    Interesting about this Railfan game--the authors use video footage of a line and scroll it like a videotape or laserdisc of old, unlike rendering graphics of the line in polygons like Train Simulator. It does have drawbacks, though; with a prerecorded background, things like signals and switches stay in state, not dynamic like the other games. (In the arcades, back in the 80s, Williams Electronics had a game called "Starider" were you raced a space cycle against computer-generated opponents on a "track" drawn on laserdisc. Ground-breaking at the time.)

      Actually signals *are* dynamic, you just can't see it here because the CTA uses cab signalling. They're present on the two Japanese routes included in the game and are rather obvious because they're just a 2D image pasted on top of the video - sometimes you can even see the actual signal aspect shining out from behind the sprite.

      Too bad they didn't get that wiley red line conductor that would say stuff like, "Scooby-Doo doors closing" or "may the force be with you doors closing" or the classic "I love you too doors closing"

    This is the best video I've seen of the CTA! I used to operate this line in 1960s using some rather ancient rolling stock.

      Man, I envy you for that used to be my DREAM JOB back when I was in Chicago. But now i'm in Phoenix and we have is a shitty tram lol.

    • @lawrencekeesler7369
      @lawrencekeesler7369 Před 9 lety +9

      I was with the CTA a year and a half immediately after college because I sort of wanted to get it out of my system. I really wanted to know how the system worked, and to have a chance to operate the equipment. I worked extensively the Lake Street line with 4000 series cars that dated back to the early 1900s with air brakes separate from the controller using trolleys for surface operations in Oak Park, and with the 6000 series which were all-electric PCC-style controls with a Cineston unified power and braking lever, limited then to the West/Northwest and North/South divisions using subways in the Loop. I wanted to qualify for tower operation, but CTA wanted me to work "switch" which mostly consisted of coupling and uncoupling 4000s with related air brake hoses and power control circuits. I had seen too many in that position who had shortened or absent fingers from misaligned couplers and didn't wish to render myself ineligible for the music career that was my ultimate goal. Though the equipment in Phoenix is radically different I'm still glad to see a return to light rail operations. They had all ceased in Chicago when I moved there in 1958. Street trackage and overhead all over the place but alas, no streetcars.

      @DOLRED Před 9 lety +1

      1960s? That would be the 4000 series cars with the sliding doors. They weighed considerably more than the stock of later years. I rode them them a number of times. Had reversible seat backs and high ceilings. Check Chicago El.org.

    • @lawrencekeesler7369
      @lawrencekeesler7369 Před 9 lety +4

      We used 6000 series on the West-Northwest Division [Dearborn St. Subway; Milwaukee El to Logan Square; Eisenhower Expy. to Des Plaines; and what is now the Pink line to Douglas Park. 4000s were required on the Lake Street line because of the need for trolley poles in Oak Park prior to moving the line to the C&NW embankment. The 4000s took quite a bit of skill to stop accurately, and without a final jerk. We also used 4000s on the West/Northwest, mostly during rush hours.

    Wow, at the beginning that's the old Fullerton station and the old "soliciting" announcement... this game had to be made before 2006. It's strange how they did this here and never made another CTA train simulator game anymore, now we got to rely on Train Simulator mods.

    When my father worked for the CTA as a Ticket Agent he would participate in the Ticket Agent Tie-up. At that event they had the train operator's console with a working control unit on display. I used to enjoy hearing the unit respond whenever you accelerated or braked. It's an experience that I could never forget.

      I'm afraid it only works on the PS3, and is sold only on a physical medium, so no, you can't get it on the PSN.
      You might want to check out another game called "Densha de Go! FINAL", though, which is another game made by the same team. Although it doesn't use real life train footage, it's fun to play and more diverse than this one. Sadly, it's in Japanese (though the amount of text is minimal), and only sold on a CD.

      As best of my memory the engineer was, shall we say a little high.
      It could not have happen at a worst place and it was amazing that more weren't killed.
      The four corners of the Loop are about the sharpest on all the lines.

    The trains are weird. Why are there two stations virtually next to each other? It would take me 30 seconds to walk from one to another. And why are the platforms extremely long? The system also looks old.

    • @chargansmigglesmoo
      @chargansmigglesmoo Před 8 lety +13

      +Bradman175 Given the dynamics of traffic, especially in the Loop, it's much harder to walk between these stations than you'd think. But it's definitely old.
