  • Jeff Keogh was born into a mother and baby home in 1965 - ‘having a black child in Ireland at the time might have been a heavy scene’, he told us - and while growing up in Ireland wasn’t always easy, he says his experience was mostly positive.
We spoke to Jeff as part of ‘Yes, I’m Irish’, a video series focusing on the experiences of mixed-race Irish people. Watch the full series here: bit.ly/YesImIrish

I'm about this guy's age and I had to do that once - for locking another kid's bike to a fence at the swimming pool and running away. I feel as if it was a common form of discipline at that time, but that may just be because my Dad made me do it. And he only had to make me do that one time.

I must admit that surprised me. He was so nice and helped me call a cab since my phone wasn't working and there are NO public phones in Dublin Airport. I wish I could have bought him a pint but we both had places to go. Thanks again kid! 😊

I know in my children's 2 schools that parents take a similar approach and racism is not tolerated. My husband is dark skinned and my children mixed race and we have taught them not to tolerate any racist comments. I am Irish and I can say from my experience if a racist comment has been made around me or my friends it would not be tolerated.
