History Of Beaumanor
In the mid-19th century, William Railton designed the Grade II listed Beaumanor Hall near Loughborough, Leicestershire for the Herrick family. Built by George Bridgart in 1850, the hall was constructed on a site containing buildings from as early as the 14th century. In 1862, William Herrick married the much younger Sophia Christie and, along with William’s sister, the pair made their home in the hall until her passing in 1871 and his in 1876, after which his assets passed to Sophia and she remained in control of the estate until 1915.
In 1939, the War Office seized Beaumanor Hall and turned it into a top secret listening station, where encrypted enemy signals were intercepted. Furthermore, the premises housed training centres for civilians of the Post Office, Civil Service and Merchant Navy, and Royal Navy and Royal Air Force personnel.
Subsequently, after the War, the Hall was given back to the Herrick family, who sold off the estate’s assets in 1946. Then, the War Office reacquired the hall until it was finally bought by the Leicestershire County Council in the 1970s.
The Hauntings
In the main dining room, numerous inexplicable occurrences have been observed, including a plate flying off the table and crashing on the ground with no one present in the room. Additionally, the apparition of a coachman who hanged himself is believed to have been seen in the attic, and the sound of marching boots emanating from uninhabited areas.
In the dreary, dark attic, footsteps have been heard drawing closer. Similarly, a female spirit thought to be the wife of William Herrick has been spotted hovering around the grand staircase of Beaumanor Hall. Additionally, peculiar shadows and glimmers of light are believed to have been seen in the eerie cellar and ghostly scraping sounds heard on the stairs of the servants’ quarters. - Zábava
The History of Beaumanor Hall
Beaumanor Hall has a rich and varied history. Built between 1842 and 1854 by architect William Railton for the Herrick family, it remained in their possession until World War II when the estate was requisitioned by the War Office. Throughout the war the Hall was used as a secret listening station to intercept encrypted enemy signals. The Hall was bought by Leicestershire County Council in 1974 for use as an education and conference centre.
Y Stations were British Signals Intelligence collection sites used during World War II. These sites collected traffic which was then passed for processing to the Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire. The traffic was recorded by hand and sent to Bletchley, on paper by motorcycle couriers, or later, by teleprinter over post office land lines.
Beaumanor Hall was requisitioned by the War Office in 1940 and set up as a Y Station. Buildings were erected in the grounds (which are still in place) disguised as cottages, barns, stables etc. These housed the intercept personnel listening for German and Italian encrypted messages. We are always very happy to talk to anyone who has knowledge or memories of Beaumanor during the war and especially of its links with Bletchley Park.

Some great unexplained noises too - the cellar tap and the footsteps in particular. Just to reiterate, K2's, REM-POD's and gadgets like them do not know what to actually detect as no-one knows what form spirits (if they exist at all) take. They are merely electro magnetic field detectors (K2) and generators (REM-POD). I firmly believe the best approach is the one you normally adopt which is to listen for noises/sounds.

Another excellent rational and logical investigation in an amazing property. Nice to see nothing that could be said to be paranormal happened (as usual) 🙂 At risk of sounding cynical, the venue is provided by a commercial concern and you could argue it is in their interest to make it appear to be haunted .. to keep the punters interested as it were.

As for the GhostTube app, the advertising for it clearly states it is for "entertainment purposes" and with that in mind, apart from the obvious fact like a spirit (if they exist) from a bygone age would have no idea how to interact with a mobile phone, the app is little more than a piece of software which may listento what the user(s) around it are saying (as the microphone is on) and then, after some rudimentary speech analysis, spit out word or phrases which may be vaguely correct.

I remember staying here on a school trip! We stayed in some out building with bunk beds in, late at night we could hear tapping and freaked ourselves out so all the girls pulled their mattresses on the floor and we all kipped together scared 💩less! 🤣
