Parasite Eve is a genre mix of horror and JRPG from Square, released on the PlayStation in 1998. This is a retrospective review of an unusual classic PS1 game. Follow Aya in her pursuit of Eve and her desire to create the ultimate being.
I'm explaining the entire story including the true ending, the gameplay, the history and if it still holds up today.

Parasite Eve is a game with details like you think the Worms being out of nowhere was odd, well, in the zoo, there is a file in a place describing animals of the jungle and one talks about earthworms and how they grow in size. Not sure why there would be one for Earthworms but it's there so you do get a warning.
Also every time you leave Wayne and Torres, you get some banther between the two during their short stint together in the game. Speaking of which you can get the monster (a slightly bigger Dog/Werewolf NMC) who killed Torres providing you don't go a certain room first (the one with the doctor I think) and you get a better gun and a pile of decent treasure.
You recall what you said about PE being very specific about certain pixel perfect, well, there is alot of hidden stuff like that, a hidden gun in the place where you get the park key by moving a stretcher out of the way for example.
Parasite Eve and Tekken 3 were my first games I bought for my PSX so I am okay in that collector sense. PE is probably my favorite PS1 game of all time due to it's brevity and it's still unique combat system. Albeit still need to beat the Chrysler Building, someday, hopefully, it and it's sequel get a remaster, PE2 is low key underrated as it's more Survival Action and it's Parasite powers are versatile and powerful compared to the few options PE1 gives you. I am glad you had a good time with the game despite it's slapdash nature.
Got this game when it originally came out in 98 when I was 11. Didn't beat the Chrysler building until 12 years later when I was 23. That same year I also revisited FFVII and beat Emerald and Ruby weapon. It was basically the year of me taking revenge on things in games I couldn't beat as a child. Felt good. This video brought back some good memories.

That's because SE and the books author had a dispute leading SE to lose the license, so there won't be anything new unless they sort it out...but that won't happen.
@@scuff4094nd I bet 3rd Birthday was a massive contributor to that fallout, cause that game is a stain not just on the IP Parasite Eve but a stain on all of humanity’s collective culture as well. Unfortunately that all means there won’t ever be a HD re-release of it due to that falling out.
Though if they can’t use Parasite Eve anymore, they should make something like a spiritual successor to Parasite Eve with a modernized version of the the combat(like how Square modernized FFVII’s combat in FFVII Remake. Not that it should play like FFVIIR but modernize Parasite Eve’s combat) still set in our modern world(maybe even keep it set in the ‘90’s to retain the vibe of the original), just with a different premise narratively.

It's a shame this game had its license problems with the books author after PE2 when he disavowed anymore adaptations of his work.
It didn't help when square made PE1 without the authors knowledge and authority until it was near completion which would make their relationship Rocky from the start.
That's why there hasn't and Won't be any new PE.
Also The 3rd birthday is NOT a reference to ultimate being it actually references Ayas 3rd "appearance".
To add the 3rd birthday isn't really a sequel it's more of a non cannon spin-off.
Not only does this game NOT have the title but, there's also No reference to source material (mitochondria etc)
Great game. Concept art is an excellent example of body horror.
I was never able to play this as I couldn't find a copy but PE2 is one of my all time favorite games. Thanks for making this, was great to see what I've missed. I'd love to see you cover PE2 one day.
You wonder if something happens if you don't get off the hospital roof in time and the answer is "Yes". There's a CGI scene of the jet crashing into it and Aya being blasted off the roof. It is a game over (and you have to fight the boss again).

I once read how Chrysler has only a select stock of schematics to choose from when the floors are generated
I think the stock was available for viewing in the bradygames guide
But it makes navigation easier if you keep track if your progress on each floor

@20:30 Parasite Eve is actually a sequel a Japanese book written by a guy whose actually a microbiologist, so he specialized in things like cells, virus, parasite that sort of stuff. The parts of biology that are, well… microscopic. So a lot of the science is actually accurate though some of it was of course fictionalized.

When I played this back in the day, that rat transformation absolutely blew me away. I wanted to rip it off the game disc but didn't know how.
I was rather impressed even today first time seeing it. (Or more likely remembering it existed)

When I played this game, I had the first Eve 6 album on repeat in headphones. So I totally did not realize how awkward and anticlimactic some cut scenes were without voiced dialog!
Also, I'm not sure I ever got the true ending. I cannot remember. But thanks for slogging on through that so I could see it!
That true ending is an absolute slog, I can’t imagine too many would have the patience for it unless they really loved that kind of experience

Parasite Eve 1 and 2 need a remake. Especially Parasite Eve 1 needs one. And yeah, the Ayas movement in this game is, imo, the greatest weakness.

😏 I think we all have those kind of stories with some sort of media. Pretty sure my equal would be Batman Begins movie. I’m supposed to have watched it, but I couldn’t tell you a single second of what happens in it 😆
I really enjoyed PE back when it was released. But I was a kid who didn't really spoke english, so I missed most of the story and didn't understand the weapon mechanics.
Excellent video, loved Parasite Eve. The original never got a pal release so I ended up playing a dodgy ripped import in black and white.

Yeah they really need to bring the three parasite eve games back to modern consoles. Either redone or original with maybe a few tweaks like they've been doing. Third birthdays story was all over the place but it was a solid shooter for being on PSP. the movie in the 90s was pretty decent too.

@@ABitMoreJordan great review on one of my favorite games. I remember on my first play through combining a pistol and machine, but then found out on ng+ a rifle that has only one ammo was better. It let's you attack and move quickly. 🗜️

A survival horror JRPG, like that doesn’t sound like it should work. Because you know, horror’s all about tension, and the turn based nature of a JRPGs combat almost runs counter to the type of tension horror games thrive on. Yet, when you look at it in action it makes sense because JRPGs, like survival horror, relies a fair about on resource management. Parasite Eve had no right to be as go as it was, and man was it fucking good! That is until… PE…2 😬 Ouch. And then whatever the hell 3rd Birthday is supposed to be…. 😐😑😐. Other than that Parasite Eve is a fucking classic and absolutely needs to be ported over to current consoles. Ooh maybe even an FFVIII style remaster with updated character models! That’s be fucking great!
I'd prefer a Resi 2 style remake personally. I think that would be sweet if they could put the battle system in there.

@@scuff4094 with how these companies are nowadays, hate to say this because it made me cringe to even think, I'm sure if they offered the author of the novels enough of a commission off of sales or a large enough offer etc, they could possibly work out a deal of sorts.
I think that weird game thing they are trying to do with nft and art cards is maybe testing the waters with the "ip" because at that point, again, HATE to say it but I acknowledge all sides of the matter when I have my "bias" attempting to be as unbiased as possible; SE could further that property THUS creating it's own variant of parasite without even having to use the og IP. In essence "remaking" parasite eve and didn't have to shell out a dime. It's just business for some of these folks these days, sadly. So, we as the community have to put the energies and where they need to be and acknowledge that childlike positive of seeing it as a possibility regardless of the wall or obstacles

No surprise given that SE tried to make PE1 without his knowledge and authority until near completion, which would make for a bad working relationship from the start, plus he wouldn't need money after making a killing from the book, movie, games and manga. Plus he's a biologist.
With that NFT nonsense, that would be SE using what assets from the PE IP that they do own (characters) to make money. Which is all they can do apart from a non cannon spin off which was the 3rd birthday and even that was not really PE given it didn't have the title or any mention of source material, due to copyrights.
Could they use this NFT thing to come up with a Spiritual successor? Sure, as long as it doesn't infringe PE copyrights.
Do they need to test the waters? Definitely not. They know people have been wanting PE for quite some time...but they obviously can't do anything other than the previously stated and even then it still would not be PE. So, I digress, because in Reality Anything PE is Very Highly Unlikly.

Besides the bullshit final dungeon and boss is the only downside of the game. Besides that this is probably one of the best horror rpg ever made. It's a shame they only made one of these games because it could have been a good ip... Yes only one of them I won't believe anything else. Man Daniel is just one of the most badass game characters and he's just a npc.🗜️🗜️
