@Gameplay Today - When I was a kid, I thought that she wrote Boots of Spanish Leather, and since my mom was a huge fan, I grew up knowing every song by heart. When I heard Bob Dylan sing it, I got really pissed & apparently told my mom “this man ruined Nanci’s song!” I was then distraught to learn it was, in fact, his song. It’s ok though, I grew into a deep appreciation for Dylan’s music and love to hear it covered. But no one will ever replace Nanci in my heart. The first lullaby I sang to my nieces the day each of them was born Little Love Affairs -
When I wake in the night
      And find that I'm dreaming
You're the first thought in mind
Love's a fair weather friend when
      You're lonely
You are my summer state of mind
      (Chorus:)
Does it sing to you nightly?
Does it lay down beside you?
Does it make you hear songs
      On the radio?
      It once was my shadow
      Grown Weary of travel
      Till you gave it home
When my parents renewed their vows in Ireland on their 25th anniversary, the couple who owned the B&B where we stayed threw a big celebration for them at Kate Kearney’s Cottage in Killarney. Not even knowing about how much we loved Nanci, the band played “From Claire to Here” for them. You very rarely cross paths with another fan of hers in the states, but my favorite thing about Ireland was that it was hard to find someone who wasn’t a fan. 😢

@@DrAnderson1 the key is that the singer sings the song from the heart with the intent of the song writer in mind.
kris Kristofferson wrote the song about a sunday morning coming down.
kris wrote it for johnny cash to sing.
john did. kris dis and so did the highwaymen john kiris waylon and willie.

May Nanci Griffith have flown away to heaven, having caught some blackbird’s wing, with every sweet bluebonnet spring awaiting her arrival.
It would be a fitting & proper tribute to her life and all she left us with if amazing, talented artists like Kathy Mattea continue to cover her music & breathe new life into her lyrics with the same brilliance as this. Never to be forgotten, aNGel.

I saw her at about the same time. It was at the Luther Burbank Theater of Performing Arts in Santa Rosa, California. Might have been the same show? It was one of the best shows I have ever seen. At one point, she decided to give the band a break. After they left the stage for a few minutes, she pulled up a stool and sat down and sang a song Acapella. I have yet to this day heard anything to compare! She remains my favorite female vocalist and I long for the day to see her again.

I am amazed at the number of people commenting here cannot simply appreciate a song sung with sincerity by a beautiful performers feel the need to criticize, particularly those saying that because Nanci Griffith wrote it she and only she should sing it. How terribly negative and narrow minded. Both Nanci and Kathy are great artists and performers who speak to the world through through music, giving us their wonderful gift. Those who write songs, or poetry, or novels, or whatever, do so with the desire to share their work with others. I've heard it said that there is no greater honor than to have your work performed by others. There are few gifts greater than the gift of music. Cherish it, appreciate it, give if freely.

Yes, nauticalguy1. I've never met Nancy Griffith but I'm a devoted follower, so I'll take a leap. The classy artist that she is, I'm confident that nobody loves Kathy's copy of Five & Dime more than Nancy. To think otherwise requires the dimensions of a very small mind. Not that rivalries never happen; half a century ago, Paul Simon waxed snarky on the Mike Douglas TV Show. He was obviously miffed at the fact that S & G's 59th St Bridge Song was a far greater success for Harper's Bizarre than it was for him and Art Garfunkle. Sometimes it happens that way, but Simon wasn't happy about it. No shade on the immortal Paul Simon, but it wasn't his finest day. Just think of Simon's pompousness for what it was-- the exception to the rule.

I grabbed my guitar and played the song I wrote to her, ...she jumped into the air, landing squarely in the middle of the bed. Cat Stevens' very first hit was a song called, " I Love My Dog". Music is of the soul, and almost always about love. It should be shared.

We were listening and needing a beer real bad so we waited until she( so we thought) took a break. The band had walked off the stage and we thought the show was over so we got up and started heading to concessions for our beer. Then all of a sudden she started to sing another song only acapella. We waited and ended up not even moving it was that good. I have yet to hear a singer with the voice I heard that day it was simply put Perfection of sound. There are a LOT of wonderful singers who don't get proper exposure, like Kathy Mattea. It's a lot of chance and serendipity, and if you're what Nashville wants to promote.

Kathy Mattea's version is wonderful but Nanci Griffith's original, and especially her stage performance with its story intro, is superb.

Agree about no requirement to acknowledge composers but it is a nice courtesy when it happens. Nanci and Kathy have performed together.
