Agreed.....Prince showed his versatility with his original..for me, a Fleetwood Mac pastiche, complete with a guitar solo at the end, which was also a trademark of Lindsey Buckingham's.

Well, this is the first version that I heard, being younger - then heard the Prince version at a later time, I originally thought this is a Jordan Knight original, then I saw MTV rewind and saw the original version, it's my first time to hear the original and I'm like - oh it's a rock song! but being that I heard this version first I prefer this one, that and I am also more into ballads.both are good, btw.
You should hear Prince's original ballad version as he did both a rock and ballad version. His ballad is off the hook.

I think that because he recorded it before Prince got ownership of his masters, he didn’t need permission.
I think Prince must have liked it though because he started performing it on tour again and slowed it down like this version.
