From Call to Assistance, How 911 Dispatch System Works

  • In the United States, you can summon emergency help from police, firefighters or an ambulance by dialing 911. The first such call was made in 1968 in Haleyville, Alabama. In 1999 Congress directed officials to make 911 the universal emergency number for the United States. Since then, emergency operators have answered more than 240 million calls a year. Lesia Bakalets spent a day with 911 dispatchers to learn about the job's rewards and stresses. Anna Rice narrates her story.

    My call center, we take the calls AND dispatch them. 3 dispatchers, covering 35,000 people in 375 square miles. One person on city police, one person on county police, one person on EMS, and any of the three cover fire. We also will cover for each other if someone is on 911.

      I worked in a similar setup - One person on calls, one on fire, one on police, though any of us could take over another's tasks at any time. I wanted to love that job, but man alive, I HATED it. Hopefully you enjoy it.

      Timmy K where I am, it’s a “smaller” country city, so to speak. I’m in Tennessee, and our process was a lot less difficult than many other dispatch centers I’ve seen. With ours, it was a general test that covered your typical subjects from school. Then, an interview with 3 different supervisors, and instead of just covering things like “what did you do in real life in _____ scenario?” It was more of a test to see your personality, because I’m one of only 13 employees, it’s a small group and we all have to get along. Especially since it’s a high-stress environment. The process was maybe a week, because we didn’t have to wait for the background check, since dispatch can do it themselves, no outside company was involved. The process to get *more* confident and decently efficient took about 3 months. However, it took about 7 months before I got good. To be perfectly honest, I’m still not great at dispatching fire! We deal with it so infrequently, I’ve only dispatched fire 3 times in the 9 months I’ve been working.

    Hmm. I wonder if Snyder knows who these non transparent employees work for ? - I would like to post that the people should not touch any free money give away from Community Bank, as today a barcode shipment of chemicals made it through a non transparent OSHA DOT hazmat placard loop hole, from a warehouse...not from Tony Robins off shore post office...uh does anyone even know who their postal workers are ? - We still have missing Fentynal, and theres no EBS warning of pandemic. Does anyone know whats being sprayed without identification to the Argon barrier membrane of Noble emissions ? - I bet no one even knows what I'm talking about since the Surgeon Attorney General lost his job back in 82. Its all perfectly ' legal '. Stay vigilant, this is a set up, please know your neighbors and warn them to not withdraw any stimulus until those chemicals have been varified by someone with a name tag identifiable to the windshield registration of a DOT fold out diamond placard. Thank you.

    The 911 dispatch where I live asks stupid questions and makes you repeat youself many times over, they try to make you answer in a ridiculous way so they can have something to laugh about at their yearly party. I give them the address where an accident is and they want my name and address where I live so they can get confused and send the paramedics to my house. You would think that someone could get the information like "accident" "where" "injuries" as long as help is on the way you really don't need my personal information I'll give that to the police if they ask.
    I'm driving and see a house on fire with a ton of smoke, they insist that I need to know if someone is in the house "well how the hell am I supposed to know I was just driving by like I said in the first place. Did you want me to break the door down and play peek a Boo pussycat, Just send lots of help.

    • @zinov3
      @zinov3 Před 5 lety +5

      They get your personal information incase they need to contact you for more information at a later date.. they *shouldn't* get your info confused with where the accident takes place.. just because you cant get multiple addresses without getting confused does not mean they cant.. also, they're usually typing down all the info as you are saying it..
