It’s funny, phish almost had me on his side for the candy debate, but then his own argument about the chocolate cake being called candy cake absolutely turned me against him
Chocolate is not (necessarily) candy. Chocolate is a derivative of the cacao fruit which can be made into a candy, but it can also be made into a bitter, spicy, unsweetened beverage (which is actually where chocolate got its name). It can even be an ingredient in a savory sauce to have with meat or vegetables.

As a Brit- chocolate is chocolate and sweets are sweets, in the uk generally sweets are like, gummy bears, or a lemon sherbert(hard sweets) we never refer to chocolate as sweets, and kitkats would be like a biscuit for us too, as a general term

To be fair if its mostly sugar and water/syrup and has a crystal structure it is candy and most American chocolate contains so much sugar so it technically would be candy. But you are correct that chocolate itself is not candy.

Chocolate by itself is not a candy. Even a hersey bar has things added to it (butter, milk, sugar). A chocolate cake is not candy flavored cake although you could have a candy flavored cake that uses chocolate. Phish is right, all those chocolate bars he listed are candy. But Twobold is right, chocolate is not a candy.

If you're gonna argue sugar is core to chocolate being a candy, then what is dark chocolate? Either way, I disagree with the concept that *chocolate* is candy. Chocolate is a part of many candies, and in those instances it is candy because it is a part of a candy, but it by itself is not candy. If you bring a bag of chocolate and candy, and say you're bringing over candy, that makes sense, but if you give someone a pure chocolate bar and call it a candy bar, that's weird.
