- If you want non touristy things to do in London how about a delightful walking tour of Primrose Hill, one of London's most splendid places to visit in London outside the centre. One of the most serene and beautiful neighbourhoods in London. Joolz (that's me) is a Londoner born and bred and loves to show people around and tell you his personal problems too (if you'll listen).

Julian McDonnell, your favourite London Guide and tourism film maker, starts at Chalk Fram Station where Madness took the photo for the cover of Baggy Trousers. Chalk Fram is also the location of the Winchester Club in Minder.
From there he takes you over Chalk Farm Bridge and down Regent's Park Road and into the village of Primrose Hill which has many cafes.
Then over Primrose Hill itself, which features in H.G. Wells War of the Worlds and donw towards Cecil Sharpe House, the Regents Canal and ultimately ending at The Landsdowne Pub.

@@aalexjohna What did i do to offend them?
Hat envy , great video as always :-)
There is another guy who does London videos who managed to get on Amazon prime. You are in a different league to his ones . I don't know if he was approached or if he approached them. Have you looked in to that ? I watch a lot of travel type documentarys and I must say that you'd be perfect for a TV show doing this or something similar . I think you're great.
@@IntoTheWhite04 Thanks. I know. I agree. Been trying for years. I actually don't know what you have to do to get onto these things. It's beyond belief. I sort of gave up because I think they aren't actually interested in one's ability. I think it's all who you know or being in the right place at the right time.
I learn so much about London from watching your very informative videos!
Thank you sir.
DoubleDeckerAnton Hear hear!
Me too.. Really appreciate this guy loads
@@MiMi-dc9qs Hope you're not out of time to continue waching, are you?
I do so agree. Please stop saying "who cares". All of us who follow you do!
English Country Dance was once the social dance in North America. It died out in a lot of places in the mid 20th century, but has returned. Most larger Canadian cities have English Country Dance events.
The Rolling Stones had their "Between the Buttons" Album photo shot on Primrose Hill after an all night recording session....and Paul McCartney, spotted a mysterious man who was just behind him on the hill one early morning (after an all night Abbey Rd session) who suddenly disappeared not to be seen anywhere,...and wrote "Fool on the Hill" inspired by that experience....
Down at the Camden Lock area is Dingwall's, a very iconic punk bar which hosted legendary bands during the 70's-early 80's.....Also, the Roundhouse could be seen nearby, another iconic venue, which hosted bands from the Doors to the Ramones. The Clash had their rehearsal space just around the lock too (cover on an album photographed there too).
Perhaps you could make a Part II version of this area,....omitting the Movie Stars and Victorian Era chaps and focusing on Rock n' Rollers (although you did mention 'Madness'!).
I was a 20 year old American lad who spent the Spring & Summer of 1980 staying a block away from Chalk Farm Station....it was such a memorable time, I found myself wanting to know more about the area for years later.....I wish I'd knew then what I've learned from your video.
Your videos just get funnier and more entertaining. They are tailor made for LWT, Thames or whoever covers that region these days. Why hasn't one of the TV channels signed you up? Have a word with your agent. There's nothing on regular TV that comes even close to what you are producing. Keep it up.
Alas, I have no idea what one has to do to get on TV. I mean, they have whole film crews and I do these on my own except for Simon filming sometimes.
Jeff White I agree Joolz should be on TV, he is brilliantly entertaining plus all the historical information Joolz talks of about the different areas and people is so interesting.
Joolz Guides - London History Walks - Travel Films
I think you could have a show on the American TV stations known as PBS “Public Broadcasting Station”
@@AvaT42 AND--there is no better place on earth, with so much history to see and comment on. What a colossal gaff, to overlook such a TV perfect presenter too.
You never mentioned the enterprise pub that used to be a folk club on the 1s floor in the early 1960s where an unknown Paul Simon used to play.
You nailed it again, it's amazing how much there is to be learned about London and its history.
It's an inexhaustible provider of topics
Woman in early 60's here who got the biggest kick of you country dancing and singing those folksy lyrics. NEVER stop!
Excellent as always! I can't believe all the things you remember from childhood, like all those school children's names and your dance steps! This is a wonderful area of London! You're so talented.
My mates dad wrote, in part, Minder. His name was Tony Hoare, sadly he has passed away now.
Wit, history & charm, all wrapped up in a package called Joolz. ;-) Love the videos, thanks!
Thank you Mike. I quite agree!
@@Joolzguides Hello,
What does it mean " wit"?
@@natalya6091 People being funny and jolly.
Thank you Joolz!! Wonderful video. I wish I could afford to be a patron but I'm broke all the time. I enjoy your videos though tremendously. I'll never get to London except through your very entertaining films. Thanks!
Thanks Joan. Not at all, don't worry about that. It's lovely for people just to say thank you. I'm glad you like them. The patreon is just there as an option... It all adds up!
Yesssss same here.... Unfortunately, anyway thanks....
I must say it's a huge nostalgia kick watching your great videos now that I'm stuck in a godforsaken part of the north, ensconced in the mountains and beyond the reach of civilisation! The Gloucester Road segment was particularly nostalgic as I spent much of my time in the early nineties using the facilities at the London Film Co-Op. Happy days
Really enjoyable. My youngest is doing "A Tale of Two Cities" for A Level. I now need to find a way to use "Bicester Times, Worcester Times". First class Dad joke.
I stole it off Richard Osman
Alan Mac, I read your comment first. But when I heard Jules say it, I almost hurt myself rolling my eyes!
Every video is informative, entertaining and binge watched..."Argh one more video won't hurt" he says at 1am. Great work Joolz!!! Keep up the good work.
Your videos, not only teach me why the names, or historical events happened, and show me beautiful parts of London, but they also make me laugh. You are a very nice, intelligent, and funny person! Thanks a lot!
I went to Primrose Hill school and it was anything but foreboding. My memories of it are warm and full of love.
Yes, I actually like it really. I was always jealous that yours had more than one floor! Ours was a bungalow. It's just the red brick evokes the era, that's all I meant. I was being a bit over the top really...just blabbling my mouth off. Sometimes it's best to say nothing.
Thank you for all your interesting video Joolz.Appreciate all your hard work
Thanks. I'm glad you like it. It took a while!!
There is a bit more to the name “Chalk”. The chalk strata underneath london was shallow here and stored water under “Artesian pressure” and was a source of fresh water for London in the old days.
Then, in modern times, London sourced its water supply from further away.
The way you present London is timeless and a sweet refresh , really enjoy 10:14 parliament hill , every time i was going there it was an uplift of feelgood and a perspective adjustment for my Londoner life . Kudos to the cameraman by the way .
Thanks for the nice sunday stroll. Cheers!
Well... it poured down for a while but a typical English day
We spent most of yesterday binging on joolz videos, these are great and bring back stacks of memories.
Chalcot Crescent was also the location of Tara King’s flat (the final partner of John Steed in the 1960s TV series “The Avengers”).
Excellent shows Joules, Keep up the great work you are doing. I thoroughly enjoy all your videos podcast which bring light hearted jocularity and a great deal of knowledge of London and its history. Excellent!,
Fantastic as always, thank you
Hi Joolz ........................We visit London next week ...............Yippeee . We will use your excellent guides to visit places of interest, if we bump into you the Pints are on us !!!!!!
larry Simon,
You should hire Joolz for a tour. I am sure it would be great fun.
Cheers....That's very kind. I seem to get a lot of free pints these days!
I first heard of Primrose Hill when I read Dodie Smith´s "A Hundred and One Dalmations", for it is here that Pongo and Perdita barked out the news of their kidnapped puppies during the Twilight Barking. Very romantic stuff.
You always cheer me up on a Sunday, great video Joolz...
Must be all my tomfoolery.
And me on Saturday, too.
Love this video Joolz! Your knowledge of London always amazes me. We didn't get to meet up last Autumn but I will be back in October and will definitely be booking a walk about with you!! keep the videos coming
This was a particularly particular romp, I must admit. Flashbacks. Improvised chit chat. (Your cameraman seems especially interesting and witty.) Clever adverts here and there. As I say, a romp.
Simon is cool. He is in my Sicily film quite a bit too.
So many place around there. Often when you show a street, I remember a friend, client, a girlfriend who used to live there.
Primrose Hill reminds me of the blur song "for tomorrow" . And blur always remind me of London and the SE
You always amaze, Joolz! What a memory.
Wow Primrose Hill is lovely!
It certainly is. Lovely in the summer too
Hi Jools, great videos, entertaining and informative. Nice job!
Another really interesting guide, it's amazing how he remembers all those facts
I do make some mistakes sometimes
Entertaining, enjoyable & informative always learn something! Really loved this, thank you! 💖Take care!
I'm so glad.
Thanks for all the helpful LDN content Joolz
That's ok. I guess someone has to do it.
Oh my god you included Jose Rizal, i never would have known! Now i can go visit next week for my trip to London! Thanks Joolz!
5:00 The tale of two cities joke was very well executed!
What a joy watching this video. Excellent job
I'm really enjoying your videos, I too love Columbo! My favorite episode is Any Port in a Storm
As a ex londoner now living in New Zealand i really enjoy your videos especially the one on waterloo i was born in Roupell street and you stood outside the very house no 40. Also lived in Brixton and loved that one to,keep up the good work cheers Peter.

I'm a Londoner, and I'm learning loads, guvner.
Oh watching this video in April 2020 and we are in lockdown - you’re physic! So much information/knowledge. Thanks for sharing!
Bravo Joolz...I enjoyed !!! Thank you, big hug for you!
Thank you again.
Love ur vids!!!! Making a trip to London in September!!!
I love all the interesting information you share! Thanks Julian, I adore all your video's :)
Thanks Melly. I've noticed you've seen a few of them!
Thanks for the tour. Really enjoyed it. Loved the music.
That's Carradine's Cockney sing along!
I think you've rekindled my love for London with your videos. I knew about Chalk Farm station being the Madness album cover never knew about the Winchester club though so thanks for that . Primrose Hill was also the place they shot the album cover for their Rise & Fall album & one of 100 or so of my favourite Madness songs on there is Primrose Hill which is the closest to poetry Madness ever came. Incidentally as an Idea they did an excellent album called "The Liberty of Norton Folgate" maybe a video on that part of London?
I've got that album, it's very good.
I used to live on that street- the Adelaide Road, and my station was Chalk Farm
I love all ur videos, Jools ♥️
Well done, Sir! Thank you.
Particularly good one this
Funny informative a joy to watch. Whenever I am in London I see things you have covered!
aww joolz i enjoyed your lil song and dance, yes yes recreate it, that would be so much fun!! bring back the good ole times!!
Haven't done that dance in 30 years
Great as always....nice 1 Joolz 👍👍👊👊
Thanks again!
I absolutely love your reviews of London and surrounding, you are so knowledgeable thank you I went to London in 2005 and wish I had known all this then even though I did visit a few places you mentioned and stayed in Camden and Kentish town went to three pubs you mentioned I missed out on a lot
Must visit this part of London on my next trip. Thanks for a great video 😊
Yes, it's a nice neighbourhood.
For some reason Im always thirsty at the end of a Joolz video.
Another splendid delight, splendid indeed young man
Another excellent video! thanx for posting
Thanks...looks like i need to do a DR Who one.
Hubby and I used to go country dancing in Cecil Sharp House, lovely to see it and PrimroseHill as well
Thank you thank you thank you for the Jeff Wayne's musical bit. One of my favourites. Still having goosebumps hearing Richard Burton's prologue.
But you are also pretty charming citing the lines... 😂
I'm no Richard Burton.
There's a little town outside of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania named Pitcairn. Always interesting to see the connections of old and new.
Love all the folk songs, dance moves and rhymes😀👍
I've got the moves like Jagger
NOooooo...I really don't like the middle class sing a longs throughout the great videos.
I've been searching for ages for more information about Primrose Hill. I walk round there more or less everyday. Thank you for the excellent documentary. Subbed, my good man!
Thanks! I've got quite a few other films about the area too.
Jules is at his best in this video.
Good man Jools
A jolly wheeze
Lovely, Joolz, I learned a lot. But you missed my friend Iolo Morganwg, who has a plaque on the ground at the top of Primrose Hill. He invented the notion of the Welsh as Druids who sang songs and had an Eisteddfod at Stone Henge -- he did it all on Primrose Hill, bless him. We want not just film stars but your definite weirdos!
I saw the druids up there once actually. yes, I forgot to include that. Poor show by me.
Iolo Morganwg was a nutcase !
I guess he was really following William Stukely, but Stukely, not being Welsh, couldn't be as foreceful as Iolo Morganwg.
Have added Minder to my watch list. Another joyous video, especially the dogs commentary on the parish marker.🐕💃🤭
Minder is brilliant and so is The Sweeney
Thanks 😊
absolutely mad, loved it.....!
You are a bloody genius. How ever do you learn all this stuff? I am onto number 32 of your blogs. Wonderful stuff. Real entertainment. Thanks Joules! Greetings from Uganda.
bloody brilliant stuff
Love these vids you are funny 👍
Wow, learnt something new about Rizal!
Your memory is stupendous sir!
You honestly deserve way more subscribers!
I get strangely excited everytime I'm notified another of your videos has been uploaded! :D
Oh, you should click the bell and it will notify you every time!
@@Joolzguides I have. That's what I mean! :D
Yes we did country dancing at our primary school too. I was very keen and even went to the after school club where Mrs Wetstone put records on the record player and Mrs Brindley did the calling and kept us all in time. Ah, innocent times 😇
Yes, Mrs Redfern put the records on for us.
Yet another classic, dear Joolz. Well played!
I'm growing more eccentric as time goes on
Aren't we all, dear Joolz, aren't we all, lol!
Love it! :)
Cheers!
Yet another cool trip.
Down memory lane...
Absolutely absorbing video! (I shouldn't have a binge-viewing party of your wonderful videos, because soon I will have seen them all, but they are so addictive!!)
enjoyed our informational stroll thank you from Tennessee USA
Gosh...glad you're watching so far away
Really enjoyed your poetry selection from primary school. Your teacher must have been excellent, giving a gold star and great comment for what was actually quite insolent from you, his student. I'm certain you appreciate him now.
He was excellent. Everyone's favourite teacher.
Incredible view of the London skyline. I'm hoping to visit London in the summer, if I can I am so heading to Primrose Hill
You should have much more people who like and subscribe your videos!
Yours are the best!

Cheers Tim. Drop me a line and we'll see if I'm around!
thanks for the tour interesting!
Cheers. Yes, I have many more if you're interested..check out my others!
Love your poem.
I've just recently discovered your videos, and after watching a couple of them I subscribed, they're so funny and informative. I'm from the North of England and I've worked in London a couple of times over the years, I just love the vibe, and the place fascinates me, but when I've been there I've never really had the time to explore, so that's why I'm loving your videos so much. So far I've only watched a few, and I'm really looking forward to watching them all, in fact I'm finding them quite addictive. So if ever I find myself heading on down there for a break, I'll be sure to check out your private walks, that could be a right hoot...so toodle pip and tally ho, I'm off to watch another show
