This guy has a lot of empathy for people working hard, that’s a sign of a good man
Same here.
You have say that if you want to make money on the country circuit.
Naive as hell, actually
@@alfsmith4936 Implying that Billy is somehow disingenuous? You obviously don't follow the young man.
As a former touring musician who just lost my dad unexpectedly, so great to see Billy recognizing how precious the time is. Tell him you love him! 🔥
I know I don’t know you but I’m sorry for your loss ❤
I’m really sorry about your loss. Prayers
I’m sorry for your loss
I really loved the music when I caught him doing the Dead’s Wharf rat and after hearing how solid and simple he has chosen to remain and how truly tied down to his roots he remains… I’m just becoming a fan for sure!!!
Amen sir ..I still wished I could say it and hear it back.
“The Universe does listen to us, I don’t think we talk to it enough” -Theo Von
we talk to it too much!! We wont shut up long enough to listen
Impatience and not knowing the truth in the now is a lost "super power". Asking to much from the universe with impatience steals other peoples dreams and can destroys lives.

I’m glad someone else got this Lmaoo
Haha yes. He's got some flybys for many.
Theo is unstoppable 😂
And Billy didn't get the joke lol
That was brilliant and Mr. Strings didn't catch it
Billy Strings is a real one, and he deserves every bit of success he’s achieved
Truth
First time I heard Billy was when dust in a baggie was uploaded. Top notch musician.

ME too. I wanna know about the guy in the background!
Half of us are in recovery and the other half are still having fun. 😂
I like to listen to entertainers who work hard, love their families, and appreciate the fans who make their dreams a reality. Seems like a good guy. Him praising his parents is a breath of fresh air. Good on you, Billy.

A lot of respect for Billy Strings for his down to earth honesty
I've done time in a prison work camp in Ionia back in the 1970's from Whitmore Lake MI.
Clean for 40 years.
Had no idea he is from Michigan! Love this guy even more now. Oxy was a problem in almost every poor small town. My whole family besides my youngest brother was addicted to drugs and alcohol. Prison and jail was regular for us. The courts still know our last name. My dad always had giant Marshall amps and sick guitars. He loved bands like Rush, Ozzy, Dokken, Dio, Megadeth, etc. Watching him play was awe-inspiring. My dad and brothers are doing better, and I have a family now. His health has caught up to him, but he still plays whenever he can. He's my motivation to give my children a better life. Billy's story really resonates with me.
Billy is a humble respectful guy. It’s refreshing to see he’s stayed that way even with the success and fame.
This guy is incredible live, you have to see him if you can.
Great knowing some of your story Billy! Thanks! We are all blessed being able to listen to you sing and play.
I've been watching & listening to Billy for about 6-7 yrs now. I've admired his respect for Terry, his father, and for making it a priority to play gigs and now, make an album with him. The story I love best that Billy tells about Terry having to pawn his beloved Martin guitar to pay the bills when Billy was young and then, several years later Billy finds THE guitar online for sale and scrapes the money together and buys his Dad's guitar back and presents it to him gives me chills to this day. Billy, imho, is the best thing to happen in the music business, Period, in the past decade.
Theo is such a chill and good interviewer, they’re always so compelling and different than the typical drivel interviewers normally ask.
Watched Billy play at a ton of venues in MI (state, shorts, bells, etc) One time at Red Mesa in Boyne City with maybe 100 people in the place. I can tell you he has been bringing it since day 1. Stoked to see how many people know his tunes now.
we played at the bowling alley in Escanaba in 81. we were booked for a week, and they kept us for a second week.
How long ago was that

Playing an outdoor concert it’s amazing
Sent this video to my buddy whom I went to college with. He also went to Ionia highschool, first thing he says back is "I know Aaron lol he was in the grade above me" I flipped, thought that was so cool. Loved listening to your story buddy, literally just having a dream and working your ass off to make it a reality. The last line you said about your family, "I just want everyone to be okay" really hit home for me... Because that's all I've ever wanted to. I love it when my friends and family come to me and tell me about something cool in their life or an accomplishment they've had/made. Just puts a smile on my face when other people are happy and doing well 😊❤
Such a trip my intro to billy strings was at a tool concert in salt lake, what a strange combo of musicians. He did a guitar solo with tool and it was excellent!
Yes, he also joined them at their Nashville show which I attended. Like any truly great player he is versatile.
@@charliefoster5862I was there too! First tool show
🙏 Surely someone has uploaded this by now 🙏

My grandparents lived in an area of West Virginia that was affected heavily by opiates, including my grandparents themselves. It was sad to realize that they were as addicted as the people around them. Dont do drugs kids.
I felt that “I play for my life, this is my # survival” I’m a FT muso, dad to 2 beautiful girls, music has saved my life, our life. And I’ve been listening to Billy for a while now, amazing player, singer and songwriter - thanks for a great interview Theo! 🙏
Great to see a professional musician with so much perspective and gratitude. I admire Billy Strings for this.
Billy Strings really seems to be a real one. Love that.
There's a video on CZcams with Billy and two other guys playing four songs in the woods and it's one of my favorite videos of all time. Great set
The mandolin player on that is Don Julin, VERY respected touring and session musician in his own right and a really fun and unique player!
31 and one of the best guitar players ever and still getting better.
As a construction worker that's getting ready to go out and smash all day thank you for noticing Billy strings 🙏💪, might not know it but you're out there with us giving us that music that keeps us going all day💯
Such a fan of Billy! Many of his lyrics resonate with me...
Love you Billy. I feel the same way leaving rural Michigan too. Why me. You deserve all the success. God bless your family/friends and music.
My brother was doing 5 years while Billy was living in Muir. I became a fan of his early on and I just about lost my mind when I realized this years later. I used to drive up there every month and visit...Billy's right, there's not much there besides the prisons, and the town of Ionia is the seat of the county of the same name. Middle of nowhere Michigan
What an inspiring story. I’m a musician too and it’s so true all he said about gigging. All that practicing and hustling and his dad being able to b a part of his shining success-what precious moments!
hard work
+ opportunity always=success
Just found Billy. Seems like a regular guy who has succeeded with hard work and commitment ( and a generous amount of talent of course )- very nice to hear his story. Love his music.
Your content is fresh, keep it going!
Excuse me ma'am, but youre gonna have to go back on theos channel at least 7 years because my mans been putting out content for at least 10 years on CZcams haha
Billy Strings is a legend!! Loved watching him up in Traverse City through the years! We need a Billy Strings/Don Julin reunion!
ive been into billys music for a couple years hes getting the recognition he deserves
I love the Tony Rice, Manzanita T-shirt, and his reference to Doc Watson. Giving respect to the past players.
Keep on giving the world your music, its your gift God bless you Billy
I'm so grateful Billy decided to pursue his passion! 😊
I think Billy is great, hearing him talk about his life makes me think that much more of him. I love his music. Much more success Billy, I will be listening.👍🏻🙂🇺🇸
They made it out cuz of music. Plain and simple. Thank God for music. Thank God for Billy!
Being extraordinarily competent and gifted at your trade brings goodness and value into our world. It is also an inspiration for anyone willing to work hard enough. Whether you lay driveways or pick brilliantly on guitar.
Always enjoyed Billy’s music. Now seeing the moral compass, makes it even better.
Man billy is such a fucking dope dude and Theo and him have great chemistry. Excited to watch the full pod
The simplicity of Billy's mindframe is so earthy and righteous !
I just finished renovating an old farm house in Buladean, NC that Doc Watson used to crash at when he would travel between Erwin, Tennessee and Spruce Pine, NC. Dude used to sit on the porch and play to the birds
God bless the working man. Work is a song. Tell me about it.
Enjoyed this, sit through it all. Thanks for putting it out there.
Nobody gifted this dude a musical career. He didnt win a musical lottery. He made it happen with hard work and dedication. He should never feel any guilt about his success.
Billy strings is one of the best on strings ever
Nice interview thanks 👍
Stoked to hear about recovered addicts ❤
Thanks for the interview 👍❤️
It was very inspiring to me : as I am also a recovered addict who plays guitar 🎸 🎵
Great clip. Thanks man.
Beautiful as hell. Good on ya, Billy. ❤
Billy is the real deal. His huge heart comes through his music and has got me thru some really hard times ❤️
I’m from the uk and like a lot of people heard dust in a baggie on CZcams …..its great to see him as a man fulfilling his music potential 👏🏻👏🏻
Excellent interview!
Never really knew anything much about billy until this vid. Love it. Ty
I was into billy many years ago. I'm so happy that he made it. He's the kids that slipped through the cracks hero. He's the hero of the south. He's the hero we all needed when he came. God did it no doubt. Billy is a gift to many.
He's from Michigan lol. And I wouldn't give the invisible sky wizard credit for Billy' hard work
I used to see Billy in Northport Michigan. He's killing it.
Followed his whole career and have nothing but respect for him. As a guitar player myself I have seen few people who can come even close to his mastery. That he seems like a good guy and a solid hang is all the better.
The I own ya joke is underrated.
billy , be as kind to your self as you are to others. you worked hard and sacrificed to gain success , do not feel guilty for making your life better than it could have been !
Oh, this guy!!!! He does an absolute KILLER version of "Don't think twice, it's alright," by Dylan!!!! Amazing version!!!! Respect! 🤘🎸 💯
I've listened to that cover countless times. It's brilliant.
Almost better than the original dare I say
Nashville people are always ready for you to listen to them tell a great Nashville story
Been listening to Billy for years, sad last time was supposed to come around my area was during Covid and got cancelled, but he's one of the best guitarists playing today, I recommend anyone look up him playing Voodoo Child with Umphrey's McGee to see he isn't just a blue grass player. Turmoil and Tin foil... Wild to think Theo is bigger than him in the mainstream and hasn't been around as long but would love to sit in a room with either of these dudes!
I did not expect to enjoy this interview as much as I did.
What a treat, I’m so grateful to run across this conversation this is the shit! And that Martin guitar WoW where do you find a 1940 Martin Guitar its perfect
Love you brother look forward to seeing you again this year let's go swimming and fishing in the river some time
I got on the Billy Strings train a week ago and I am never fucking getting off 🔥
Theo! Great guest Billy is a legend
Mom with the Lou Reed Transformer t-shirt and you with the Tony Rice Unit Manzanita t-shirt - a great mojo gumbo of influences!
I absolutely have to put some time aside to watch this whole interview.
Two of my favorite people.
Good job youngin
dude, thanks for having Billy on. what a cool ass dude. you have to see him if you haven't, his live show is an experience even if you aren't a bluegrasser
"Muir Ratts" the Hub Metherton Muir Tringle was the spot People who didn't grow up there could never imagine. 🤣
The leading musical light of his generation and faithful keeper of the flame..
Billy is so great
You deserve to be happy Billy, hope you enjoy the fruits of your labor young. It's hard for our generation right now with how the world is, stay up!
Billy Strings just spoke to my fuckin soul a little bit. Good shit.
As a construction worker, first of all, we get paid pretty good. Second, we listen to a LOT of Billy’s music because it makes it easier to get thru the day. Yes it’s hard work, but we chose this life just like you chose yours so don’t feel too much guilt. Thank you for your music
First time I heard Billy Strings was on CZcams and it was a song called "dust in a baggie" and I was hooked.
Been telling Theo Von for ages to get that Billy Strings on! At last!
I thought I could not admire Billy more than I already do. I was so wrong. What a down to earth dude.
It's crazy that no matter how down to earth you are, fame and success inevitably changes you. At least he comes straight out and says it though "Im playing to survive." He's obviously not the goofy cornball who picks the some of the best bluegrass guitar i have ever heard, you can't stay that cornball when millions and millions come streaming in at once. And you have to take care of your people but I think that's just his ma and dad and maybe a few other guys he started playing with.
I haven't seen him talk or play in 2 or 3 years and I noticed the growth. Love you william. Keep shredding and play for life.
We used to play for silver now we play for life.
billy's a good man, Michigan small town represent.
Damn, I related to this. I am from that place, a little NW of Ionia, but the late 70's and early 80's my time. The auto industry jobs moved out and it is difficult to convey what an economic depression is like on people. Lots of prison towns now. It is a crazy hard existence and a crazy hard reference to live with. Michigan isn't the only place in America so honored to have such a tradition
One day I will meet Billy while on my own journey into making music my life.
Well I'll be darned...I had no idea...3:28...
Billy Strings grew up here in Michigan, near Ionia. That's center/west side of the lower peninsula. Only thing I know about Ionia is it's the closest town to a drag strip nearby in Stanton. The ex had grandparents who had a freaking nice log cabin right there where he is talking and it's some nice land and a fine place to grow up I'm sure. In a million years I would never have guessed this feller was born and raised in Michigan. I like to say I'm from eastern Kentucky because all my family is from there and been visiting often as possible for the past 55 years...but I actually was born in southwest Detroit and still live just west of the city to this day.
That might change real soon however because just today got a visit from a court officer because some unscrupulous crooked businessmen scammed me on a deal while selling my last house...see when dad died in 2016 up till then it was just him and me. Grew up that way, moved just one block away when married so I could continue to take care of dad after he had a permanently disabling injury on the job. I took care of him for 25 years till his old body couldn't take it anymore. Then here I was with 2 houses while paying $2340 per month in child support while working as a mechanic. And yes they can and will do that to you here in Michigan, all states are different. I couldn't keep both houses, decided to move back to the house i grew up in which is where I'm at now. In 2022 was about to lose my house of 22 years when I got a cold call from a smooth talking dude who done his research and found me a block away and wanted to offer to sell the other house on the low end of its value and still get some equity back out of the property instead of letting the bank foreclose. He laid down a deal and facilitated the whole thing and the numbers I thought were fair and ok so I said yes and pulled the trigger. Sat down 25 min with title company and signed papers and got paid by noon that day. 2 weeks later same guy calls and said I'm sorry but we "over-paid" you by a significant amount. Somebody messed up the numbers and basically you owe us $45k. I said I don't know what you been smoking but YOU made a deal of which I agreed and then you paid me! I don't owe you squat!. This went on for weeks, then months. Beginning of the next year I get sued by the title company I believe, but it was actually the "entity" who bought the home, which looking back and thinking all along after problems came up I thought Black Rock...still don't know to this day but pretty sure that's whos behind this. Anyway almost a year went by, they got a court order some time after the first hearing which I wasn't notified of the place and time so I missed it, and they took $6500 from my checking account as well as a $4000 check from them to me as some kind of formality, they ended up getting the bank to stop pay on that too, so right away they recouped $10,500+. After that almost a year went by and all had been quiet. Then dec of 2023 a court officer shows up at the door and long story short he took 2 of my personal vehicles as assets seized. I lost my 1950 Ford classic car which was a running driving needs resto but complete and clean running original flathead V8 shoebox Ford. He also took my only vehicle I ever bought new, a 2002 Chevrolet 2500HD diesel Duramax powered black on black crew cab short bed pickup. It was my baby and as a car guy and mechanic I had done TONS of work on the truck and kept it polished and clean. Lots of mods and money involved, thought it would be my forever truck, last one I'd ever need or buy till end of life. Nope. They took it and the old Ford. I tried to hire an attorney but the one I talked to gave me 2k of free advice and said he couldn't win the case for me. Those crooks had it locked down and made it look like I was the one doing wrong and trying to commit fraud. I can promise anybody and everybody I am NOT a criminal and I do NOT steal, let alone fraud or anything else like that. Attorney said the way this is set up they made it look like it was my fault and no judge was gonna turn the case over in my favor. My biggest error ever was taking their words as truth and trusting them without having my own attorney present when I closed on selling the other house. I was told in fine print an attorney would have caught their scam and tell me No don't Do It! But I was dumb and took them at their word. They sued me for the amount left on the mortgage instead of paying it off which is normally what happens when you sell a house. We had a deal I signed the papers and I got paid. I thought that was it, deal is done. How can you even say No we overpaid you, then not close the mortgage then sue me for that amount??? Well they did and they won because I missed the hearing because I wasnt given the correct date and time. (even more crooked ass sh*t).
They put a lien deceased dads house, the one I grew up in and the one I've been living in since 2019 when I had to go on disability for major health reasons and no longer able to work as a mechanic or anything else I used to know how to do.
So with all said so far let's jump right into what happened today, wed April 24, 2024...
I seen the court officer pull up and come to the door, recognized him from previous when he took my vehicles. I knew I had to answer, and pretty much he was there to serve papers. As he was telling me they are here to serve papers and the house and property will be seized shortly unless the financial amount of something like $131k is met, which is roughly the amount they had invested in my other house sold, but then put a lien on this house, dads old house for that entire amount, not even just for the 45k they said they "overpaid" me in the first place!
So I got really screwed on the sale of my first house and now about to lose the second house which is where I grew up and what I inherited from dad as an only child and dad was single for over 40 years. Because I do live here and I'm a Jr they come to conclusion it is my house now and they plan to seize it all and all my stuff inside and out unless I pay some outrageous amount that I never should have owed in the first place.
Don't know how I got this far telling this story today considering I passed out for a moment and fell when the court officer served me the papers and told me what it was all about. I purposely told this story out loud here today first to make people aware how evil and crooked people can be. Also did this so I can get it all thru my head what happened and where we are at and how it got here and hopefully I can find a solution real fast and put this nightmare behind.
Thank each and every one of you for listening and reading this far if you did make it this far. Pray for the wife and me to keep the house and put an end to this madness, otherwise I'm pretty sure I'm not gonna make it...don't think I can live much longer or survive such a devastating blow losing ones home while on disability, it's all just too much to survive.
As a old mam it's good to see a good kid making it.
Billy’s head is in the right place with his compassion for the poor. he is helping to finance some low-income housing in Grand Rapids. Much respect Mr. Strings.
Mad respect
Billy is a beautiful human being!
Billy is so humble, but don’t let it fool you. The dude is probably the best bluegrass guitarist of my generation… He’s a monster with a dred!!!
It's great seeing Billy doing well. I've been following him from pretty much the beginning (as close to as you can in the UK).
I have 1 question! How is the world's greatest backing dancer doing? Did he ever get his smoke lit?
Respect!
