      This is funny with the ultralight stuff, so they have some really expensive but nice kids tents but they're usually less expensive than the adults so I ended up getting a dome style tent that was for a kid and two tarps because I couldn't afford super expensive gear I put one on the ground and one over top and left the rainfly off so that between the tarp and the tent area was The netting at the top, that was enough to let it vent condensation up onto the tarp then down off away from the tent, I used some saplings to kind of keep the tarp from touching the tent area so it kind of made a space between the two it stayed pretty dang warm I was very surprised but I'm getting too old for that kind of crap hahahahaha

      Holy cow that thing is pricey. Good review, though. Sounds really durable. So the mesh liner incorporates the floor? Is your retirement finalized? Love those German rolling hills.

    My now 50 yo 19D knees have fallen in love with the Light and UL world of backpacking gear. I am astounded by the number of people that keep on essentially suffering when there is no need to, even if it's just replacing say a shelter and a pack.

    • @johnschmalbach8243
      @johnschmalbach8243 Před 2 lety +1

      @Based F tried hammocks, comfy but not for me for a few reasons, obviously mileage may vary but here are mine. Ounce for ounce it costs more money to go light with hammock set ups. They are also more time consuming to set up, even once you have the technique dialed in. Now if the comfort they provided was clearly better than my ground set up these draw backs would be worth it but my Nemo Tensor Insulated wide pad is comfy to the point that the difference in comfort between that and quality hammock systems is marginal. Maybe hammock camping will become popular enough that the price of real quality light weight systems will drop because economies of scale finally kick in and then the only issue I would have is set up.

      @Based F curious where you found an under quilt that kept you under that price. They’re proud of those things

    Seriously impressed that you tested that for a year and that it held up so well. Great review all around.
    I've used a singled walled tent like that once and frankly the cons aren't worth it to me for the weight savings. Double the weight, free standing double-walled tents for me. 🤣

    Great to see your assessment! For the last three years I've been using the Six Moon Designs Gatewood Cape, which has almost the exact design, dimensions, weight, and materials, except the Cape also works as a great poncho with the peak being a hood. I agree that this is a fantastic setup.
    The zipper is volcanic grit-proof, the tie-outs are impressively strong, and the material holds out both the water and wind. Same as the Pyraomm, an inner bug tent easily snaps in. Mine only gets out 30 or so days a year, so I'm happy to hear you say a year of UV hasn't destroyed the tent 👍

    I like your idea of a long term extreme tent test. I'd love to see you do a similar review of the Durston Gear X-Mid Tent, (Ultralight/Needs Trekking poles). Non DCF versions start at $240 and are very well built with great storm worthiness too. And to the naked eye X-Mid looks like it may have more reinforced stiches than the Liteway. There are a ton of youtube reviews on it even in some gnarly storm conditions, but I have yet to see a review on it similar to what you did with the liteway. You could be the 1st!

    Hmm. At my age, I have been a UL guy now for yrs , except for winter . I had never heard of this Brand . Sounds great ! Anything from Zpacks , Tarp Tent , or for a cheaper but great option . Six Moon Designs . I have a tent from all three of these . In order....... Zpacks Free Duo , which is a unreal UL tent for days of backpacking on end . 30 oz total , not a tarp , but a real tent WITH tent poles.. GREAT .... Tarptent Aeon Li . My go to for Colorado , or when I know the hump is going to be a killer . This tent INCLUDES the netting .. 16 Oz TOTAL , needs ONE trekking pole !! Great high speed , low drag beast ! ... Six Moons Designs Lunar Solo . This is the BARGAIN UL , full fledged tent using ONE trekking pole . 27 Oz TOTAL , you pick " factory " seal seam or do it yourself . $250 , and was " Backpacking " magazines Editors Choice in 2019 . My go to in Michigan where I live , for non - hard hump or altitude tent . Great review , and testing GP !! ... gubs
