One of the best blues rock players I've ever seen is the late, great Kim Simmonds when he played in L.A. in '87. Absolutely outstanding. I got to meet him after the show. Cool dude. Now, I know Allman Bros are considered more southern rock, but Dicky Betts and Warren Haynes were amazing live. Some of the best playing I've ever heard. Frank Marino deserves some props. I've never seen him live in person but I've watched a lot of concert footage and I've owned all of his albums. Incredible. Brilliant.

I was just watching a studio player who had been on the road opening for Billy. He ran across Billy in the Nashville refret center. The studio guy had his two boys with him and Billy talked to his single digit aged kid for an hour. I was sales manager for one of the original vintage stores in 1974. ZZ was one of the accounts. Billy has always been (as the Nashville studio guy describes him) the sweet guy. He is one of the nicest, unpretentious people you will ever meet. He is very tongue in cheek, and an encyclopedia of the blues (to the level of ethnomusicologist).

I'm older than you & Matt so my introduction to the blues was via blues rockers of the 60's and early 70's. Along with Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and Clapton with Cream, Blind Faith, John Mayall and Derek & the Dominoes, the blues rock albums I listened to the most were by the J Geils Band and the Allman Bros, esp Live at the Fillmore East. You guys might only remember J Geils from their 80's pop hits but they started out as a kick ass blues band. They were one of the best live bands of the 70's and one of the highlights of each show was their rendition of John Lee Hooker's Serve You Right to Suffer. As for J Geils blues rock albums it would have to be their first 3 - the self-titled debut, The Morning After, and Live: Full House. For no particular reason I never got into ZZ Top and instead listened to guys like Johnny and Edgar Winter and oddballs like Captain Beefheart with his version of the blues on acid. Never saw Johnny live but I did get to see Edgar's White Trash when Rick Derringer was the new kid on the block as they burned down the Fillmore East opening for Emerson, Lake & Palmer on ELP's 1st US tour. The first real blues record I bought was Buddy Guy and Junior Wells Play the Blues, not because Clapton was on it but rather cuz the Geils band backed them up on 2 tracks.

That was a really fun conversation. Thanks.
It was a nice surprise to learn that Jeff Healy had an impact on Matt. And I very much agree with the comments about RobbenF & the BL: it was something of a watershed to have all those solos with all those tasteful outside notes while keeping a very tight focus on blues rock at the center of it all. A strong recommendation is the album Tom Cat by Tom Scott and the LA Express, Joni Mitchell's touring band for a time, which has some very cool ensemble playing, and fine solos by a much younger Robben Ford. As for the absence of reliability of newspaper and magazine writing about music (and other topics), I totally agree. It's been a trend for like 50 years that coming across writing that's interesting and intelligent about music keeps getting rarer.
All that said, in omitting certain names, you did succeed, fabulously, in convincing me that you conspired to annoy, specifically, me.
    1. There was a British band, forget the name, but they recorded songs like "Come Together", "Get Back", "One After 909", and "For You, Blue". Now, granted, there's not much in the way of ground-breaking hot guitar soloing there (Billy Preston's playing compensates!) but it's worth stating that their creation of a modernized version of the blues, which helped to keep the genre in the public ear, is not without importance.
    2. Did neither of you go through a Little Feat phase? Blues-rock was only one of the genres they visited, but when they did, it was deep, pure (not slavish), righteous and creative.
    3. Ry Cooder. I could write more but you're probably tiring of me.
    4. Robert Cray. Especially in the 10 - 15 years after his 3 or 4 "big" (i.e. moderately successful) crossover hits. I could write lots more, but I do wonder if we're just too far apart in sensibility for the gap to be bridged. Like, it's super easy for me to imagine a 2 or 3 or 4 hour long video solely devoted to highlighting dozens of stunning and breathtaking musical moments from the recordings of The Robert Cray Band.
Anyway, I love both your playing, and best wishes to you both.
    In spite of your conspiracy.
Which included, in a convo about blues-rock, bringing up names like Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath and Metallica. And I'm not saying they didn't accomplish anything in their respective genres.

You young guys are funny 🙂. Just kidding. Love you both. I'm 69 start playing in '66. Beatles, Ventures, the same old stuff. But Cream shook my world. I still have all their albums which are pretty much wore out now. Didn't have a stereo back then, but I wired up my suitcase record player through my '68 silverface bandmaster and shook the windows at my parents house. I can't tell you have many times in my life I've listen to Cream's version of Cross Roads. To this day, if I hear that sound on the radio etc., which is rare anymore, I will stop WHAT EVER I'm doing and listen to Eric's short lead in that song. Many times I've stepped into a band to play a song. They'll ask what song do you want to play. I'll say Cross Roads. They'll say, which version. I'll say, is there any other version other than Cream's? Of course there is Robert, but you get my point if your reading this. Then Zep came around, then ABB, then SRV and that's history my friends! Bless the power Trio's, raw, punchy and LOUD.
