THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for doing the Home Alone house. This is my favorite house of all time. I wanted my house to look exactly like this after seeing the movie. It evokes the most cozy, warm, content feeling everytime I see it. It was genius.
I couldn't agree more. It is the ultimate Christmas house.
@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane where’s the deleted scene of Catherine Catherine putting ornaments on the Christmas tree
I 💯 agree

I first watched Home Alone when it was released here in the UK in 1990. Then watched it with my daughter late 90's when she was 9 until she was an adult. Now I watch it with my grand daughter. Its a staple in our home through-out Christmas.
Aw! Love that. Great tradition pass down. I bet you're not alone.

That was a nice holiday gift for us to enjoy. Wonderful, as always. My take on why we respond to this house is that it is traditionally decorated. Made back in the days when people weren't afraid of colour and didn't prize banal, empty and sterile spaces like the magazines seem to feature now. It's a house that's warm, cheerful and cosy. Bravo to Mr. Muto!
Yes - Bravo to Mr. Muto! You're right, it's nice to see rooms full of color.
Agreed.
Not just magazines. I scrolled through a list of CZcams Christmas decorating videos yesterday and was astonished at how many women decorate in all white with metallic accents. No color. I had a hard time finding any videos that used Christmas colors.
I cannot stand the gray, light woods, white tile and concrete, give it maybe 15 years and people will be ripping out that stuff and putting color back in as trends cycle back again
@@creepydoll2872 It's already been 15 years and colour is back in, I'm pleased to say. Only people who don't know any better think neutrals are still in. They are behind the times.
As a kid whose idea of doodling in class was drawing floor plans, I’ve always appreciated that this house’s layout matched the exterior. It drives me nuts when I watch a movie or show and the room layout clearly doesn’t match the exterior shot of the house. Great video, I subscribed to your channel half way through
Sounds like we share a similar passion.
Same here!
Same, the sitcom The Nanny drove me crazy haha, I hope this one will get covered, it’s a tough one
Like the Golden Girls house interior in no way matched the outside.
You’re absolutely right about this movie taking folks back to a simpler place in their life. I appreciate the movie more and more as I get older, because I remember being in the 7th grade when it premiered. It reminds me of watching it as a kid with my family. I didn’t realize at the time the amazing memory we were making.
Love that.
I have made other homes too. You can see all of the other TV and movie home tours I've made here: czcams.com/users/MarinaCoavideos?view_as=subscriber
All of the details John offers here absolutely fascinate me. One could swear the movie was shot inside the actual house. I'm just blown away how they were able to recreate this masterpiece home so meticulously - even right down to the exterior views outside the windows and front door. You guys talked about how this movie home strikes such a nostalgic cord with people. Everything you said I completely agree with, but I would also posit that the selection of the McAllisters' home (a home worth defending) prior to filming probably plays a big role in how it connects with the audience. All the wonderful nostalgia aside, for me, this home screams Americana. Perhaps it represents the "ideal" warm, comfortable home many of us were able to spend Christmas in when we were growing up. From the wallpaper to the Chippendale dining room suite, to the warm fireplace, to the portraits on the walls, and especially all the interior colors - it all reminds me of grandma and grandpa's house, or even the home on Happy Days. It just has that "Americana feel" to it. It seems like set design is such a science. Good set designers, location scouts, and story writers seem to know what home environment we are going to connect with, and the Home Alone house is no exception. If nothing else, it is SO Christmasy! Thanks for another lovely tour!
Love all your thoughtful comments. And I agree - the choice of house is a big reason it resonates with so many people.
I love how you said “all great design is personal”. It’s so true. Once someone takes all the personal out of their home the colors all go, the photographs, the little collectibles etc. it takes all the life right out. This we end up with boring greys and whites. Peoples lives are not lived in grey and white. There’s nothing wrong with making your space a place that makes you happy. If that means a purple sofa will do that, then go for it! So many people are worried about what others will think, they forget to enjoy life.
I love everything you said! I have 2 shows on this channel. One is tours of TV and movie homes, but the other one is called Cinematically Inspired Design. You might like that one. It's all about making our home design personal. Look for the ones that mention storyboards in the title. Those are the episodes that go into detail on how to do that. Thanks for taking time to leave a comment.
My grandmother's sofa was upholstered in purple velvet. It was beautiful.
In architectural terms, it's called an "enfilade" when each room opens into the next, giving you a glimpse of each.
Thanks for adding that info.

You honestly deserve some sort of special award for this, and all of your works. They are so incredibly detailed, they are astounding. Shadows, reflections, light switches, plugs. You miss NOTHING. The wallpapers are perfect. That said, I must have watched this movie ten times before it occurred to me the entire house is decorated in Christmas colors...and even many of the clothes are Christmas colors! How immersive and creative and clever! Brilliant, brilliant work, Marina. You are genius!
Thank you so much. It's a labor of love.
I have watched this movie all my life and it never occurred to me that the whole house was decorated in Xmas colors, lol, that shows how observant I am!
An award? For what? Describing very obvious details about a house? Come on. Don't be so dramatic. Don't get me wrong, its a cool video, but I don't get your comment. Are you trying to be complex or something?

I just watched Home Alone. After watching this prior, I had a new appreciation for this house. It has always been one of my favorites!
I love when that happens. Thanks for sharing.
One of my favorite Christmas movies. I didn't know that the house was only used for exterior shots. What great tour! Once again you scratched the itch in my brain regarding this house that only you could do ❤ 🎅🎄🎁
Thanks. I had always thought before that parts of the movie were filmed inside too.
Another wonderful tour by Marina Coates. I didn’t want it to end. A very large home but marina made sure we saw it all.

@@teresaskinner5401 Merry Christmas to you too!
This was wonderful! I had no idea the interior scenes were done at the high school! Also, Mr. Muto, you did a fantastic job of creating the feel of a North Shore house in the late 80's/early 90's. I lived in the area at that time and your design is spot on!! Love the back staircase and laundry chute. So many homes take them out during renovations.
I didn't either. I had read articles that had made it sound like some of it was filmed inside.

I don't remember much of this film since it was so long ago I saw it, I know I saw the first two. They were very funny. One thing I did remember was the beautiful house. It's the kind of house I have always wished to live in. Thanks for showing us these lovely homes.
I love this movie home too!
Thats incredible that they matched the vibe of the outside of the house to that of the constructed interior that was built offsite. Who would have thought
And you can tell. Often with TV houses the exterior and interior bear no resemblance. I think it's part of what makes the home feel real.

His contribution was everything! I was beyond thrilled when he agreed to do the interview. 😊
"Home Alone" is one of those movies you can watch any time of year and enjoy it. I last watched it in 2014 with my sister's family and we laughed ourselves silly. My niece- who was eleven at the time- was laughing herself senseless when Marv (Daniel Stern) screamed bloody murder with that tarantula on his face.

😊 I like looking at it that way.
I went to a fancy prep school (my parents worked and sacrificed to send me, their only child, there). All my classmates lived in houses like this, or even grander, around John’s Hopkins University in Baltimore City. I did many overnights in homes like this AND LOVED IT. I lived in a modest brick duplex. This house resonated with me because it reminded me of my prep school days ❤️.
That would be so fun - to get to see inside of homes like this. Im glad it brought back good memories.

The thing about this house I like and what I like about 1990s set design is its a really nice home but it actually looks lived in and does tell a story about the people living there by the objects the house is filled with. It looks comfortable and lived in while being very stately.

I love all of videos so much because you out so much detail into them, I do not know if you ever take requests, but if you do, I would love to see what the McFly home looked like from top to bottom in “Back to the future Part 2!”
I love getting requests. I read all of them and it helps me when I go to make choices about what home to do next. Thanks.
@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane Anytime! I have always been a movie buff & into pop culture, but seeing the amazing jobs you have
done , you have gotten me into watching shows I grew up watching such as “The Jefferson’s” which is now free on Prime & with the interesting info you have giving on each house, you make me look at shows differently now. I can’t wait to see the new projects you have in store in the near future!
You can see Kevin’s bedroom in the movie. It’s the one with the bunk beds

@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane At last I got see part 2 just now! Thanks for telling me when you uploaded it. You did an amazingly detailed job on these videos. I love seeing the parts of the house that we didn’t get to see & hearing about the scene that didn’t make to film, but I want to say, I would love to see a video all about lightning as you suggested. Because one of my dreams is to be a filmmaker & your videos give me a lot of insight. I was also wondering, do you take requests? Because if you do, I’d love to see you do homes from Three’s Company, Different Strokes, Silver Spoons, Punky Brewster along with the McFly home from Back to the Future as well as the detention room from The Breakfast Club. Did you know the little kid who played Junior in the Problem Child movie, had auditioned for Kevin, but was rejected because he wasn’t right for the part.
I love this!!! Thank you!
Glad you liked the tour!

Love these. Would really like for you to do The Big Valley home.
Someday. I have a long list, but it's on there 😊
Great video. Always liked this house as traditional homes are very appealing to me. It was very cool to see the set photos you were provided with as well. It'd be interesting to hear what differences there were filming in a school verses a soundstage. Normally a lot of things are suspended from the rafters, like lights, catwalks, and ceiling elements. If they didn't have the option here, they would have to possibly engineer the set pieces a little differently.
And not long ago, the real house was sold and so real estate photos of its interior were available. I don't know if you show any in Part 2, but I think it's interesting to compare and contrast with the film set.
Great questions. He went into some of that in the interview. I'll need to include it in part 2.

Thank you 😊

It's like comfort food. 😊

Sensational! that the interior was a built set somewhere else. LOL. I did not know this. Amazing that they filmed beautiful house for exterior scenes and built set for interior scenes (does that mean a family lived in the house?, approved of using the exterior for the film, but had to say no to filming inside because they lived there?). That's one of my favorite things about this movie, is the beautiful architecture of the building and the high end looking interior. I also like the interior of the church in the first movie. And I'm not surprised that the "old" movie he keeps using to scare people off was new and made up for this film. Because real old movies are copyrighted and you cannot use them without permission and you probably can't get permission. Easier to film your own so you have the rights and copyright.
It really was the perfect movie home. A family did live there. I think the plan was to build the interior elsewhere all along.

Marina first I want to say congratulations on your growing channel. I love it here and I hope that it busts out of it seems with new subscribers! And thanks you for getting the production designer!!! I don't know why people don't think of asking set/production designers how to decorate their homes!!! Brilliant idea and it makes sense. I will be sharing your videos in the future.
This house was and is WAY outside of our budget but it is a home I could see myself living in. From the decor I can see that the homeowners LOVE Christmas. The wallpapers remind me of flannel pajamas. Very traditional, New England but with a NY/LI elegance of the North Shore. I always felt as if they were very rich. Funny how I never noticed it until I started watching your videos. THEN I picked up on the decor theme. And you confirmed it via the video.
Suggestion: would you do a patreon where your subscribers could get behind the scenes, a downloadable how to workbook, maybe a one on one consultation (to start)? YOU are so worth it!
Great idea. I'd need to clone myself though 😉
But I have plans for a book.
@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane I am SO SO looking forward to that book!

Mrs C. wonderful wonderful work. I love your work, you've helped an odd ball, (said to me by other's) not feel so odd anymore for being more into the design beauty of a structure and have helped answer questions that had me stumped for years. I have a huge request. The 1996 Danny DeVito movie Matilda, Ms Trunchbull/Ms Honey's childhood house. the name of this beautiful home is called the crank house/Fair Oaks Ranch it's in California, Its was also featured in the movie Catch me if you can(Roger Strong's house), Scream 2 (Omega Beta Zeta Sorority house) and Hocus Pocus (Allison's house interior shots). thanks again for your channel.
I may do the Matilda home someday. I interviewed the Production Designer of that movie and could use some of the interview for the tour. 😊
Thanks for the reply back. Way cool to here the production designers thoughts, I have so many questions. I know you would do a super duper job👍😊

Thank you. Having John Muto giving us those kinds of stories was the cherry on top for me to 😊
I'm a newbie subscriber but I Love your channel. This video is the icing on the cake for the holidays! Thank you! Could you please do a video on the house from the Steve Martin films "Father of the Bride" I. & II.? It's the same house or set in both films but the house is a character unto itself, especially in the 2nd film. I have adored that house since I was little. If I ever win the lottery, I'm building it! Thanks so much! Sending love and best wishes from Memphis, TN. 🎄🎁🎄🎁🎄🎁🎄🎁
I hope to do that home someday. I love it too.

Oh! You and me both. I plan to get it done in 2022.
As always--a fantastic video, both fascinating and professionally detailed, all at the same time.
If you'll permit me to offer a couple thoughts: for me, this doesn't remind me of my childhood. That's not at all a criticism of your comment; I'm just observing that this house and neighborhood were well above our economic means when I was a child. That notwithstanding, it's a charming house and lets me imagine what such a lifestyle might have been. Either way, it's successful at transporting me to another place, and that's ultimately the purpose of a movie.
Second, although I understand the set designer's purpose for the el-shaped island in the kitchen, for me it has a more practical purpose. That kitchen is absolutely massive. (I think I've lived in smaller apartments!) No one in their right mind would want to walk around a 500 square foot room to make a meal. Instead, that el serves as a "return" of space and saves the cook about a 1000 steps, bringing some of the work space closer. Even though this house is nothing like any home I've personally lived in, I always try to insert myself into the space, and I'd treasure that el-shaped island from a functional perspective.
Great insights. Thanks.
NOOOO !!! it wasnt filmed inside the real house ? 😬😬😬 My life has just changed 👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎
Full House wasn't filmed in a real home either. They use sound stages.
Wow!!! Home Alone my fave christmas movie. It has been a tradition to watch this every christmas and I grew up dreaming of living in that house.🥰 Love this! ♥️

I absolutely loved this. Part 1 and Part 2. I have always loved this movie. This was the first movie my mother took me to see when we moved from Wisconsin to Belleville, Illinois. Every Christmas Eve I watch it. Thank you so much. You got a sub out of me.
I'm glad you found the channel. 😊
I love Home Alone. Cool to see the house. Checkout my Home Alone Remake with a twist.
I watched an interview over here in the UK with a lady who lived in the house as a young girl with her family and she claimed they filmed in the home the whole time and she & her family had to crawl round to avoid being filmed🤔 i wonder why she claimed that if it was all filmed in a made up interior
I had the exact same questions. I was so confused. The articles i read had even added details that the staircase to the basement in the kitchen was covered up, so the 2nd set of stairs could be placed over it. I asked John Muto and Dan Webster that. They both said all of the interiors were shot in the school gym. Mr. Muto said maybe because she was a little girl at the time she just remembered it like that. It's a mystery, but both assured me that all interior scenes were filmed in the gym.
