Yes and no. Shaykh Al Akbar (RAA), never advised his followers to abandon the outward path of Islam as means to realising the Truth that he expounded. Quite the opposite, he insisted that they adhere to the Path of Islam. To understand what he is saying intellectually means little - the nafs (or ego to varying degrees) will easily co-opt this understanding and make it a vehicle for travel in the opposite "direction" than that of actual realisation- if the journeying is undertaken outside of the Path. This is not to say the formulaic is exclusive, a seeker can submit themselves to any Traditional Path, but it is to say without the submission to a Path, the journey will yield little fruits. ❤

I was born a muslim and my tongue was taught to say, "la ila-ha il-Allah", meaning, 'no god but the God". I accepted Sufism and my heart was taught to know that 'la ila-ha il-Allah', meaning, 'no god but the God'. Before I was God and God was something else. Afterwards, there was only God and I became something else.
