      Yep that's a big one once they're issued out in training, there was some kid in a different battalion on Sand Hill same time I was in who misplaced his rifle, a civilian employee ended up swiping it and managed to get it off base, HUGE manhunt ensued for it involving the outside LEO's, the dumbasses went and shot it off in their backyard and got caught, needless to say everyone involved got in some serious trouble.

    Had a guy in basic...wasn't cut out for the military life...he wanted out. Well, he had to go see the CSM, I volunteered to go with him, just to get out of the push ups going on in the tire pit. Well, we were walking to the building and the DS was shaking his head. He saw me looking, and I thought I would get yelled at. Nope. He merely said, "The Command Sergeant Major was my DS when I went through basic here. I wouldn't wish meeting him on my worst enemy." I thought he was joking...hell no. This CSM was a fucking behemoth. I'm 6'2...and I had to look up at this godzilla of a man. His pinky could snap me in half. His presence and piercing eyes alone scared the shit outta me. His bark was bellowing, and he got the eerie calmness....told me to wait outside his office. When he came back out, he sent me and the other guy back to have him pack his shit. DS took us back to the dorm for the guy to pack. Only time, during basic, I ever saw the DS act humane.

    Don't get caught "wearing Air Force gloves".. in other words.. don't get caught with your hands in your pockets. You'll get smoked.
    I don't remember actually "sitting down" in the Mess Hall for the first three weeks. You could have all you wanted.. from the time you got it until the time you made it to the exit.
    The Drill slapped the first guy in line when he started taking silverware on that very first trip to chow. "You don't need all that shit. Just take the big spoon." The idea being.. you use it like a shovel to cram chili-mac in your mouth as fast as you can while you're marching toward the door. Meal time lasted about 45 seconds. Later.. they'd let you sit down and relax for three minutes or so. "Times up. Get the fuck out, ass hole."
    One day the Senior Drill gave us a speech. He said that the Army gave him a "new directive." He would no longer be allowed to call us "ass holes".. so.. from that day forward he would call us the "hole between the cheeks of my ass"..

      that was my issue in Marine boot camp, they'd say something to me and I'd look at them as that was the way I was taught and I would get a quick "WHY ARE YOU EYE BALLING ME RECRUIT!!". It was both frustrating and intimidating at the same time. If you have to look for some reason, they say do the "snap look" look real quick ONCE for about half a second and snap right back forward, as long as you just do it once, they generally won't yell at you for that.

    Howdy! Your five examples are dead on. I have one: we were issued weapons and ordered to place them in formation. We were also warned not to let them out of our sight or reach. Suddenly, you have drill sergeants trying to walk away with the rifles. I swear that most of the battery did not know what to do about it. The answer was, strangely enough, simple: would you pass up a chance to boss around a drill sergeant and tell them to return that weapon? It was my finest moment in uniform.

      @mcoleman6893 Před 5 lety +20

      That short period of time between the end of your stay in reception and boarding the bus to basic is when the drill sergeants check you out. It is the same way big cats on the African veldt choose which wildebeest, gazelle, hippo, etc to take down. I feel bad for that young man, but you DO NOT GIVE that school of 🦈 a target because THEY WILL TAKE YOU OUT. Their actions are seen as necessary, weeding out the weak as soon as possible. You want to avoid this happening to you or somebody you care about? Two choices: do not enlist, or prepare for the experience/ordeal. Basic training is about self-management, indoctrination, and shock-and-awe. Lifestyle change? No, it is being powerbombed, clotheslined, and tombstoned on a daily basis for the first three weeks, at least. Regrettably, most recruiters care about getting the signature and not much else. Preparation is up to the enlistees. The delayed entry program is there for you to get ready, and with sources like Chaos, you have full disclosure available. Sorry... didn't mean to preach.

    I once knew a guy who loved to hum while training. Well one day the Drill Sergeants had enough of that, dumped out his wall locker, took out the shelves and stuffed the guy in there. Then the Senior Drill Sergeant dropped a quarter through the cuts in the metal and told him that every time someone dropped a quarter through the slot, he had to sing. Best 4 hours of my life.
    I also woke up one night during basic because I am a really light sleeper. I saw that the guy on fireguard was asleep so I hopped out of bed and was going to go wake him up. As I was getting out of bed I heard something hit the bottom of my bunk. I bent over to see what it was and I saw my Drill Sergeant wearing full face camo and clutching his combat knife between his teeth. He gestured for me to be quiet and he continued low crawling over to the fireguard station. He scared the guy of fireguard so bad that they actually had to call over one of the medics because the guy was unconcious. One of the funniest things I have ever seen.

      Oh yeah, the cadre. They were generally pretty cool. In basic, back in 2007, I actually called a guy "Sergeant First Class" while at the range and it seemed he had no problem with that at all, because that was his rank and he was around a couple of other Staff Sergeants. Hahahaha!

  • @DJTheMetalheadMercenary
    @DJTheMetalheadMercenary Před 5 lety +68

    Bro, you're so on point with this.
    ALWAYS secure your wall locker, several times I was "voluntold" to help the DS's toss the bay, that shizz was ruthless, mattresses tossed down 2 stories to the formation area, all the bedding in the middle of the room covered in foot powder, lotion, shampoo, etc... worst time was the day of the Gas Chamber, so on top of the bay getting tossed, everyone was covered in residual CS-- AND they gassed us in the bay again during the subsequent smoke session.
    Had a guy fall asleep the FIRST NIGHT of firewatch at OSUT, that was a pretty rough wakeup at 0100 haha, he learned fast after that.
    Funniest thing about the chow hall shuffle was when the Drills would mess with you in line, gently bump you in the back of the head with their brown round and try to get you to laugh.
    I'll mirror what Chaos says about "standing out"-- you WILL be made an example of (like spending 2 hours literally playing fetch with a DS's brown round or getting smoked til you puke), or conversely will suddenly bear more weight in leadership by being appointed Platoon Leader that'll double your daily duties on top of the training-- not necessarily a bad thing but you've got to be quick, efficient, receptive, and assertive while maintaining and developing your KSA's (knowledge, skills and abilities).
    Also, when you get your 36 hour pass while still in training, DO NOT bring back contraband!!!!! Ditch the smokes, dip, pornos and everything else before you get back on base-- and there WILL be staff out there in the wild that you may encounter, so be smart and sensible. Holiday leave also applies, we had 5 guys piss hot for drugs when they got back, just shows some people didn't learn much of anything or hold their future in high regard. BE SMART, AND FOCUS.

    • @mcoleman6893
      @mcoleman6893 Před 5 lety +3

      💯 percent nailed the dismount. Red phase trips to the PX result in your bags being inspected, and God help you if you try to slip something past the drill sergeants. As far as off post passes go, there is always one that does not think the rules apply to them.

    • @DJTheMetalheadMercenary
      @DJTheMetalheadMercenary Před 5 lety +2

      @M Coleman Yuuup exactly-- especially during Red/total control phase hah, plus the 36hr pass being in Class B's and no civilian wear, blending in wasn't really an option hahaha. Then there was the malingerers who would ride the medical buses all day hocking dip and candy, couple civilian employees got in some trouble too sneaking stuff in for trainees who paid or bartered intermittently, on the flipside being assigned or volunteering for extra/special duties sometimes came with perks like watching tv on Battalion staff duty, or even better a pizza night at Brigade staff.

      @@DJTheMetalheadMercenary There was one tv in the battery and it had cable. Thank God "Star Wars" was on that month. One thing: I never understood why some got stuck in kp while the rest of the battery was actually learning required skills. Slowed things down a bit.

      @DJTheMetalheadMercenary Před 5 lety

      @M Coleman thankfully KP duty didn't exist when I was in that was all handled by civilians haha, the staff duty stuff I kinda get since we had CQ rotation on the regular anyway between the Platoons, battalion and brigade staff was more cushy. Also thankfully at the time those duties didn't totally contradict any heavy training elements so it was usually a nice break depending the time of day/night it was, for battalion staff you could be at the desk for up to 10 hours if there wasn't anything pertinent going on, rotation usually depended on who was/wasn't on ranges that day or whatever so it ended up being pretty nice.

    I know you always hear about old vets say how tough basic was back in the day. Well i won't :) But either we had a great Platoon or we just did what we were told. Very rarely did we (Platoon) screw up AGAIN after we were corrected the first time. I would always see the other Platoons in our company doing pushups over and over. Sure we did pushups but not because our PLT SGT was pissed off. It was just instincts that we jumped when we were told to jump and listened. We never questioned a damn thing in basic.Wall lockers and Platoon common areas were always squared away. Our Platoon won the Platoon of the cycle ( Best of the Company) One big advice i can give the future Soldiers is when you are on the range with your weapon never screw around and keep your ears open ( Especially with your ear protection on) When they say keep your weapon pointed down range at all times that means ALL times even when the weapon is in Shotgun position ( when the rifle is in a V shape. can't explain it better) I remember the Range control sgt's ( Not drill sgt's they run the rifle ranges) called a cease fire and someone fired 1 round afterwards. They kicked the entire Platoon off the range that day. The Drill sgt wasn't happy because it's his ass that his Platoon didn't complete the tasks for that day. The Marines don't seem to have problems motivating there men sometimes i wish the Army did the same. I forgot to mentions i went to basic in Feb 1982

One private thought it would be a good joke to hide another private's bolt carrier group assembly to his weapon. I dont know how he didnt notice but he put the weapon back together without the bolt. Fast forward to final formation, we had to clear the weapons in clearing barrels done by the Drill Sargents. Im sure everyone can guess the amout of tounge lashing the private had. The entire platoon had to low crawl with the Drill Sargents behind us to find his bolt. They found it on top of his wall locker. I worked as an Instructor at an A.I.T company in the 1970's.Lock your wall lockers was as serious as going Awol.I pulled C.Q one night found two men in the same bay had failed to secure their lockers,and had left parts of their uniform out.I locked the stuff in the broom closet in the C.Q room, next morning the soldiers came around complaining that their gear was missing.I told them what had happened,also that the company commander would return their gear.1SG came in first,said good plan.I reported to CO,brought the offenders in and left.Poor soldiers hated me but damn it was funny.

    My first goal in basic training was to remain anonymous and not draw any attention to myself from the Drill Sgt's. That lasted until the second day when our company was falling out to go to evening chow. I was running past a barracks stairwell at the same time a Drill Sgt was coming down the stairs and turning directly into my travel path. The subsequent impact sent the Drill Sgt's stack of papers airborne and I immediately found myself in the front leaning rest position doing pushups and looking at boots going by while the rest of the company double-timed right past me. Needless to say, I was the last Private into the mess hall that night. 35 years later I still maintain the Drill Sergeant should've checked the area before exiting the stairwell.

    #1 I totally agree. Should more be "don't stand out" dont be the idiot trying to be some alpha guy who is better than everyone. More work and responsibilities are all you get.
    But also dont be a straggler. The screw up. The other side of the coin.
    Blend in.

    I don't remember most of these, but you barely mentioned saying Sir to a drill sergeant, "DON'T CALL ME SIR, I WORK FOR A LIVING!" On a lighter note, in the first formation, we were asked to raise a hand if we had prior service. From there various roles were assigned, squad leader, etc. One such prior service trainee forgot to raise his hand. He ended up driving the ambulance everywhere we marched or ran to. My advice to you if you have prior service, ROTC, etc. don't raise your hand.

    I remember going through, and my one big fuck up (not really my fault, but ya know) I was a casualty in a convoy. That means I had to give up my rifle. I got my rifle back and immediately was horrified that my Acog was missing. I look around for a bit, and to my absolute horror, I could see DS Davis holding it. I had to go ask him for it back, and the dread that filled me....man, I would have rather been walking to the gallows. Fortunately, I was a squared away private, and he only required 100 pushups to get it back, with no other reprecussions. Scariest day in OSUT by far.

    My dad's friend when he was in the Marines back in the eighties He was to be on guard duty for the armory and there was a chair near him and he was so tired he sat down in the chair fell asleep and the sergeant walked up on him yelled His name and my dad friend jumped up with drool hanging out his mouth and Started limping because his leg fell asleep So the sergeant asked Mike if he was Shot Or injured Even though this was on a base in America once Mike said he fell asleep his punishment was to be On some kind of small Naval vessel and clean the latrines for one week and this was a small Vessel because he was sea sick like crazy. He said he never fell asleep at the wrong time ever again.
