It is always a pleasure watching Simon doing a repair or modification on something. With no Ego involved he actually ends up with something better. Very entertaining and educational all at the same time. Both boats are coming along just fine. I try to not skip any of your video. Thank you Emma and Simon.
The pipe that take’s the chain to its locker is called a spurling pipe. And your work and finish is excellent a first class job. I hope Gemma’s feeling better.

To finish, you need to seal up the wood edge where the chain passes through.

I’m a huge fan of car body mastic. It’s moisture cured acrylic but cleans up with brake cleaner and when cured it’s good enough to fix kids shoes.
Simon , you continue to amaze me. To work on stainless like that is just pure craftsmanship.
Is there a backing plate under the windlass to distribute the load? You should have epoxied the round fiberglass piece back into the whole in the deck.

A brilliant job on the plate. I missed the part where you seal the core after the cut in the deck. I hope it was just not included in the video because when the wet chain goes wizzing down into the locker, the core is going to get wet. Great watching you two solve boat problems .
The winch looks like it has a doubling pipe but the bare wood deffo needs to be sealed. Having watched Simon & Gemma, I’m sure they sealed the cut wood and fibreglass.

Simon, you never cease to impress me with your ideas and workmanship. I'd say that was a perfect welding and polishing fix... I also have to say I would have tried something like that. Now sure I would have the great results tike you did though. Thumbs Up!
back in the 60s the bodyshop at the garage i worked at used to brasso the sprayed panels after compounding to remove the swirl marks and give a high shine before waxing. before Tcut was invented. so almost the same stuff. nice repair.

Hey Sim, can I assist with a little tip. Our hands shake more as we get older so holding the filler rod at the end closer to the work pice and slowly feed it in and the torch near the head.

I dont understand half this stuff, having never been a boat bigger than a kayak, but none the less, i am completely entertained.
Chain goes down the spurling pipe.
In these situations where you don not want the drill in the hole saw, just cut a template out of a thicker material like plywood that will then hold the hole saw blade in position.

I’ve got a compressed air die grinder. My goodness it guzzles the air. My 2 KW compressor could not keep up. The compressor got given away when we moved house and my air tools have sat unused ever since.

The problem with stainless is that it work hardens. More work more hardening!
I don't know what your chain locker looks like, but it's good to get in the habit of tieing a line to the end of your chain:
To make the end apearent, and so you don't lose it into your chain locker, while disconnected from your anchor.

I hate to be that guy, but, be careful about metal fume poisoning. Welding stainless can be nasty.
Why didn't you strip it down and sort the offending item yes time but save money
I thought Simon could easily have fixed the old windlass as well .
