Nobody sings a sad song like George. He was the all time best and there will never be another.
GOAT
Thanks David for a great morning selection. You're correct, when George sings a ballad you can feel it. The song was written by Leon Payne and recorded by George in 1965. It spent 21 weeks on the Billboard chart, peaking at no 9 Thanks for the reaction
You’re welcome and thank you
Good George song.
I love it when Jones uses his 'woeful' voice. I never considered until now how much influence this song may have had on Johnny Paycheck's 'In Memory of a Memory' and especially Willie Nelson's 'Last Thing I Needed.'
I've often thought of this in relation to Last Thing I Needed but didn't make the Roses comparison till now--although I didn't know that was a Paycheck song, heard the Jones version and the Elvis Costello version.
Also, These Days (I Barely Get By) also by George Jones--- I often mix that song up with this one.
@@BilbusWilbury Actually, you're right: 'Roses' WAS Jones' song. The Paycheck song I was talking about was 'In Memory Of A Memory.' I'll make the correction.
I can’t add anything that hasn’t already been posted. It’s just hard not to give ole George a 10
I was newly divorced. Cooking hamburger helper in my new tiny apt that had one chair in it. As i turned from the stove to the counter the skillet broke all to pieces and scattered all over the tiny kitchen floor........and i crashed to the ground leaning against the cabinets sitting in hamburger helper.........crying, crushed, defeated. Not a good place to be. Took a while to climb out of that awful place in life. This song captures it pretty well. I always thought this song went to far trying to be pittiful. Over the top like. The way the Geezenslaws sing it, it almost has a tongue in cheek feeling so i always liked it more by them.
I wish you'd check out the Geezenslaws.
That’s been one of my favorite songs since I was just a child.
George Jones was the best George thanks for requesting and reacting great stuff
You should listen to When The Grass Grows Over Me George knew how to deliver a sad song without effort
