  • Sometimes when I am looking for furniture to flip I find something so nasty that I have to buy it.
    This cedar chest is one of those pieces. Under all the dirt and grime I could tell it had good bones so a perfect piece for me.

    I really enjoyed this video. Thank you. I never realized that cedar had so many knots in it. I have a cedar blanket chest about 2/3rds the size of that one. It came with from Germany with my 4 great Grandparents. It has no finish on it except oil. It was built before 1801, because that's when they fled to Canada, and it still smells like cedar inside. It is one of my favorite treasures. It must have been built from a much bigger tree, because it doesn't have knots like that one. Thank you for sharing this. I hope it finds a good home.💜

      Wow that is incredible to think all the history in that time and still being in the family after so long too. Thank you so much for sharing that. Good to know the cedar smell lasts for at least 220 years!

      @@RIA She was an amazing woman, She had it filled with all of her tools for handcrafts and a recipe box which I also have. She sheared sheep, washed the wool, carded the wool, spun the wool and knitted underwear and socks for everyone. She passed her skills down to her children and grandchildren. My Grandma was the last one to help with the sheep, but we all still knit and crochet and embroider and sew. Unfortunately, I am the last of my line to care about such things. I have no daughters or grandchildren. I don't know what will happen to it when I'm gone...

      Thank you for sharing this, very moving. To think how in those years that chest as been in your family how very different life have been. I love history staggering to think in just a few generations all that self sufficiency has changed.

    Your Ceder chest is homemade, a primitive beauty. You can refresh the inside wood by giving it an application of Ceder oil from Amazon. Applying Haree's furniture oil on the outside will also help.

    Thank you for a great video! I like that you show the most important part of the process…just enough for us to learn without all that extra footage of you stripping and sanding! We know you pu5 hours of work into this to make it turn out beautiful!

    • @RIA
      @RIA  Před rokem +2

      Glad you liked it and the edit. I think i filmed about 2 hours of footage for this project but I don't film everything. I like the videos to be straight to it and move quickly. If Alex falls asleep putting a 5 minute sanding montage together its probably not worth watching.

    Girl!!! I saw your expression!! LOL. You did a Great job of not expressing your feelings about how dirty it really was!!!! This cedar chest-you brought it back to Life!!! Ha ha well what can I say it was bad but the inside was surprisingly clean. That cedar really works for keeping bugs and such away not sure how many years it was stored in a carport but im thinking 20 or 30+ its far from the worst starting piece I've done but it was bad.

    This I find useful since I have a cedar chest whole both on the interior and exterior. Could I do an Odie"s Oil finish on it without too much color change?? Thank you.

    • @RIA
      @RIA  Před rokem

      You should be fine to use Odie's oil on cedar there will be a slight color change it wont be that significant. If you were do it on a really light wood pine hickory you see quite a change.
