  • Seen here at the Gun Hill Road station on the Dyre Ave line is a train of new Kawasaki- built R142A's. It consisted of (South) 7215-14-13-12-7211/7216-17-18-19-7220 (North). This train was used on the #6 Pelham Bay line, but has since been rebuilt to an R188 to be used on the #7 line for future CBTC operations. We see old friends, the Redbirds, still in operation along the Dyre Ave

Normal wear and tear. Mechanically most of the rebuilt Redbirds were in very good shape, right up to their retirement in 2003. The old Redbirds actually picked up speed slightly faster than the R142's. What was hurting the Redbirds is that the Corten Steel on many of them was rusting underneath the paint.

Kevin Bravo Because back then, there were no plans for Flushing Line CBTC. Also, the MTA wanted the R142s on the 2/5 and 4 lines, and R142As on the 4 and 6.
Funny thing was that the 3 was supposed to get the last set of R142s (7071-7180, 1101-1250), but plans changed due to the need of having a uniform fleet at the IRT Yards, and the fact that the 3 was going full-length permanently.
