Bill's astro scripts have leveled the playing field in post-processing. His contribution to the hobby is not epic, but an introduction of a new epoch.
Well said mate! - He's one heck of a talented gentleman! :-)
Clear skies!
I always have your videos up when processing. You (and Bill) are providing so much value, so appreciated!
It's good to hear from you Carl!
So happy you like the vids mate, awesome! :-)
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment!
Splendid video Luke, I used your other video up to 17mins then jumped onto this one to finish. Well impressed with the results! Thank you for helping out the community…and top praise indeed from Astrobackyard!!!
Fantastic to hear that Rikki!! It's always a pleasure to hear from you mate, hope you are well :-D
Thanks lukomatico, I followed your other OSC to Hubble workflow video - but this is just incredibly fast! Thanks for the videos, I'm new to pixinsight but have learnt alot from you. Clear skies

Absolutely love this! I’ve been using your original method on everything but this more automated version looks great! Thanks (and of course to Bill too).
You're very welcome Stuart!! Glad you like this mate :-D
Luke @lukomatico and Bill @AnotherAstroChannel , these tools are a game changer! I've gone back through my library and within a few minutes have added color to my red filter images! Thanks so much
Great to hear Peter!! - Thanks so much for sharing mate :-)
Another great video Luke - keep them coming :) As a said to you on Patreon, your tutorials are very clear and easy to follow and IMHO the best out there :) These tools are amazing and with EZ processing suite, NoisEXterminator and StarExterminator, Pixinsight is by far the best Astrophotography image software.
Awesome, thank you so much mate!! - Really happy you like the tools and thank you for your support!
Thanks so much Luke! I just started to watch Bills video's yesterday. I had been looking for a way to make HOO images from my OSC data for the past 2 yrs. You and Bill made this a fast and easy process. Appreciate your time!
So glad it's useful for you Clint! - Bill did a superb job on it 🙏
Thank you!!
I subscribed to your channel after watching your last tutorial on OSC to Hubble in pixinsight. Thank you for all your hard work, the success I had processing the elephants trunk nebula really gave me the confidence to want to spend countless nights under the stars :)
Awesome, thank you so much mate! I'm super pleased to hear that :-) Clear skies!
That's awesome Luke! Well done and thanks to Bill as well!
Thank you Dave!! - Really appreciate that bud :-D
Thanks Dave!
Yet another cracker Luke. Thankyou so much for your collaboration to pruduce this. This one is now in my default workflow and I've done about 6 different objects all with better results. AND consistent which is great!
That's fantastic to hear Ken!! - Thank you so much mate and good luck going forwards :-) Clear skies!
Looking forward to giving this a go when I eventually get the rig back out. As many have said, many thanks to both yourself and Bill for making these PI tools available. For someone who has limited opportunities to image and process, these could be a bit of a game changer. 👍🏻 Noddy
Have fun mate!! I think you'll have a ton of fun with these techniques! :-)
Clear skies!
This is awesome bro!! So cool that you have this available for your subscribers
Thank you Isaac bro! :-D Happy to hear you like it!
This is truly unbelievable, my mind is blown away! I have a busy afternoon today and I figured I would give this a try and just wow! Thank you Bill truly amazing!
That's awesome to hear mate!! Hope you have lots more fun ahead of you! 😃
I'm not ready to go down the road of getting a mono camera and filter wheel. It's great to know there's great SHO tools for my OSC data
Thank you for watching mate! :-) I totally hear you about not feeling like mono yet, nothing wrong with that!
Hi Luke just tried Bill's latest pixelmath OSC to hubble drag and drop processes ......works absolutely brilliant. Thanks to Both of you again for all the help you've given especially those of us with OSC cameras.
Great to hear that Paul!! - So happy they are working well for you mate :-) Clear skies bud!
Bills tools have changed my world literally. I can’t thank you guys enough. It’s so exciting.
Love to hear it mate! - Thanks so much for watching! :-D
Very awesome of you to say Greg!
Thank you Luke. You (and Bill) continue to contribute fantastic insights into post-processing. For someone like me trying to improve my novice skills, your video gives me a chance to progress, not in baby steps, but in giant leaps! I truly believe you have done more for me (and the astronomy community) than anyone else. As always your videos are unique, passionate, and, in a word, very personal as you continue to encourage us to grow and expand our astro-horizons. Well done mate.
Joe, as always your kind feedback is touching and inspiring my friend! I really do appreciate you giving your time and support in the ways that you do mate.
You really are one of the good guys,
Thank you! :-)
Thanks Joe!!
Pretty remarkable stuff! I’m at the very beginning of this (astrophotography) and I must say it’s a relief to see a method of Pixinsight workflow that isn’t ‘completely’ baffling😅
Like I mentioned, I’m at the beginning of my astrophotography journey and having already invested in some monochrome gear, my main concern was Pixinsight itself and all the editing .. Many of the ‘beginner tutorials’ I’ve seen are I’m sure intended to be simple but have often gone completely over my head!!!
I stumbled across your channel and this video specifically and it would seem there ARE actually ways of simply, quickly and effectively editing data. Thank heavens.. Feel a little less overwhelmed now and in turn, a little more optimistic about editing in the future! Cheers👍
That's absolutely wonderful to hear mate, thank you ever so much for sharing such an uplifting and encouraging comment!! 👍👍
Clear skies to you!
Literally just spent 4 hours on your other OSC to hubble video and then this comes out.
It's a great quick summary video! I'm glad I learned how to do it fully in-depth first :)
Ah mate that's kind of a raw deal haha! As you say though, you do know the process both ways now so can choose whatever works best for a given target! :-D
Thanks for watching!
Thanks!!!
Amazing Video man! Your Photos are just Colorful to describe! 🤩
Thanks Avanteesh!! :-D Clear skies buddy!!
Hi Luke a really good tutorial from you again mate , and many thanks to Bill for making and sharing such great tools
Thanks so much for watching mate!! - it's our pleasure! :-)
Clear skies!
Thanks Anthony!!
Just discovered this video from you Luke. Perfect Christmas present from you! Thanks so much. As always, I enjoy learning from you and you have taken my processing results up several notches! Have a great Christmas, and thanks again. Dr B from Manitoba, Canada.
That's lovely to read Dr. B!! Thank you for your kind words, you've put a smile on my face this cold morning! :-)
All the best to you and yours, hoping you have a wonderful Christmas and new year my friend 👍
@@lukomatico I’m thinking about imaging the Phantom of the Opera Nebula (Sh2-173) over Christmas with my 110mm refractor, 2600MCPro and L-Extreme. Nice and high in the northern sky for me right now. Just need some clear skies and praying for the temperature to be a little more reasonable than -30oC during the night!! Enjoy your Christmas Luke. Brian
What a great guy you are, giving credit to Bill instead of ripping off his techniques. Not to mention teaching it to me for free. Thanks much!
I'm glad you like the video mate! Thanks for watching!
Fantastic video Luke, Bills tools are amazing, I’ve been using them a lot already! Great tutorial mate👍 Good seeing you Saturday, my vid of that will be out today 😀Clear skies!
Glad you enjoyed it Simon mate!! :-D They are tremendous!
Loved your video by the way, watched it straight away!
Thanks Simon!
Hi Luke,
Saw these on Bill’s channel, and thought they were fantastic, I have shared yours and his video on all the FB Astro groups I run and am a member of, it just makes the job so easy, hats off to you, for the original idea, and to Bill for putting into this tool….
Stewart
That's so kind of you to do Stewart!! Sharing really helps us so much in getting the videos spread out there - Massive respect mate, thank you!
I hope you enjoy the tools buddy!
Many thanks Stewart!!
Ripper process Luke. Thanks to you and Bill.
I appreciate that Tony, thanks mate!! :-)
Thanks Tony!!
Wow. I've trying to learn PI but struggle with competing family priorities. Thanks Luke for a very timely video. Bill's tools are a game changer
My pleasure mate!! Thanks for watching 👍
I used your veil data and Hubble techniques as a tutorial when learning pixinsight and produced my first good image with it. These new tools from Bill based on your technique are simply amazing. Will definitely try it again as soon as I get a clear night and some narrow band data 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Awesome to hear that Tom! - I think you'll really enjoy them!
Thanks for watching mate, and good luck :-)
Thank you!!!!
Luke that is so cool.... Once I get back into astronomy shape I will have to try this..... Thanks for the video
Thank you mate!! It's a lot of fun :-) Clear skies!
Hey Luke, I’ve been using Bill Blanshan’s SHO Normalization Process today, it works so well for mono imaging also👍🏻 It’s really impressive and has made a huge difference to my workflow and results, also impressive is that he gave you a well-deserved shout out for the amazing work you have also done, which clearly he was inspired by… Great stuff and so much appreciated by the Astro community ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Cheers mate, glad to hear you've been enjoying both the processes!! :-) That's great stuff!
Thanks so much for watching!
Nice!!! Can't wait to try these out!
Hope you enjoy! Thanks mate!
Thanks Luke! Really great information!!
Thanks for watching mate! :-)
Many thanks, the clouds have followed me from Cape Town to Durban for the week!
Many thanks mate! - Hope those clouds clear soon!
These tools are great. Thanks to both you and Bill. I think the color masking tools are at least as impressive as the normalization tools. I'll have to dig into the pixel math formulas to try to really understand what's going on. Thanks again!
Thanks so much Wes! Only too happy to help somehow my friend :-)
If you'd like to really dive into the 'how' of these tools' inner workings, then Bill's videos do a great job at covering that kind of thing!
Thank you for watching :-)
Luke, fantastic, thanks for sharing, I’m been using your method since you published, but these tools make it flawless and always getting great results, I also have Pac-Man Nebula, so happy using tools. I will say thanks to Bill as well
That's awesome to hear Antonio, so glad you like this work!! :-D
Clear skies my friend!
Thank you very much!!
Thank you very very much for this tutorial. I love this process and the scripts so powerfull!
Thanks so much for watching!!
Hi Luke. Impressive "Fast & Furious" processing technique... The results are really beautiful. Thanks to you and Bill for sharing your knowledge. I'm going to have to start using PI... Hugs
Thank you Jesus! :-D I think you'll really enjoy PixInsight when you give it a go my friend, I know you're a talented guy so you'll grasp it very quickly!
I appreciate you watching!
Thanks Jesus!!!
I’ve literally reprocessed all my data from this summer using Bill’s tools. They’re a total game changer and make the power of Pixinsight available without a steep learning curve.
That's honestly awesome to hear mate :-D so happy you're enjoying them!
Once again a very helpful video
So nice of you to say Jane, thanks! :-)
Awesome tools and an awesome tutorial!
Glad you think so! Thanks Sammy!
Amazing, really amazing. Thank you very much 🙂
Thank you so much mate!! :-D
Wow.. just tried this on one of my unprocessed NGC700 OSC stack... worked brilliantly.. Well done Bill and Luke..
Great to hear mate!! :-D Thanks for giving it a go!
Thanks Hogarth!!! :-)
it worked perfectly for me thank you so much!
Awesome to hear it Paul!! - really pleased mate :-D
Hi Luke, these tools are amazing. I may have missed something here but when would you apply any noise reduction. Cheers.
Hey Mick! Hope you are well mate :-)
Glad you like the tools!! Re: when to apply noise reduction, it somewhat depends on the tool but generally speaking earlier can be better 👍
If using ez-denoise, then use it right before you perform a stretch.
If using Topaz, use it late, right before putting stars back into an image is generally a good time.
If using ez-denoise then early on, before stretching etc, then also feel free to use it later on again too - it's flexible!
Great set of tools and tutorial. Could I just clarify that before you start the drag and drop process, once you load your stacked image, do you do a background neutralisation first off?
That's right mate! - Thanks for watching by the way :-)
Luke you're bating a 1000 with all your new YT videos. Incredible help to us all. BTW, I think when removing stars with StarX I would recommend selecting the "onscreen Stars" option and using Bill's PixelMath formula for re-screening stars back in. And wow, Bill is really mathematically smart and super generous to give us all such wonderful tools to simplify our workflow and greatly improve our images!
Just a request... could you do a WBPP video to help us to get the highest quality calibrated and integrated images for these new breakthrough post processing tools. I think some help choosing the best settings for the best sub exposure, normalizing and also channel alignment to best reduce CA. I'm mostly shooting nebulas with two different HyperStar setups, Idas NBZ and the ASI2600-MC so at this point most interested in OSC dual-band & HOO pallet. Thanks for all!
Thanks James! - I appreciate the suggestions for future vids mate, thank you! (I can't commit to anything right now though!)
Wow this is really cool, guess I will be spending the evening in PI. Thanks!
Awesome! - hope you enjoy it mate :-D
Thanks for this great tutorial. Does this process work with normal unfiltered OSC or only when using narrow band filters?
Hey there Alain! - Really it needs to be data taken through a duo-narrowband filter to work properly with this technique, hope that helps! :-)
Awesome Luke it worked really well, How far away from this technique for processing Andromeda or similar ?
Awesome to hear mate! Glad it worked for you :-) RE: processing for Andromeda, this method isn't suitable really - it's only intended for duo-narrowband nebula data :-) Hope that helps clarify mate!
I’ve just started using this technique, I wasn’t getting the colours great but going to have another crack after seeing my issue was not playing with the red channel first!
Thanks so much for watching Ian!!
Another great video
Thanks so much Sean!! Glad you like it mate :-)
I love your work. I am a Yorkshireman in Texas so I have the benefit of some pretty darks skies. I am lazy so I image from indoors in my Bortle 5 backyard with a dual band filter on an OSC. I have just bitten the Pixinsight bullet and was happy to find your channel. The Hubble palette is pure art IMHO.
My question, oh wise one: I am also a "terrestrial" photography and already own and use Topaz AI. Where in the overall flow do you insert this tool? Clearly you save a file (format?) and process in AI and then what? Do you use PI noise tools in your flow at all in this case or do you combine them. That was actually one question. Honest. Ta very much
Hey Bob! - Good to hear from you mate, I hope the Texas weather is treating you better than the Yorkshire weather at the moment haha! :-)
Re: Topaz in the workflow, usually I'd leave it until really late in the process - pretty much last thing before putting the stars back in - that said, it's fairly flexible and if you don't use too strong settings with Topaz you can actually apply twice during processing for a really smooth end result. - Saving your interim starless work as a .tiff is totally fine, it'll work in both Topaz and PixInsight that way.
Re: using PI own noise tools, practically never to be honest!
Hope that helps mate!
Nice one m8. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, will do! Clear skies bud!
Nice result Luke
Thank you buddy :-D Clear skies!
as a novice this helped me out so much , will still take me a while to perfect it but i really thought to get images like this i would have to go down the mono route, now dont get me wrong i may still go that way when i get more accomplished in the hobby, but with my 2600 mc pro i am loving the hubble pallette colours now we can use, & will have plenty more practice until i am a bit better ..thanks luke &/ bill your a genuis
Glad to hear you enjoyed the video Richard, thanks for watching! - all the best mate 👍
Awesome . love it
Thanks so much Dave!! - Really appreciate it mate :-)
I just got my first ever ‘Top Pick’ on Astrobin using this process… thanks to Yourself and Bill for making that possible… well happy Astrophotographer here 😀
Aw mate that's bloody fantastic!! :-D So happy for you, well done and thanks for letting me know it helped!! :-)
@@lukomatico Actually, it’s a Top Pick nomination but still ecstatic here 👍🏻
Only one word : BRAVO !
Thanks Joel! :-)
i've used your technique so many times..this makes things so easy!! i feel like i'm cheating:) thanks to both of you for your work
So happy to hear that bud, thanks for the awesome feedback! :-) Clear skies man!
Luke what filter did you use on this please .the colours when I play with this data in pixinsight are superb
Thank you matey!! These were data sets from the IDAS NBZ UHS filter 👍
Great filter I reckon, especially for the RASA!
this is amazing, so is it worth going mono and SHO filters? or I can just do this? I am on the border to get a mono camera to have a better quality, but it looks like I can use color shoot with l-extreme and convert it.... ?
Good question mate, honestly mono and filters is going to be overall higher quality, but it costs a lot more to get into and has added complexity of dealing with individual frames.
Mono Vs OSC has never been a closer battle than it is right now though I'd say, these modern sensors are so efficient it's starting to just become a case of preference I think.
That's my opinion anyway bud!
@@lukomatico thank you, I decided to stay with color and I got Traid Ultra, I am trying to watch your all videos ;)
Awesome to hear :-D enjoy!!
These are great I really must get Pixinsight. I don't suppose there is a version for Siril?
I'm afraid not Clive! - It's a PixInsight exclusive at this point but I do have a tutorial for this kind of process, albeit totally manually, done in Siril at this link - czcams.com/video/YkxhGhuj3YQ/video.html
Thank you so much
You're most welcome!
amazing tutorial
Glad you think so mate!! Thanks! :-D
Nice one Luke, would you happen to have more data taken with the Uranus-C camera please?
Thanks Stephane! - I'll try and update my shared drive soon with some more data :-)
@@lukomatico thanks
Nice !
Thank you! Cheers!
great stuff luke....quick question,,did you used to go shooting by any chance...and have another you tube channel. ?
Hey there mate! - I did/do shoot still occasionally yeah! RE: second youtube channel, I've got an unused one with no videos but other than that, no mate!
@@lukomatico you remind me of someone else maybe luke.....keep up the great work.was hoping for the player one cooled camera release but been told they cant get the sony sensors atm...shame i quite fancied one ,i may get the uranus c for the time being.
Ah no worries mate! Thank you by the way!
Re: player one cooled cams, I think they have the sensors now as far as I'm aware, the cams shouldn't be too far off now! :-)
Thanks for the link to the Pixinsight Tools. I have downloaded the files. This is probably a really dumb newbie question but how do I add the XPSM files to Pixinsight? Thanks.
Just drag and drop them in mate, hope you enjoy!
@@lukomatico Thanks. Much appreciated.
I'm fairly new here I do have pixinsight how did you get your presets would love to know
Hey mate! - You can download the package from any of my recent tutorials if you'd like the presets! :-) Hope that helps!
Looks awesome how do you actually get the tool into pixinsite? I see the link and when I double click on it, it recognizes that its opened something in pixinsite but don't see how to use it?
Hey there mate! If you drag it into pixinsight and it doesn't appear on your workspace, you'll need to right click an empty spot on the pixinsight workspace then select 'arrange all icons'
Hope that helps!
Just brilliant. That is all.
Thank you Jim buddy! :-D
Ciao luk.... Queste icone di processo sono veramente formidabili. È un grande successo per me e per tutti quelli che usano pixinsight. Sai quale è il mio sogno? Delle icone di processo che rimuovono i gradienti, così da non poter utilizzare più ABE o DBE
Thank you my friend! I really appreciate that! :-)
Great video Luke. Thank's a lot. I tried it on my old NGC 6960 .But, the HOO gives an output more near to SHO and opposite(when old method used). Maybe there is some kind of typo in the naming of the icons?
Thank you Frank! - At a guess, I think the issue might be down to the nature of NGC 6960, it's a target that doesn't lend itself well to this kind of technique I reckon? How does it work on other targets out of interest?
Good luck mate!
@@lukomatico Hi Luke. I tried Wizard nebula and it gives me a silmilar results :)
Interesting! - the plot thickens, I assume the wizard looked right when done with the usual technique too? I'm sorry for the questions, just trying to figure out where we're at 👍
@@lukomatico Correct. I just tried Soul nebula...unfortunately same outcome :) Maybe my L-eXtreme filter is wild :)
@@lukomatico But want to say thet it makes a great job.....
Is Bill's tool a plugin? Or is it an expression to copy and paste into PixelMath?
Best to download and treat it as a tool I'd say! The links to my drive for hosting are in the description :-) Good luck!
I got error when using it and it can't be applied to image. Can you guys help?
Hey mate! - sorry you've had some issues with this, are you able to describe what the error message is?
If you haven't already then try with a fresh window of pixinsight open to just drag the icons onto the workspace, right click and arrange all icons if they aren't immediately visible, then go from there!
Good luck!
You're really trying to sell Pixinsight to us aren't you Luke, interestingly enough we were talking to Peter Shah on the Roboscopes stand & he were saying the same to get Pixinsight lol. It were great seeing all at the IAS by the way I did buy a couple of bits so the Newtonian will be getting reinstated when galaxy season arrives it just means I'll have to lower the pier lol.
Great video mate keep up the good work clear skies 👍
It was great to see you both again, we had a lovely day at the show but we were totaled by the time we came home hahah, slept like a log!
I think PixInsight could be the next step along mate, it's simply the best tool out there for the job 👍
Thanks for watching!
Hi, I tried to execute this process icon with a drag and drop on my non-linear starless image but PIXINSIGHT give me an error in the console, why ?
That's odd my friend, I'm sorry you've had some trouble with the tool!
Did it work when clicked to expand within pixelmath perhaps or still nothing?
@@lukomatico I have 1.8.05 of Pixinsight
@@lukomatico I have the same error.. can't figure It out
how do you install those scripts? I cant figure it oujt
\
Should be a case of just dragging them into the pixinsight desktop mate, they'll load in - if they aren't showing then right click and arrange all icons 👍
Does this work on Mac? Can't get this tool to load. But I'm also kinda new to PI....and also kinda dumb.
Hey mate! should work just fine on mac! :-) Try just dragging the icons into the workspace.
Good luck!
@@lukomatico got it working by looking at some other comments. They went to workspace 7. That said, I reprocessed my Cygnus wall data with the sho tool…wow. I was able to achieve what took me an hour to process previously in a matter of minutes. Beautiful tool. Thank you and Bill for this.
As a complete newbie to Pixinsight, this is encouraging. However, this vid assumes some basic knowledge as it goes pretty fast. I would really appreciate something a little slower which allows one to follow each little step and mouse click a bit more easily! Many thanks!
Thank you so much for the feedback my friend! :-) I'll be sure to try and slow things down a little in future, cheers!
Luke I click on show more in the link and do not get anything ....Is it me ?
It could well be you Steve, someone's tried this out already and got a great result! Any chance you have some sort of blocker?
@@lukomatico No it was showing nothing yesterday , I went back today and found the link there , very strange , thx
I’m not sure where to find this. I was looking in Resources/Updates. Am I looking in the wrong place?
You can download the tools from my google drive in the video description mate, from there just drag and drop them over into pixinsight! Hope that helps!
Yup, just a little trouble getting it into PI! Thanks!
No worries bud! - if it's saying "loaded" in the console but they aren't showing up on the workspace, it's likely they are in another one - try loading them in, right click an empty space, arrange all icons - that should work for you! :-)
Okay, I finally got to use this and I must admit, I have a problem with this! It’s just toooo easy, I kinda feel guilty! I feel like that I should work harder to get these results!!
That's superb haha 😁 I hope you continue to enjoy them my friend!!
I'm a bit dumb mate,,,I can't do this with my 1 shot colour asi 533 can I ?
You certainly can do this mate yeah! - You just need nebula data taken through a "duo narrowband" filter basically, then you can give it a go!
@@lukomatico get off!! A duo narrowband filter,,,I'm on it .! Thanks very much m8y. 😀
@@spaceinyourface No worries mate!! Good luck 👍👍
Wow! That's so fast it's almost silly! :)
Thanks Chris!! :-D It's pretty crazy ain't it!
& lets be honest bill could of made some money out of this but instead gave his genuis to help the astro comunity .thank you
Someone gave me the link to this video to learn this but having watched it I don’t have a clue what u just did lol
It's magic! 😁
@@lukomatico no I mean some of it you’re going too fast

Drag the bottom left arrow over to your HOO image

1) On symbols page, turn OFF OIII Scurve=0, On=1
2) Works best on a non-linear image; however, because this method
is a linear style stretch, stars in the image will most likely be
blown out. It is best to remove the stars first. The preferred
method to adding the stars back is using my RGB to Narrowband
