It was around 12:00 noon in February of 2021.
During the second meal of the day, Momotaro (male) tried to intercept the grass that Genki (female) was eating.
When Genki refused and yelled at him, He got upset.
Momotaro got angry and attacked Genki, but She was not intimidated and fought back.
Gentaro (the eldest son) slaps Momotaro's butt to stop him, and the situation somehow settles down.
Momotaro is usually quiet.
but when he's hungry, he becomes aggressive, which is a problem.
This is a video channel for observing a family of gorillas at Kyoto City Zoo.

My heart breaks for poor Genki!
Genki is not an aggressive gorilla like some people have commented. She is very afraid of Momo but I'm glad that she didn't back down this time. Momo attacks any of them for food. I wish they would separate them when they get fed. She has taking too much abuse from Momo and so has Gentaro. My heart breaks when ever I see Momo attack her.

I teared up also when I saw her arm shook in fear. She was distressed. No wonder there is little display of affection between them.
And they want her to have another baby when she couldn't take care of the two she has had. Im glad they fixed her teeth. If they want her to give birth at her age a health they need to start feeding her food to get her as healthy as possible

I've seen her shaking that hand while she and the boys are chasing Momotaro for hitting or biting someone. She has her moments. Mo was really going after Gent and she was screaming running at him holding Kent shaking g that hand at him. He stopped pounding on Gent and sauntered off. I wouldn't count her out. She knows she has those boys.

Genki gets terrified when Momo directs his anger towards her or when it catches her off guard.

I hate when Genki gets treated bad! She is so brave! She was so scared that she was shaking and it looks like she shit herself too! After all the trauma she has been thru her anxiety gets so bad sometimes.I hope she doesnt start hurting herself again.

Do you all know how to properly take care of Gorilla's? I have watched Momotaro bully Genki and you all speak like it is a loving couple relationship. I notice that she is often tense and on watch and when Momotaro is near she finds a way of moving away within seconds even when it is not feeding time. You know she was bullied at the other zoo by the females, so this is not a good paring because Momatoro tries to bully her for food and will take food out of her hand. On one video he even injured her slightly. You need to feed him separately and again I ask if he is getting enough food? He acts like he is starving when the food is put out he runs to it often. I don't see other Gorillas behaving like that even when they are in a larger grouping. He won't even share with Gentaro when he was given a ice block. Both times he attacked Genki she pooped herself. Even if she stands her ground she cannot win in a physical fight. I think this is a bad paring. Their enclosure needs more live vegetation and grass. Lowland Gorilla's environment is very lush and dense vegetation. Genki keeps picking at her right arm and I have seen both her children doing the same, perhaps she has a skin issue like eczema. In comparison to other Gorillas in zoos, the Momotaro family's skin looks bad.

I agree with everything you said and their enclosure looks like someone through a bomb of debris in there.
Watching this family most days, I have felt exactly the same things that you have commented on here. Genki always know to keep out of his way & keep Kintaro away if she feels Momotaro is 'on the warpath'.The enclosure (compared to other zoos) is quite pitiful with lack of grass/lushness & size for this family of 4. Because of the dirt floor (instead of grass) the fur has worn off their fingers compared to Gorillas the wild & in other zoos. Genki is such a patient, loving mother with Kintaro (moreso than Gentaro), sad to hear that she was bullied in a past zoo as well. Momotaro is often short tempered (& probably bored) - not what Genki needs at all as she seems to be of a nervous nature - which is understandable. This zoo often says 'her beloved husband' but that's not how it is at all. Sadly she's stuck with him!

Poor Genki, Momotaro shouldn't take her food. She stood up to him, even followed him. She needs love from her family not aggression from them. Even though she eats a lot doesn't mean that they take the food. I agree that more nutritional food needs to be provided for the whole family and Momotaro feed separately. I pray peace for this beautiful family.
I agree. I watch videos of gorillas in other zoos and they are crunching on lettuce and other green food.

I already wrote 'my' zoo has boxes. The people can give money to buy tasty food, and they accept food too. The look of course if it is okay an insane animal hater did something with it. But this works well!
I think Kyoto Zoo should give it a try. Imagine they receive salads, celery, fresh corn on the cob, apples... I would feel better ☺

I agree. I've said on several occasions that Genki is always bullied by Gentaro too. It is due to the stingy zoo who has them cooped up in this barren landscape with hardly no stimulants and hammocks that are tearing that poor Kinny can hang himself on. Shabani was bored and picked on the girls particularly Nene until he was moved to his new enclosure. All of his aggressive yet playful nature virtually ceased. He and his family has a lushious and spacious place to roam and plenty to do that keeps them active and stimulated. Their daily diet has a variety of vegetables. This zoo ought to be ashamed of themselves for the poor way they have brought these majestic creatures to this environment and not provide for them that is beneficial to them being able to thrive.
I've seen Genki injured his hand before, now I understand that Momotaro hit her 🥺. The only disadvantage of Momotaro is that food is very important to him, and every time the trigger point is because of food problems 😞.

Why doesn't the Kyoto Zoo feed the gorillas more food especially for Momotaro? He's bigger than everyone else. In the wild they can eat anytime. Why are they being treated like humans only eating 3X a day?
Why can't Gentaro have a female companion? He's very close to an adult age. Momotaro was only 14 years of age when Gentaro was born. Isn't Gentaro 11 years of age now?
I feel they need a bigger place like in some other zoos. Or have them share a space to make it bigger place for them to roam around in.

Sweet genki like wth..lil kintaro right by momma...the beginning was great everyone seemed mellow kintaro n momo interact more love this fam..couldve been worse momo was pretty gentle despite what hecouldve done..this is their world n momo loves his food..
Kudos to Genki for fighting back. Still, I'm glad no one was hurt. Momotaro is large and could severely injure his family. The keepers know of his food aggression issues, and do their best, by usually feeding him separately.

Not enough. In the wild he would eat to his content and if he is fed separately but not given enough he still will have food aggression.

Been watching Momotaro family for months but, seeing them in such a small enclosure compared to the Shabani family as well as others is ridiculous.
Even Shabani’s enclosure is bad. All that cement and steel but comparing it to this enclosure? It’s completely night & day.
Perhaps the lack of ground area is compensated for by the great height. The total useable volume of their enclosure is great. They get plenty of exercise, that's for sure! The vertical exercise they all get is great for their cardiovascular, pulmonary, & musculoskeletal systems.

Their enclosure looks like someone bombed it with a bunch of debris. I don't see them eating vegetation like I see gorillas at other zoos eating. Momotaro needs more food. Don't know if it is imagination, but Momo's chest looks like he is loosing body mass.

それでは足りずにゲンキさんのを奪いに行ったのかも知れません😅

I think they need to feed them more than just leaves. The zoo can afford it.
What do you think they eat in the wild? Leaves, grass, bark, shoots & roots--all day, every day. Sometimes wild vegetables, berries, nuts, insects & grubs.
But guess what! They get fed morning & evening meals indoors which we don't get to see. That includes vegetables. In the morning when they come outdoors, they will forage for pieces of apples & carrots, whole bell peppers, other veggies, & peanuts.
They do not have the same metabolism as humans. They have different dietary needs. The zoo knows what it is doing.

I have noticed for a couple months the tension within this little family over "Not enough food" What is going on there? Also Genki has a cyst on her face. You guys used to be one of the best Gorilla Zoo's around. Drama doesn't make better content. I don't see much vegtables given to them anymore either. I am very worried about y'all. 💖💖💖
The abcess on Genki's face is almost gone as of this writing. The vets & staff have been on top of it all along.
They get fed morning & evening meals indoors & we do not get to see that.

ゲンタロウがモモタロウのお尻を叩いた瞬間、モモタロウが『ハッ、おれはとんでもないことしてるんじゃないか？』
と血の気が引いていく様が見てとれますよね。
いつもゲンキさんにチョッカイをかけるゲンタロウが、今回ファインプレーをしたという事がホント嬉しかったです😊
キンタロウもゲンキさんを制止しようとしてるんですけど、効果は無かったみたいです😅
It's amazing how different their digestive systems must be from our own. They can build tremendous amounts of muscle while eating things we can't even digest.
It is more than just digestion.
Actually they don't fully digest all that they eat. They sometimes eat their poop to get a second round of digestion & extract more nitrients.
For humans there are about 20 essential amino acids which we cannot synthesize, so we need those in our diet. I guess gorillas can synthesize all the amino acids they need from their plant food.
@@bythebayou5351 Yeah they really need the plant fiber to feed the healthy bacteria in their guts. Male gorillas in North American zoos have super high rates of heart disease thanks to being fed "gorilla biscuits" in place of tens of pounds of leafy plant material per day. The biscuits are cheaper and easier since they're more nutrient dense but gorillas need to keep their gut bacteria well fed in order to have healthy hearts. Heart disease is practically unheard of in the wild where they forage for greens all day but it's the primary killer of silver backs in America. This zoo seems to be doing a really good job with their diets and making them "forage"
@@stephenbrand5661 I knew about the high rates of heart disease, unexplained deaths (usually due to cardiovascular events), & early deaths among male gorillas in the U S, but I didn't know it is all due to lack of fiber in their diets. Makes me want to increase my fiber intake!

Fun fact: Gorillas are the only apes that can digest cellulose, the material leaves are made from. In other apes, it goes undigested from one end to the other.

He visto en otros zoo que le dan muchas frutas, mazorcas, yogurt a las familias de gorilas silver back que están en extinción. Momotaro es un ejemplar hermoso y musculoso, por lo que su contextura física demanda mucha más comida vegetal. Very volatile and unpredictable at times.....but they are animals at the end of the day
Silverbacks of the troop always eat first just like in the wild they take more than their fair share, even the handsome Shabani takes food from the other’s when he feels like it , you have to remember the stress of being the Silverback of the troop it’s hard graft as they have to keep everything under control and keep the family safe it’s all on his shoulders and Shabani has done more than his fair share of raising the kid’s and keeping Annie safe from Nene and AI as AI wasn’t interested in looking after Annie when they were introducing her into the family.
Shabani almost never takes food from them . Au contrary he lets the kids take food from his hands.

Ну, во-первых, она не женщина, а самка гориллы, во-вторых, сыночек уже пытался залезть на мамашку, об этом в других видео. Младший просто ещё не дорос до возраста половой зрелости, его интересует только титька. Кстати, я заметила, что эта самка не в большом почете у самца, тут одно из двух: либо она родила от другого самца, либо просто самец её "не любит", все, как у людей.

I’m truly surprised Momotaro attacked like this. He’s usually very protective over genki. He is the alpha male though. Even though we know Genki is the charge of the troop lol

Your heart is definitely in the right place but I rather donate to get them out of that terrible enclosure, otherwise all we’ll be doing is enabling this zoo to continue their neglect. These gorgeous creatures deserve nothing but the best . If the zoo can’t afford to provide for this troop, then im pretty sure another zoo, sanctuary(etc) will. For way too long this zoo and many more in Japan had the time and money to correct this issue and today in 2021 it seems like nothing has been done. I would expect this in China or North Korea, not Japan.

Kintaro has told up for his brother numerous times in the last two years I've been watching. He has even interceded when Momotaro was angry for him abusing Kintaro. Kintaro is the only one that did not lose his bowels in fear of his fathers wrath. Gentaro provokes his father and the shreaks and runs away later seeking sympathy for his being chastised. He whines to the keepers and his mother for behavior he brought onto himself.

@@stevemorris6790 I have come to love Gentaro. I didntike the way he treated his brother but obviously they adore each other and am concerned poorittle Kentaro is going to miss him. Ive gone back and watched him a a youngster and he was absolutely adorable with his little jumps. I hate the way Momotaro treats him but I guess in their small enclosure there is no room for 2 Silverback. I dont like the way he takes his aggression out on Genki but he certainly can't do it to his father and hisittle brother is his only constant source of love and affection. I know it has to happen but its going to be sad when he leaves for his new life. If he indeed is put with Annie he will be thrilled but poor little Kentaro is going to be so very sad.

I didnt like the way he drug the baby around d slamming his head on logs and rocks but hate is an emotion I save for extreme humans like serial killers or mass murderers and then Im not sure I hate them. As far as defending his mother he beats her up with more regularity. That I understand because he can't take his aggression out on his father and he feels Kentaro has taken his place. Guess what? He did. I was thrill when Gentaro stopped raping him. Ever notice how he only away penetrated when his parents weren't watching? I was very happy when play time wasn't sex time and he actually started enjoying the love and hero worship Kentaro was so eager to give him. Now they have a special bond because Kentaro loves his brother and gives him the attention he No longer or rarely gets from his parents. I am genuinely disturbed when Momotaro is so mean to him for no reason. Now he wants Kentaro. I think Gentaro has matured and I admire how he has turned things around. He will be a good Silverback if he gets to hookup with Annie. The only sad part is poor Kentaro will become the long gorilla and he knows what it feels Ike to have a companion so its even worse for him.
The one who grieves me is Genki. I hope they keep her on that diet so she can move around and get some exercise. I really am still quite angry about the day she took his favorite little toy with food taking everything and then biting him. They called it a tantrum. He was being spoiled he was trying to get something to eat. Genki needs to lose weight so she can have one more baby so Kentaro will be a big brother and hopefully not slam the new baby's head into rocks and logs. Gorillas must have some hard heads.
The boys always take up for their mother. Ive seen Momotaro take after Gentaro. Genki should have stayed out of it. Now Gentaro abuses her and Momotaro could care less. He does get too rough. It was pretty amazing when Gentaro had been cocky and started off. His father batted him around like a ball and Kentaro watching. I just think Kentaro has a different personify because he got beat up daily by his brother dropped from heights he was curious about him but more he was jealous because all of the sudden there was that thing mom carried all the time and didn't have time to clean my genitals even when I stuck them in her face. Watching them is a trip and a learning experience if you are so inclined. I had an older brother and uncle who picked on me so I might be sympathetic. I was the little guy but I didn't poop my pants either.

they are fed inside in the morning, they eat pretty well. I think when they are outside its more territorial.

Most zoo's, except Japan apparently, feed the silverback first. They have no issues like this and everyone is happy. It's not hard, just let him out for 10 minutes before everyone else. The silverback has the instinct to be the first, that is how it is in the wild. The silverback gets first pick of everything. Just because momo is in a zoo, doesn't mean that his instincts aren't going to drive him to do what comes naturally. Besides that, we don't know exactly what happened. In another video from this time , genki took momo's pile of grass as soon as momo turned his back she was on it. Her addiction to food is far worse than his.

I believe they feed them a lot of grass because their teeth aren't looking do great. The grass acts as a natural kind of floss. If they're fed too many fruits there can be too much sugar in their diet that can rot their teeth quicker.
I would like to watch them eat more veggies though.
@@vescucci I agree gorillas love celery it’s what they eat in the wild they love carrots so many other gorillas are given celery carrots tomatoes and all kinds of greens I know Jackie loves mustard greens they should get some local farms supporting them.I know it would make me happy as well as everyone else who watches this channel. And some fruits fruits in the morning so the teeth get cleaned with the greens and all the chlorophyll I think would be perfectly fine though I’m not a gorilla expert. I do know that greens I do know the greens are good for peoples teeth

They are feeding them Italian Rye Grass 24/7 during the Winter months and it is not very nutritious. It's meant more for ruminants like cows and not conducive for gorillas. It bloats their stomachs which is why their stomachs are distended with gas...giving the false perception that they are well fed. You don't see other zoo's feeding their gorilla families this grass 24/7. Genki is also still nursing Kintaro and he is the 2nd of her offspring that required supplemental feeding. If she's not producing enough milk which is evident by her flat breasts, then it means the food she receives is not nutritious enough for her to lactate properly and produce enough milk. I've complained many times about the food issues at this zoo in the comments section of previous videos. I even wrote to PETA about their condition, dull coats, calluses on their rumps, etc. Their environment is not natural~!! When have you seen cement and metal grown in the jungle? They sit and lay on these hard surfaces daily. When they were allowing visitors to film the inside of their enclosure, it was disgusting and filthy with the gorillas eating grass and food that was saturated in urine and feces. They are not provided with enough nesting material/hay to even make a clean, comfortable bed. Lying on cement and steel has to take a toll on their bones the way standing on cement causes great stress to humans musculoskeletal systems. People say they're treated so nice by the staff... being treated nice because it looks good to the public and receiving proper nutrition and having more palatable food that is beneficial to their well being needs to be addressed NOW~!! No more sitting back waiting until something happens is not acceptable. We love these gorillas and this family and if we care we will do something about it. Actions speak louder than words and if we or most of us contacted this zoo and the zoological agency that overseas zoo's then hopefully something will get done. Why take these beautiful primates from their lush jungle homes only to treat them less than? They do not deserve that. Genki had a miscarriage while at a DIFFERENT zoo.
She was paired with 3 other males before Momotaro & did not become pregnant despite mating many times.
Gentaro was conceived about 6 months after being with Momotaro. Yay, good news!
Yes, she did have lactation problems with both sons.
There was a very long interval between the 2 sons, 7 years, where Genki did not get pregnant (normal in the wild is 4 years).
So Genki might have a hormonal disorder which is not nutritionally based.
The differential diagnosis of infertility & lactation problems in gorillas is probably just as long & varied as it is in humans.
Not every problem is caused by nor can be solved by food.
PETA is anything but animal protection. They legit kidnapped a dog and killed them.
A better gorilla protection organization is the Aspinall Foundation. Nowadays they're rehabilitating former zoo gorillas to either protected natural parks and sanctuaries.

@@johnh.mcsaxx3637 I'm not one to criticize zoo's in general. But I am criticizing this zoo from what I have seen with my own eyes via videos shown of the inside enclosures. The same way animals are put in zoo's, then their has to be advocates for these animals if their not being fed/treated properly, which includes vet care, enough open space for them to thrive and comfortably live. What's the sense in taking them out of their natural environment if they're not living as close to their normal way of life as possible. The Momotaro family just recently went through a life threatening circumstance. Fortunately they seem to have received great veterinary care that helped them survive.

Fighting over grass means that they are NOT being provided with enough food. In the wild they are able to move a great distance looking fir food. Here they cant, they sulk and fight.

The Haoko I've seen has been a good husband and father...he and Shabani were brought up with sisters and,they both were caring towards them.
Last year when his daughter was born he held and stroked Momokos hand tenderly.
When Momoko had her illness and was in hospice Haoko was depressed calling for her...that man loves his wife.
Shabani loves his whole family as well.
Shabani is by far the best father,brother,husband, and the best looking of the bunch.
