    I don’t understand what the confusion is. Here’s an explanation of Broken City. “In a city rife with injustice, ex-cop Billy Taggart (Mark Wahlberg) seeks redemption and revenge after being double-crossed and then framed by its most powerful figure: Mayor Nicholas Hostetler (Russell Crowe).”

    Unfortunately, you can't stream the finals run with audio on FloMarching, so the only way you can watch it now is to watch a recording on CZcams (mine got taken down unfortunately). Erik Lindquist has by far the BEST version that hasn't been taken down.

    For the past few years its been a case of story vs implied story. Both are great but both are drastically different. Some groups prefer one (Pulse, POW, box six shows in general) and some prefer the other(BCP, RCC, RX Etc). Lots of people fight over how one is better than the other, but it shouldn't be the case because both are still telling a story. Watching indoor drumline and the experience you get comes from the execution, not the concept. A gritty dark show is good in theory, but not every dark show is great. Many people wanted Pulse to win because they had a straight forward story(two dads arguing) while many people wanted bcp to win because their show barely made any sense(two dads arguing). Its a simple choice of apples and oranges, both good and different. In the end the judges preferred the oranges. BCP simply put beat pulse on the execution. Next year we'll see what direction people go, but its still going to be good either way. Pulse will probably stick to their formula, and so will BCP, and thats fine, we still get great emotional shows, and if they don't provide, we have like 20 other groups that are pretty heckin good.
    Btw congrats on the win, and breaking the record on the way as well. It was amazing to be able to watch the first show at the preview to watching it end at the UD.

    While I have to say I'm a sucker for a show that can successfully convey one single meaning, you're right on man. I'm majoring in English to become a teacher, and people will get caught up in what the stories are "trying to say". But if you really pay attention and take in a piece of art, you can take so many things away from it... and often times its the meaning we construct for ourselves that carries the most weight. I enjoy both styles of shows, but today I think I gained a little more appreciation for those shows like yours, which focus less on communicating a message and more on allowing the viewer to interpret their own.

    I’ve been watching broken city since it first became broken city which was my freshman year of high school and loved every single show. Mike is actually my instructor at my high school and we ask him questions about what Broken city’s shows and what is it about. Watching this video actually gave me the idea of multiple ideas or thoughts about each of their shows and especially this years show and I know see that show in so many different possibilities. Thanks Kyle for opening my eyes.

    After taking your advice and watching the show, the show is better than I imagined, being as it was my first time seeing it. It is more like reading a poem and trying to understand the authors thoughts on the work. Why the author used the words used and the formatting. I believe the show be about a depression. How the person has lost their purpose and meaning in their life do to some kind of event. The show was the struggle of fighting with depression and in the end of the show, the person looking back on a fond item or memory, and that’s what gives the person something to live for and for light to be brightened once again. But that’s my own interpretation of the Show. Hats off to the visual director and the composers, as well as the instructors and performers that made it happen.

Great Show Congrats.

    Totally makes sense to watch this video before watching the show and I watched it on CZcams (don't ask me about legalities lol) right before I watched this video. But yea, I was guilty of looking for what the show meant....but it is TOTALLY cool that we have a personal and individualized experience. Just right now I'm seeing there's so much controversy about wanting concepts they can understand...very similar to how we as humans are looking for the TRUTH (or universal truths) and the answer to everything. Nobody likes being kept in the dark and there is safety in having knowledge so we naturally seek it out. Sorry....this show, like life, is not that simple ;) Thanks Kyle! Great stuff as always!

  • @alexwaynemiller
    @alexwaynemiller Před 5 lety +1

    Communications major here (I know, lame...) and one of the most interesting and intriguing things I've studied is the concept of "Sometimes it's not what you say, it's how you say it." Sometimes the "how" is more important than the "what".

    • @adamwattsmusic
      @adamwattsmusic Před 5 lety +1

      And the "why" more important/foundational than both the "what" and the "how"... with "when" (SCPA and WGI 2019) being significant, but less so. If the "why" is honest/truthful/sincere (for the core creatives) then it will continually drive the "how" and informs the "what" at every stage of the process. IMO the more this kind of "why-focused" process is adhered to, the less manipulative, pretentious, insecure, trendy, (and especially) self-conscious, the end result (the final show). It's an inside-out process... look in, bring it out... trust instincts... and see what happens (which can be as scary, messy and frustrating as it is exciting, fulfilling and cathartic). I've noticed this process results in a more polarizing response in people... they either love it, hate it or are passionately disinterested. All totally valid responses. I've also noticed that this process tends to accurately (and naturally) reflect the temperament, tastes and psychological profiles (and idiosyncrasies) of the person/people creating the work. When it comes to Broken City, I'm as intimately involved as I am totally outside of the creative process... and my relationship to it all is pretty fluid and constantly morphing... not only from show to show, but along the way throughout the creation of each show. It's really cool to see you guys reacting to it all and interacting with each other about it. I also really appreciate the perspective Kyle shared on this video............ I gotta come out to Dayton one of these years.

  • @Dwightt101
    @Dwightt101 Před 5 lety +5

    Well here’s my understanding of it, when I looked up the word “cede” it meant to give up power or territory, and based on previous shows they usually involve some sort of relationship between people. So after hearing let you win so many times and seeing the flags go up at the end my guess is that it’s about when you’re in a relationship and things are heating up it’s ok sometimes to let your partner win for the betterment of the relationship. Idk tho

    • @oumondragon
      @oumondragon Před 5 lety +3

      Not far off from the truth. Cede(in my interpretation) is about family and the relationships you have with family. Throughout the show you see your family fighting(whenever the sound isn't mic'ed, ie the bass drum accel. Feature at the beginning and ending of the show) and you try to avoid that by remember old and better times(ie the music box). But in the end they're still your family, so no matter what you'll let them in, you'll cede to them.

    • @oumondragon
      @oumondragon Před 5 lety +2

      Fall(the 2018 show) was about the relationship between two people, this show is about the relationships in a family. Both connect in the same way though. Fall is about how even after a break up you still feel for that person, Cede is about how you can't replace family because your bound with them for life pretty much. Whatever this trilogy ends up being will be interesting. Its not telling a story like bloom did, but more so telling anecdotes about a similar topic. Whatever the case, both shows will still be interesting to discuss for years to come.

    From what I've learn it was about Family. But the show was design to have little to no story. The idea was to have each member be able to connect to the show and be more personally invested. They wanted a show for people to enjoy watching and find their own way to connect to it. Like a piece of art you may never know what the artist was thinking when it was being created but the beauty of the art is what matters that most.

    To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Broken City. The meaning is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of complex polyrhythms most of the music will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Mike Jackson’s artsy outlook, which is deftly woven into his compositions - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of the music, to realize that they're not just complex- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Broken City truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the value in Mike Jackson’s typical isolated section solos with ascending and descending ruffs which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Adam Watts genius unfolds itself on the gymnasium floors. What fools... how I pity them. 😂 And yes by the way, I DO have a BCC Hand tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.

    So, I decided to watch the show after this popped up on my notifications. Show concept doesn’t seem terribly hard to follow, but that being said, I feel like your explanation is the opposite of what we see in competition. Groups often times stray away from cookie cutter concepts because of the backlash they receive from judges. I can think of a handful of cookie cutter conceptual ideas from corps like bluecoats, scouts, regiment, and crown that were decimated by the blue devils just ramming notes down your throat with no direction at all. Although y’all’s show was great, I’d say most concept shows are pretentious and only looking to please judges instead of crowds.

    This feels like a cop-out. Unpopular opinion, but BC was just too vague this year. Spine was amazing, Fall was almost as good as spine, but Cede... It had amazing moments that moved me, but good art should be able to be interpreted and discussed and have a meaning behind it. It has a central feeling or focus that is explored, and from there people can interpret and have their own personal experience. It has to have direction, a base. And Cede just didn't have that for me. Still a good show that earned first this year.

    • @kyletsuchiya1842
      @kyletsuchiya1842 Před 5 lety +10

      This show does have an intellectual storyline behind it and should be interpreted and discussed - I don't want me abstaining from sharing my interpretation to discourage people from talking about it. My goal was simply to encourage people to watch the show differently than they might watch other shows in order to get the most out of it.
      I didn't want this to feel like a cop-out or like I'm defending the Broken City show this year - I definitely don't feel the need to do that. If you genuinely got nothing out of the show this year, I totally respect that... that is your experience with the show, and I appreciate you sharing that respectfully.
