA but I don’t love how the automa is implemented, and that’s the only way I’ve played it so far so I’m hoping to get to play it at different play counts in future to change my mind. I got quite burned out by losing on repeat and feeling like I didn’t have enough actions to bother getting many new departments.
Recency bias or no, boop is amazing. Everyone I’ve shown it to has loved it so far. Btw your boop link to playthrough appeared at the wrong time (earlier than I think it was intended).
I have Turing machine and ark nova still in shrink and waiting for the right day 🤞

Forgive me, I can't remember from you top games list of all time if any of the GIPF series appeared on there, but if not with Aqualin, Boop, Shobu being mentioned I bet you would dig some of the GIPF series. DVONN is my favorite of the batch. I think most people prefer YINSH the most. Most of the series is a hit. Check em out if you haven't.

Very interesting. I always find your "top" videos very good and interesting. After watching one of your playthroughs of Ark Nova several months ago, i thought maybe it would be your number one for the year (never played it nor do i have anything to do with the game whatsoever, it's not a disappointment, it's not that, just a bit of a surprise). But i really enjoy when you do this kind of videos almost as much as the playthroughs. Anyway, wish you a Happy New Year for you and yours!

    • @BeforeYouPlay
      @BeforeYouPlay  Před rokem +2

Actually, you were right - Ark Nova is both of our #1's of the year! These 10 are just our top 10 besides Ark Nova lol. We briefly mentioned it in the beginning of the video since we had already talked about Ark Nova during the Fire and Ice Awards. Sorry for the confusion, and thank you so much for your kind words! Happy New Year to you and yours!

Just tried Turing Machine this week and enjoyed it very much! However, the machine (solo) was really hard to beat so there was a luck of guessing there, but as you guys said, the journey itself was fun :D Anno 1800 and Carnegie, both of them are amazing!
The Shipwreck Arcana and Campaign Trail seems very interesting. I highly recommend Woodcraft (probably the best game I've played in the last quarter of this year) and Lacrimosa XD Both are very thematic euros

I bought Anno 1800 for solo play (official solo variants have been published) but as Naveen mentioned there aren’t actual resources in the game and that produced this effect, for me at least, of the feeling of just placing cubes on locations with no thematic feel at all. I bet the multiplayer is good, however, because so many reviewers, from Zee Garcia to Alex at BoardGameCo to Naveen, say as much. Still, I do NOT recommend it for solo play.
