Haven't used the reel but I've heard it's a decent reel especially for its price range. Only lews reel i can verify is the custom black and it's great.
I have the white custom and love it.
With those hook keepers, you can actually slide an EWG style hook up under it. It’s very tight to the rod and it’s actually one of my favorite styles of hook keepers. I just have the Hank Parker rod from Walmart and it uses the same style.
You can, but you'll end up scratching up your rod as you said it's really tight to the blank.
@@TackleJunky81 doesn't that kvd reel have a hook keeper also? Two options with that combo.

It's to bad they don't make a 6'10" medium heavy baitcast rod in this series. Just a personal preference, I can't be as accurate with a 7' rod!
I was thinking the same but saw that they have a 6'8" model and figured it was the next best thing. The rods are actually on sale at cabelas right now for about 60-70 bucks. I just picked up one myself today.

I own and like the Lew's KVD reel. It performs well and looks great. The KVD reel would not be my choice of reel at its retail price point, but I got a great deal on one. I like the suede feel grips. There is lots of good competition in the price range of the KVD reel and rods.
I hear ya...it's definitely a solid combo for the price though.

I had that exact rod in my hands for like 20 min at bass pro shops. I ended up buying something else but I still dream about it 😍. Nice rod for around $100

Great gear review. I’m a big fan of Lews reels but haven’t tried any of the KVD series yet . Their rods are hit or miss depending on what you’re doing . I’ve got a lower end Speed Stick that’s great for jerkbaits but I snapped both Mach II rods I had . Love the unbiased opinion!! Great video as always

I remember using the old Quantum KVD crankin rods and had the same conclusion you came to for my personal preference. To me it was like swinging a broomstick around all day and too stiff. Looks like that's KVD's preference and obviously it works for him. In honesty, I am a short dude at 5'5" and maybe it is more ideal for taller dudes like KVD. I do have Lew's combos and really like them. Not a knock on the design or manufacturer, just not the best fit for me.
Yup, I've never been a fan of any glass rods honestly.
I did not like the cranking rod either because if its weight. But also to me most composite rods are heavier. I still crank with graphite. This rod I might have to check out.
Agreed, I only use graphite.

My only beef with the KVD Lew's rods is that for the longest time I thought GC stood for _Glass Composite_ because I'm dumb.

I have a KVD reel, and would love to try the rod but cannot. Because of a hand injury I cannot use EVA grips.

owning a 3 or 4 Lews rods and reels...this one looks great BUT I'm so use to Winn Grips, foam grips are a deal breaker :/
yeah foam grips on casting rods suck, they're fine on spinning rods though

Have you tried getting some of the heat shrink rod grips from Amazon or the like? It's not very expensive and it is an easy way to upgrade EVA foam handles.
That lure rating seems a bit unrealistic.
It is a pretty big range...
I don't know. I bought one of those _exclusive_ Quantum rods from Dick's a few years ago on clearance solely because it was the first IM8 that I saw under $50. That rod has a much thinner taper and is only rated for lures .25-to-1.5 ounce but I've definitely been able to throw finesse jigs and heavier swim baits on it without any issues.
Whats your opinion and thoughts when the rod says 1/4 - 2 oz baits. Do you think if they re-engineer the rod and drop it down to 3/4 or 1 oz it would make the rod better or worse
I like the rod how it is, but if you changed up the specs I'd imagine it would make it a bit softer.

I personally don't think it's strong enough for that, but some braid would beef it up.

Those hook keepers are one thing that keeps me from using Lew's rods (they're not kayak rod tube friendly)
Could always add one above the reel.
Just hook it on your baitcaster frame by the worm gear
Just putta abu pro max and a Hank parker rod together for 120 bucks. Not as many rod options but the pro max is a better reel and you're getting an im8 blank with that Hank rod. Just saying...
