Tell me something Brad why do you repeat to your players "racket above the ball" what if you want to hit topspin then it is racket under the ball isn't it?

I think Brad is a pretty good TV analyst - I am a fan, and probably a good coach too. But I have to say his mechanics look like a regular 'hacker'. I just watched him play Peter Sampras in Tokyo, and he wasn't much better then, either.

That's why he "won ugly." I was growing up through high school and college when Brad in his best ATP days, especially around 89-90. The idea that he could ever beat Becker or McEnroe or any of the top players was laughable...until he went out and did it. It was fascinating to watch.

It not so much about how good your strokes look but where you place the ball, net clearance, spin and pace. My coach would make a line three feet from the baseline and I would have to hit every shot deep within that three foot margin. I got proficient at hitting three quarters pace but placed them deep which draws errors or short return which opens up,the court. I was drilled to hit very high returns when running wide to allow recovery time. It’s not about looking good but being able to control the ball , hit different spins, change pace, hight and direction. My coach was a huge fan of Brad Gilbert.

That's not the appeal of Brad Gilbert. Read "Winning Ugly"- great book.
