  • Dejian Zeng spent 12 hours a day attaching one screw to iPhones. As part of his summer project, the NYU grad student went undercover for 6 weeks at a Pegatron factory in Shanghai. He lived on-site in a dorm with 7 other people and got to experience what really goes into making the popular mobile device. He tells us what it was like.

Foxconn employs about 1 million workers at any point in time; it's essentially a city of its own. Even with the best working conditions, there's going to be people who take their life for reasons unrelated to their work and out of their control.
In fact, if you research deeper (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foxconn):
ABC News[32] and The Economist[33] both have done some simple comparison- although the number of workplace suicides at Foxconn is large in absolute terms, the suicide rate is actually lower when compared to the overall suicide rate of China[34] or the United States.[35] According to a 2011 Centre for Disease Control and Prevention report, the country has a high suicide rate with approximately 22.23 deaths per 100,000 persons.[36] In 2010, the worst year for workplace suicides at Foxconn with a total of 14 deaths, its employee count was a reported 930,000 people.[37]

Some of these things i have seen in American factories. I worked at a large-well known factory in the USA for a little over 10 years. Producing automotive parts for GM-Ford-Chrysler and some of the foreign manufacturers as well. First, this was a union shop. We have a union. I point that out because many people have this belief that unions protect workers and keep workplace rules in check. This is not always so. Our hours were equivalent if not worse than what this guy was saying. Your normal scheduled hours were 8 hour shift. But it was a regular-almost daily event that you would find out once you got there that you would have to do 12 hours. Then on some rare occasions at the end of that 12 hours you might be forced to stay 2-4 more hours. Break times were as followed. After your first 2 hours you got a 12 minute break. 2 hours later you got a 15 minute break. then every following 2 hours you got another 12 minute break. All of which time was deducted from your pay. It would take a good 5 minutes to walk to the break area or restrooms. My pay after 10 years? I was still only making $14 a hour. I was considered a longtime - legacy employee because most people they hired were smart enough to walk out after 2-4 weeks and i was one of the few to last that long. I ended up having to take some time off for sick leave due to a surgery, while off i found a different job and never went back. Didn't even call them to let them know. Best move i ever made.

When you have an employee turnover rate of 2 weeks to 2 months and you literally have to install physical suicide barriers IN your workplace, that's _very_ telling there's something gravely wrong and workers are unhappy.. prepzb 450$ a month is equal to 3000+ yuan. The prices of things are pretty low in China as mentioned in the video. You get 100 yuan a day. None of these people will spend that much.
Also 450$ a month makes up to 5400$ a year which is actually really close to the gdp ppp of China. So, these people are getting the minimum wage according to the Chinese standards.. The people who work there are 18-30 years of age and most of them consider this as just a temporary job to make some money. If it was so bad they wouldn't even consider working here, now would they??
You are a fucking idiot for comparing 450$ according to American standards. When was the last time you ate vegetable noodles for less than a dollar?? A bottle of water costs $2.50 in some places in US. For that money you could eat lunch and dinner in China!!!
