It's incredible that even with all of our technology and advancements, there are still places in the world that we can't explain. Which of these unexplained places do you think is the most perplexing

I beg to differ. The most frightening part of the Marianas Trench is the fact that human pollution is found even at those depths.

I lived in Nara, Japan for 12 years. It's so rich with Japanese history and culture that a period of Japanese history is named after it. The area is breathtaking, with traditional architecture, terraced rice farms, castle ruins, and massive ancient tombs known as kofun. Queen Himiko (of Tomb Raider fame) is thought to be buried in the Hashihaka kofun near the town of Sakurai at the base of Mt Miwa. Any place with that much history is bound to be rich in mysteries. The town of Asuka is about an hour south of Nara City and itself has it's own period in Japanese history. I was in a hiking group that went along ancient Japanese roads and about 2/3 of the treks we made were around that area. There are the ruins of a mountain castle (Takatori-jo) reclaimed by the forest with trees growing right out of the stone walls. There are the old sites of shrines, temples, tombs, villages, and even a palace out there. The area is also loaded with ancient stone carvings that have worked their way into local folklore, but nobody actually knows what they were for, coming up with names like 'the stone ship' or 'the tortoise'. Most of the group members were locals and we even had a few members who were historians, explaining where we going, what happened there, and what we were looking at. They said the local theories ranged from spirits to even aliens, but were most likely parts of larger wooden ceremonial structures that were lost to time, making it impossible to ever know exactly what they were for. I really loved the local folklore though because it really get the imagination going.

The boulders are petrified seed/fruit from ancient giant trees before the flood. The nearby "mountain" is the tree stump.
