I am Kokanasth-Brahmin. My Grand-Father were forced to leave the village.
I heard from my parents that my Grand-Father left Sangmeshwar Village (Dist-Ratnagiri, Maharashtra) forever. He had to leave the house behind and carried only one set of cloths. I visited Sangmeshwar at the age of 20 ( Year 1993). Till that time i.e. 1948 till 1993, no one from our family visited our village. In 1993 (My first visit to village), I met Shri Bapu Joshi, who showed me our house. Few year later, I took my parents along with me and visited our house. Folks who are living in that house were scared, when we were introduced to them as owners of the house. By the God's grace, we are well settled and not going to file any claim on our old house. !!!!

Many thanks for an episode in past, not known to almost all Indians. I was a toddler clapping looking at a fire set by a mob ( anti Brahmins in and around Kolhapur that was en epicentre of Anti Brahmanism) in a village Sheloli where I was born in the house of my maternal uncle. All along my childhood, my uncles were jokingly saying: " Jenva mamache ghar jalat hote tenva ha talya wajvat hota" ( When our house was on fire, this fellow was clapping). A harijan fellow, who was close to my late father, named Hari Mahar used to tell me how he had protected my maternal uncle hiding in sugarcane fields, when miscreants were looking for him. These are my remanences from childhood those came to my mind after watching our episode! Please keep it up.
This is the main reason, why Maharashtrian Bramhins generally keep away from politics.... Rather they send their children abroad for higher education and good jobs

But, different people perceive it in their own perspective.The account of a true witness is worth believing. It's difficult to invest time to refer multiple writers for a particular event. Personal secretary of Gandhi is the eyewitness who knows how Hindus were being scolded by Gandhi and how he was so apt to Muslims. All such actions of Gandhi was intolerable to Godse. Had Gandhi not been killed may be Hindus would have been sujecyed to more ordeals. So, on killing of Gandhi saved many from torture. As Godse fired Gandhi, people killed many Brahmins as Godse was Brahmin. This is the theme of this video.

I listend the stories from my mother, grandmother and grandfather.
1) Before marriage my grandmother was living in shippur(near to kolhapur), she told that there were only 1-2 brahmin families in that village. After the gandhi's death, mob came to burn the house ,and asked the grandfather of my grandmother to vecant the house and farm and leave the village otherwise will burn all these things with you. So her grandfather escaped the cows/bulls from house and left the village with his family. After some years, there were no brahmin in that village , so the village was suffering the problems of rituals and they believed that without brahmin, marriages without proper rituals (married life) is not going well. So again some senior people came to home and asked to come to village again. But grandfather denied.
From that time my grandmother has hatred for congress.
2) My grandfather told that, after death of Gandhi , some people came in our area(Karad from satara distict) to burn our houses. But my area, brahmin families are more and river is also very close from my house, so my great grandfather gathered the people and decided to attack on the people if they attacked on them and will cross the river. But fortunately in my area, there was one most respectful congress leader who was a brahmin and due to his words, people didnt attacked on our houses.
Grandfather also told that, after that incident, people only tried to attack on RSS workers. In my house(wada) there was one teacher who was living on a rent and he was an active worker of RSS. So people come to do an attack on him in my house, but fortunately the leader of those people and the teacher both were classmates so their leader asked other people to go and that teacher was safe. There were more and more stories which were more horrible. I also listened one more story from my friend that after Gandhi's death, the three brahmin brothers had stab to death by mob. These incidents are very famous in western maharashtra. But out of maharashtra these things are not much known to people.

3) My grandfather's(mother's father) 3 floor house was burned by these people.Ground floor was kept untouched because they had a common wall with non-brahmin neighbour.
Also i am noticing that there is a misconception that, non Maharashtrian people are thinking that only koknastha(chitpavan) i.e the sect from which Nathuram godse was coming had faced these atrocities. This is totally false information.Every sect of brahmin in maharashtra had faced these things. They only saw "Brahmin" thats it.
After that they came up with one law( kul kayda) i.e. kasel tyachi jamin......means if people had labours in farms then the government considered the labour as an owner of that land. By this loop hole, they took lands/farms of almost all brahmin families. So after that, brahmins left villages slowly and moved to cities. My grandfather told that one of the congress minister in his meeting ,he said that "this is the opportuninty to take lands from brahmins, this is the law and pass this information to your relatives and capture the lands" . 1-2 brahmin people were there in that meeting and after listening this, they moved out of that meeting .So people got to know about it.I think these are literally pre planned things, to vanish the brahmin identity from maharashtra. In the freedom movement, 80-90% freedom fighters were brahmins and after independance brahmins received this reward from society. Now a days in a village you rarely saw a brahmin families. Now majority brahmins are living in a group in cities.
I was knowing nothing about this genocide of Brahmins... So sad..

Thanks for making this topic public. We are one of the families who were victimised. Our ancestor properties were either destroyed or the Brahmins killed. Those who fled were never allowed to return to claim their own homes. The properties were stolen by the forward communities like Marathas. The hatred spread was so intense that lasts even now. Politicians likes of Pawars still make political propaganda of murderer and pin the blame on descendants of Brahmins. I had tried to institute a research scholarship for studying impact of violence of those days. But no institute accepted my proposal such is a fear still lurking in the minds of those who run educational institutes. Most of the first time generation of those suffered migrated to foreign countries. Those who couldn’t continued to suffer till date.

I am Rajendra P. Patwardhan dob 3/4/1951, initially born and brought up in Pune where my parents had relocated from Tasgaon our forefathers' princely state, after Gandhiji's assassination in Jan. 1948. Because, as you must have guessed, we are Brahmins and within them Chitpavans. To retrace my roots, I have settled in our ancestral place of Tasgaon, with my family, since 1980. I have followed whatever leads I could with regard to the arson and loot of Brahmins post Jan. 1948. One relates to Tasgaon our place. The fact that only two residences were burnt in Tasgaon can be attributed to a freak occurence - S. G. Barve, an ICS officer, who was the Commissioner of Pune city that time, was originally from Tasgaon. A chitpavan Brahmin himself, naturally he was concerned about the fate of his family 30/1/1948 onwards. On some pretext, he talked Morarji Desai, who was then the Home Minister of Bombay stste, into accompany him ( S. G. Barve ) to Tasgaon. On reaching there, they were informed that two Brahmin houses had been gutted by rampaging mobs. Then Barve had Morarji declare a strict curfew in Tasgaon with a full state police force deplloyment ; thus preventing further arson and surely contributing to saving our 200-year-old Rajwada, our current residence. Back in Pune, Barve and Morarji put Pune under Martial Law with the Army's help and saved the majority of Pune Brahmins from the mayhem. The duo of Barve and Morarji D. were never given any credit for this unsung noble work - nothing else could be expected .

Thanks for talking about this painful saga. We had heard about it in childhood but there was no official mention of it anywhere. It is extremely unfortunate as it is but the reason behind this was that many non-Brahmin Congress leaders saw a political opening here. So, one has to question if this is the legacy of Gandhiji? Were his teaching of non-violence so feeble? When Gandhiji was alive, he caused enormous damage to the Hindus. But in his death , he caused a genocide of Marathi Hindu Brahmins . The damage did not end there. His assassination altered Indian politics forever, it poisoned the country and we are facing those ill effects even today.
