This is epic I wish Sony made these public online somewhere high quality it’s a part of gaming history also jak is the first game I ever played I was 5 awesome times hooked me in that and ratchet and clank
Sony was absolutely Invincible here , they knew content was king and they overwhelmed you with It , freely took all the risk In the world dropping known to niche classics every single month , back when most new games were treated equally and given the same chance by far more open-minded consumers. More Importantly this Is the last era when Sony still retained the pride of their quirky creative Japanese roots Instead of changing to adapt and chase the American market , Japanese trends and devs equally led the way making PS2 content the most diverse library In gaming history. Sony still had that same aggressive mentality that drove PS1's success , especially during the 2001 holiday which Is still one of the greatest times In videogame history with DC , PS1 , PS2 , N64 , GC , Xbox all available on shelves at the same time!. 1997 - 2007 may be peak of the entire Industry.
You can thank Ken Kutaragi for all of that. He was really the last true stomp down muthafucka in the business. When he was fired by then President/CEO Sir Howard Stringer in 2007 (internal politics, more people within Sony wanted Kutaragi as the big homie), that was when it all fell apart and they were never quite the same again. He was like a father to especially Japanese 3rd parties. Kutaragi on record has stated that he only had plans for PS1, PS2, and PS3. Not PS4. So a successor was always planned by the 8th generation. It was that he was dismissed much earlier than planned. Sony was very lucky to have selected Kazuo Hirai as he was very close to Kutaragi and had that same stomp down spirit. It would be very bold but Sony next year can make it all right and put Ken Kutaragi's son (who who last publicly was known to be at Bandai Namco as part of the Tekken team) as the next head of PlayStation.
I was at this press conference. One of my sisters designed the set for it. I actually set up all the PS2 kiosks (I think 8 of them on each side) at this press conference, because the workers there were having trouble. My sister recommended me for it, and I did it super quickly, so they dubbed me the "cable wizard". Then I got free tickets to E3 itself.
@@MrNis750 Unfortunately, no. I didn't get anything like that. I just got tickets to E3 for helping out with the press conference, which was considered part of the E3 umbrella but not the actual exhibition. And at E3 all you really get to do is wander around and play games and game demos, or watch demo videos. There are a few talks you can attend, but not very many are open to people without special passes. There might have been something somewhere letting you win a game or get some other prize, but I didn't see anything. I played some Devil May Cry, Final Fantasy X, SOCOM, Star Fox Adventures, and a lot of Smash Bros Melee. Probably a few other games.
Sony still had a lot of trust into the Tomb Raider brand in 2001... Only for them to come up with Uncharted for the PS3. Interesting presentation, thank you for uploading this!
It was so funny to hear him talk highly of PlayStation and Resident Evil when it was the GameCube that later got what's regarded as the best RE games, with PS2 only getting a downgraded RE4 port.
Wow. This is historical gold. 2001 was such a pivotal year In the gaming Industry. So many great franchises were born on all platforms that year. Halo, DMC, JAK, PGR, Max Payne etc. Funny enough the arguably most impactful game of the decade had a relatively small presence: GTA 3. Apparently GTA 3 didn’t seem too special or interesting when demos and trailers were shown. When it came out though? Blew everyone’s minds. Hope Sony’s 2000 and 2002 press conferences show up in the wild eventually!
Lol Broadband was barely a thing let alone streaming. This is a show for the press and investors.primarily the latter as could be cleared by the content of the presentation
Lmao 2001? Streaming? Iirc kazaa or limewire was the way to torrent during this time and one measly 3-5mb song would take hours if not days on net zero/AOL dial up. God help me...those were very dark and scary times.
PlayStation dropped tons of bangers that year. 💪🏻

Devil May Cry was the most badass game I've ever seen back then. Still play it to this day, none of the sequels came close to being better.
agreed
Bullcrap. 3 is easily the best one.
@@HBarnill 3 has the best story, but 5 has the best gameplay for me. All in all, I do prefer 3 over 5 but only slightly.
Man thanks I love watching old e3 or gaming shows.
Same
Andrew House former President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment looks so different then he did later years late 2000s and early 2010s.

Quite amazing! Thank you for sharing your history with E3 2001, really adds to this historic footage.

Back in the day when we got actual good games that were done and you got the entire package.

It was recorded and the uploaded with a vcr to usb I believe 😂
Kid, internet wasn't the huge thing it is now.
who would have thought that the first ever final fantasy movie that they make was a big pile of dog shit and was terrible and no one saw it
Got it bundled with my PS2 back then. Nostalgic for sure.
I actually kinda enjoyed it, but damn was it a rude awakening for Square and Sony when it bombed at the box office.
No Metal Gear was not born on PlayStation. It was born on MSX 10 years before it comes to PlayStation.
First Metal Gear was PS1 exclusive
@@RobertK1993 the first Metal Gear was on MSX in 1986 only in Japan and Metal Gear 2 was on MSX in 1990 only in Japan.
@@mrmlpvideogerman I believe it launched in 1996 the first 1

Metal Gear Solid. Completely new paradigm shift for the IP at the time. A half truth but still its marketing at the end of the day.
