It's behavioural conditioning, not a proper form of training and learning pattern for the dog. Negative reinforcement is not healthy for anyone or any animal, when you give them a positive association with entirely non violent methods like a clicker or whistle, instead of thinking "shock bad" they think "whistle/clicker is good, I want more of this!", without ever using force or threat on the animal and helping it see what is decent behaviour within the home. It doesn't actually contribute to anything besides the design being painful for a lot of dogs, even if you have a tougher dog- proper training goes a long way, there's no positive use for it. Any dog can be trained out of aggressive pulling if given the time and patience, and if your dog is violent for whatever reason and you're using a prong collar to make it stop itself, it just means you're a bad owner. I adopted an 18 month old Doberman X Kelpie rescue 10 years ago. When I got her home we went for a 4 mile walk in a neighborhood where virtually every home has two dogs. Her new scent set every dog to bark. I pulled gently on the leash, said "ignore" and gave her a treat when she did not bark in front of the next house. Ever since that day, she has barked an average of once a month, when the dog next door looses his cool and goes apoplectic: she goes out and barks 4 times which he understands to mean "shut up". (I keep the "leave" command for when I don't want her to touch something). She's the third dog I have trained that way, and none of them have been barkers.

      I have a dog, I got her when she was a pup when I was 13. Her name is Lucy, she’s 25 lbs and full grown, medium dog.
      We used to take her out and put her on the tie out every hour and she’d bark relentlessly.
      She has anxiety really bad, especially when we first got her. We think she was abused by a big man because she’s extremely scared of big (tall) men specifically. She’s gotten much better over the years as I’ve helped her through it.
      But back then my parents hated the barking and they ordered a shock collar that automatically shocks when the dog barks.
      I hated the idea and criticized them heavily as I research everything new. (I’m an immense researcher and like to make sure things are safe) and ive always been against things like punishment in children so why would I allow it for dogs?
      Well they are my parents, I couldn’t argue or they’d take her back to the pound where she was living shaking in a water bowl.
      I even put it on myself around my neck and made a barking noise and had it shock me to see how bad it was. (I wasn’t gonna put Lucy through it without putting myself through it)
      Well, she didn’t get it, she’s very stubborn and was scared and when she barked and it shocked her, she started barking at the shocks and it kept shocking her. My dad ran out and took it off because she was crying and she bit him in the process. (He wasn’t upset)
      I was very angry with them and told them I told them so and I figured something out. Lucy didn’t want to be FORCED to stay outside, so what if I could let her choose?
      Every time I took her out I would hoist her up against the doors and make a scratching motion with her paws and then open the door to take her out, AND IT WORKED. She started telling me when she wanted out, she’d bark for me when she wanted in, and it really strengthened our bond. I can understand everything she tries to tell me and she learns very quickly, she’s very smart.
      One time she got her leash that was hanging up, brought it over and dropped it on my feet because she wanted to go on a walk! So cute!!
      We have a fence now and I just have to open the door for her and now that she gets to choose when she wants out, she stays outside longer and enjoys it. We have two little pups also that we have taught the same way.

    They’re so obsessed with “controling” the dogs. Dogs are your families. If you’re keeping them on your roof, you choose to have a friend. These animals have their own entity, their own soul. You don’t own them, they are never yours. They only belong to themselves. Now as a family, it is your responsibility to treat them with kindness and unconditional love. Every single dog has that capability, but it would only work when requited. Give love, and respect, receive the same.

They don't teach your dog to respect you or listen to you out of their own accord, but rather because the only other option is to be in pain or discomfort. People gotta remember dogs have the minds of toddlers. They need to be loved, nurtured, and conditioned with positive reinforcement. When you shock, yell at, or put prong collars and stuff on your dogs, you're basically doing that to a 3 year old

    • @dmichalak007
      @dmichalak007 Před 3 lety +185

      Actually, scientists say dogs have the mentality of a 2 1/2 year old; so even younger than you've stated. Now, here's where you're misinformed- prong collars and electric collars are to be used as cues and as a form of communication. People that use these tools "CORRECTLY" are trying to protect their dogs and save their lives. The corrections are done minimally and last a second. They also work immediately as opposed to a year of positive only training- if at all. Most importantly, the "Gentle Leader Leash" that Victoria is using in this video did more damage to my dog's neck than the prong collar ever would when my dog (that I rescued) became highly dog reactive. That leash works for leash pulling only. My dog was a leash puller as well which is why I purchased that specific leash. Now, both problems have been corrected. Yes, there are many poor pet parents in the world. However, this world has even more bad people parents.

    I use a prong on my dog and yes I tried it on my neck, does not hurt at all.if u use the collar like your meant to then it does no damage. The collar has to sit high on the neck just behind the ears. I got a prong for my dog because he was getting very reactive to other dogs on the lead literally chocking himself out on flat collar.. I tried face halti but then he would end up on back legs dangling from head collar. Prong is the only training collar that worked corrected him twice dog reactivity has stopped and he heels beside me. Lots of mistruths told about prongcollars.

    @skyforgerpack3645 Před 3 lety +4

    She has some good advice here and there, but she's completely wrong about the prong collar.
    1. They are fine if you use them well. They're not meant to be poking into the neck constantly and they're not supposed to be on the dog constantly. I only use mine for walks. (I have 2 wolfdogs and 2 Germans). They're meant to simulate a correction from another dog (prongs being teeth) and when it tightens that's when the prongs go straight. They should otherwise be laying more flat against the neck, not digging in.
    2. The reason why people put them on the arms to test them is because that's tougher skin. It's conditioned to more things, just like a dogs neck. Has she ever seen dogs playing? They pull on each other's skin and necks all of the time. I see my German Shepherd grab my wolfdogs neck and start pulling on it like a toy and the Wolfdog is fine. He just keeps playing. Comparing a human neck skin to a dog neck skin is disengenous at best.

    Prong collars are entry level leash pressure trainers. They are used to grant your dog disciplinary action, in the moment, in a language they can understand (i.e. a mother dog's bite). Discipline to stem bad behavior, and treats and praise to reward good behavior, is the foundation for training your dog to be the most obedient animal in your zip code. Just the other day there was a guy in with his dog, who had on a shock/e collar but the guy had forgotten the remote. The dog was sniffing things and not listening to its owner, and the guy was just muttering at the dog about how if he had the remote he would be "lighting him up", which honestly just disgusted me.

    Eh prong collar is more effective and less uncomfortable for a dog. my dog has no issue with her properly fitted herm sprenger prong collar but had HATED every head collar, easy leaders or harnesses. Not to mention the head collar can cause a lot of issues if a dog pulls coming from someone who works at a vet office :/

      Yes prong collars and ecollars when used correctly to condition dogs is perfectly humane. Probably more humane than people that try to train with only positive reinforcement and their dog pulls on the leash effectively strangling themselves. People that are so against ecollars have no clue about the modern technology. With basic obedience comes less barking.

      I also watch another dog training channel, and I have seen them be used very effectively, and I have seen the dogs respond very well to them, the dogs are obviously happy and enjoying themselves during the training. They are used only for a short time to train, and once they have realised the basics, they can go to a regular slip leash.
      I think people use them incorrectly by using them too much. The other channel I watch will use them to get the dogs attention, not through pain, but from a weird buzz or a tug and then it is immediately released as soon as the dog turns and looks at them and they are praised.

      They think they're pretty and don't use their heads. I should know, my parents gave me a German Pointer for my birthday years ago but thankfully I was at a time in my life that I could take care of her needs. Just the thought that if it had been a bit earlier scares me because then I would have been neglecting my baby...

    I saw a comment saying not to throw away the collars and to give them to other people. Do y'all really want other people to use them??
    I know edits are annoying, but please read before arguing with me :')
    edit: before you say anything, I'm AGAINST using pain on dogs. Is it really that difficult to understand. Don't train your dogs with prong collars. The pain may temporary to get your dog in line, but it is not worth it. Just use treats. Like is it that hard to lave some basic human decency, and to not use force? Also especially don't use the prong collar regularly, as it could leave marks, bruises, scars, etc.
    Another edit: I'm not trying to argue anymore, so either take it up with someone else or scroll, please. thank you.

      A lot of trainers use them in TRAINING bot active wear. Like how you break a horse by riding them.

    the fact that they said holding the prong against their neck for three seconds “hurt” is hilarious to me. i YANK mine on my own neck, harder than they’re ever meant to be used on an actual dog, leaving way bigger indents on my skin than in the video, and it still doesn’t hurt 🤣
