That's the sad thing, Manuel had flashes of brilliance which fooled the Bills into giving him more chances than he deserved. When he was on, he was pretty damn good. Unfortunately when he went cold he was worse than awful. Same with Fitzmagic and Losman before him.
Kind of sums up our Bills in general over the last 20 years. We were rarely AWFUL awful, just mediocre enough to give the fan base false hope that we were turning a corner after every 6-10 or 7-9 season while in reality we probably should have just totally tanked in one or two of those seasons.
Thank God we eventually landed Josh.

Your analogy with Derrick Henry and Dion Lewis is a bit flawed. Dion Lewis was a very good RB and very comparable to Derrick Henry at the time, whereas Toby Gerhart was nothing like T.J. Yeldon. In fact, Tennessee had to give Dion Lewis the ball in most situations because Derrick Henry was having a lot of trouble running the ball for positive yardage early in his career. He was almost becoming a bust. He later corrected the way he ran the ball. My point is that Toby Gerhart is nowhere in the class of Yeldon, Henry or Lewis. If I was the coach of the Titans, I would have no problem handing the ball to Dion Lewis in Lieu of Derrick Henry. I would confident that both could score.

I LOVE this series but this is a video that should never have been made, for the simple reason that the Jags did NOT run the same play four times. In a dumbed-down world where people actually watch ESPN and only know the players who they use in video games, sure, all runs are the same. A run is a run is a run. Except that in reality that is not true at all. The Jags called 4 different plays here.
1st down. Offset I. 2 TEs. TE in motion left to right. Straight rule blocking. Play goes to the 1 Hole.
2nd down. Offset I. 2 TEs. TE in motion left to right. Straight rule blocking. Play goes to the 2 Hole.
3rd down. Balanced formation - 2 TE Split. No motion. Straight I backfield. LG Pulls outside left. Counter blocking. Play goes to the 5 Hole.
4th down. Balanced formation - 2 TE Split. No motion. Straight I backfield. LG Pulls across the formation to the right. Counter blocking. Play goes to the 4 (or arguably the 6) Hole.
Each of these plays is designed to probe a different place in the defense. Each of these plays requires different skillsets for the offensive line. Each of them is likely to face a different defense. Statistically, the odds of getting 1 yard on any one of those plays - even factoring in that Gerhart is a pedestrian back - is at least 80%. With 4 tries the probability of scoring a TD becomes 99.84% by running the ball 4 times from the 1. Even if you think the play only has a 60% chance (an absurdly low estimate), you'd still have a 97.46% chance of getting a touchdown on one of those 4 plays. 40%? Now we're into stupidly unrealistic probabilities. Go take a look at the odds of getting 1 yard on 1-yard-to-go scenarios. I'll wait. 40% really doesn't even merit discussing. Yet even if the odds were only 40%, given 4 tries you STILL have over an 87% chance of scoring a touchdown. I'll take those odds every time.
I get that watching our teams fail in situations like this is maddening. Chalk it up to bad luck or great defense, or even chalk it up to home-team blinders, but this is not a dumb decision.

Why call a play that the kid selling popcorn in the last row knows is coming? Any Offensive Coordinator who calls a run up the middle on first down should be fired on the spot. A run up the middle is a wasted down and shouldn’t even be in the play book.
