I've got conflicting information when to prune the espalier tree....I was told to prune in the winter or early spring to help control the shape and early summer (and not late summer or early fall) to control size. You mentioned to prune in late summer.....what is the reason for that?
I've always done it then, because the tree is slowing down. Pruning when a tree is dormant (in my experience) leads to a burst of new growth in the Spring which you don't necessarily want in espallier trees. By late summer, the tree is getting ready for dormancy, and by spring, energy will go straight into the fruiting spurs, rather than trying to make new branches.
